You may have heard about the overheating issues associated with L.A. Noire .

At first, it seemed to only be happening to older PlayStation 3 models (original 60GB and 80GB machines) and furthermore, due to Rockstar's wording in an update, it sounded like recent firmware update 3.61 might be the culprit. But since that time, we've learned both PS3 and Xbox 360 owners have experienced some crashing issues, and Sony has confirmed such problems have nothing to do with the PS3. Nick Caplin, head of communications at SCEE recently clarified :

"There is not an over heating problem with PS3. Occasionally a PS3 over heats for numerous reasons and we’re not seeing an increased number of reports at the moment."

After which he added:

"The point is that there is no problem. With so many PS3s in the market, the odd one is bound to over heat and for some reason this has been made to sound like an particular issue. We have not seen an increase from the normal level of calls that are received by our call centres on a daily basis."

For the record, after more than a few 3 and 4-hour sessions, we've never had the game crash, although it is clear that it demands a great deal from the system. The fan kicks in a little faster than with other titles, it seems. That being said, this sounds like a rare problem and one you probably won't encounter, especially if you have a newer PS3 or 360.

That doesn't mean people aren't experiencing problems or even that LA Noire isn't the trigger, just that they are fabricating the idea of a "bug" directly related to the newest change (e.g., a new firmware or a specific game) when the problems are more likely routine bad luck which happened coincidentally just after the change.

Uncharted 2 caused my first YLOD, not because the game is flawed, but because it demanded a lot from my PS3 and exposed some weakness in the "health" of the hardware. The failure could have occurred at any time, but it was more likely during U2 because it pushes the hardware more than Go Sudoku.

Yes, but that doesn't make it the fault of the console or the game, it's simply wear and tear…

That's pretty crazy when a 'game' can cause a system to overheat

Well for one, if a game deamnds a lot of the console (esp the older models which handle heat less well compared to the newer consoles) its logical that it could cause problems.
My computer, when i run a lot of videos and tabs and prorammes etc etc the fan gets very loud as im damnding more of my computer.

and two, LA Noire technically still is a game. not a 'game'.

So what the disc spins so hard the system gets overheated? I say get a fan for the ps3 and more ventilation for the system, if the above don't work than it's time to upgrade

Downvotes are meaningless when there's only a couple. Some people downvote OT posts in general.

Eventually, if you're lucky enough, you'll even amass a downvote stalker or two like me! You know you've made a lasting impression on people when they downvote just by seeing your name! 🙂 That's how you know you have revolutionary thoughts on gaming!

How is it crazy? Do you have any knowledge on anything other than fake wrestling? Games cause hardware to overheat on a regular bases, that's what patches are for.

It would only seem that way to people incapable of realizing I couldn't nor wouldn't ever make a comment like that seriously. I'm only too aware of my flaws! Married life tends to give you that perspective! *yuk yuk*

Apparently there are 7 at this point incapable of proud humor. lol (Rather 5 minus the two stalkers! HA!)

But perhaps it is as Beamboom (I believe) said in another thread… people seem designed to find only the negative… *exasperated sigh*

Also, I couldn't help but notice the humor (or irony, perhaps) in a statement of your own a little further down after I commented:

LV said, "Get a sense of humor man, it was funny. "

i don't know what to make of this. hundreds of people call r* and complain that they are having problems with their consoles overheating playing la noire then a r* service rep blaims it on update 3.61. sony then says nope not us, and says la noire is overheating other consoles(meaning the 360).

hundreds is a relativly small number, but apparently something is going on out there.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

Nothing is goIng on and Sony isnt saying it's LA noire And R* isnt saying it's te system. Go to the PS Blog there is a joint article from Sony and R* saying neither of these (the game and the update) have anything to do with the issue. It goes on to give links to both Sony and R* if you have questions.

It's neither the game, nor the firmware, nor any other conspiracy theory. Let's just stop with having to pin blame on someone or something every time the stars align and we notice shall we? Good god, did we learn nothing from the last 2000 years?

Simple facts are;

older console tend to overheat when pushed hard
Some consoles pass all the tests when made, but still harbor a latent fault that emerges at some time in the future.

It's called imperfection, and it happens, an it's no one's fault. The only thing going on out there is that someone's console decided that it's time had come after a particularly long session of LA Noir and now it' got to be someone's fault. People love to assign blame, and the anonymous complaint box called the Internet magnifies that by a million or so times.

Maybe it just has to do with the fact that old fatty ps3's are getting old and some of them are starting to overheat because for the last 3-4 years their owners haven't take very good care of them.

Perhaps this mixed with a game requiring a lot of the system is all it took for the old ps3's to finally overheat.

I treat my fatty like a king, but I've seen how some people treat theirs and it's no surprise to me that people are having issues.

Yeah, my fatty is now only used as a blu-ray player in my bedroom. I got a slim to handle all the new games once I got Move in the den. I want to keep my 1st release as long as possible to remind me how long I stood in line just to have one. KING!! 🙂

Has anyone here actually opened/dismantled their PS3 to give everything a good clean? It annoys me to think how much dust must be in there, but I'm a bit scared incase I can't put it back together.

kraygen
kraygen

Actually I've had mine for almost 3 years and was considering doing just that, opening it to clean it out.

However after tons of online research I discovered that most people who open them find little dust deep inside the machine. The majority of any dust found is near the ventilation holes in the side and back of your ps3.

Also found that Sony and several people who had cracked open their ps3's said that it's best to use a low power vacuum all around your ps3 system once in a while in order to keep it dust free. A powerful vacuum if given full suction of the vent could pull free some of the soldering and should be avoided.

Other than that make sure it's in a well ventilated area, keep it cool, and most people will have no problems.

"The majority of any dust found is near the ventilation holes in the side and back of your ps3."

I'll be honest kraygen, I find that hard to believe, but if that's what people are saying then I'll just carry on hoovering the grills. Thanks!

I understand it seems strange, but note I did say the majority, very little does however get into the internal components.

If you do enough digging you can find pictures people have posted of them removing the casing for a cleaning in a step by step process for the first time.

Apparently the internal fans do a good job of keeping most of the dust pushed away from the internal components.

RadioHeader

Yeah, I've just watched a dismantling video on youtube and there's so many separate parts that need to be stripped away that I just lost all confidence. It's good to know that simply hoovering at the grills is thought to be fairly effective, so thanks again.

If it goes unresolved yes it will destroy your PS3. I had a similar situation happen to my 360 back in the fall of 08. Which sucks cause I never got to play Lost Odyssey

Bandit1

Mine has done this since day one. Played it for about 3-4 hours and then my PS3 just shut off. Not really sure that it's an "overheat" problem I left the system off all night and started it up again the next day and it shut off within 5 minutes. Other games work fine. Seems to be a Rockstar thing to me.

bigrailer19

Be careful though. If the PS3 overheats it will shut off as a safety feature.

If a PS3 repeatedly shuts itself down like that, with the flashing red light, it usually means a heat issue has been detected by the CPU's thermal protection and a shutdown was triggered. If that is happening, it's a good idea not to push it further, and get it repaired.

Complainers just tend to be louder, making them seem more prevalent. It's kinda like the <5% of iPhone 4 users saying 'antennagate' affected them, or the <0.0000001% of iPod users w/ 'exploding' batteries, or the ~2-5% of people who say they have a bad reaction to MSG, or the <1% of shoppers who claim a store is horrible because they didn't totally get their way on something (and is easily their own fault half the time), etc.
