When Sony announced the phased restoration of the PlayStation Network, they said we can expect details of the "welcome back" program in due time. That information is now at the PlayStation Blog ; this applies to North American PSN customers, who can take advantage "shortly after" Sony has fully restored the service.

First, all PSN customers can select two PS3 games from the following list; they'll be available for 30 days after the Store has been resurrected:

Those are some great titles right there. For PSP owners, they can download two free games from this list (also for 30 days after the Store is back):

Oh, but it doesn't end there.

— A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.

— 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers.

— Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.

— Existing Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription.

— Additional 30 days + time lost for existing members of Music Unlimited Premium/Basic subscription free of charge for existing Premium/Basic members.

— To welcome users Home, PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.

Okay, so some users might remain bitter. But this isn't a bad program, is it?

Also if you own a PS3 and a PSP you get 2 games from each list. They answered the question on the EU blog.

Cool I was about to bring that up.

This sucks because I literally just bought inFamous to play while the network was down and now they're offering it for free

Nice.

If I didn't already have Infamous I'd be there. Looks like I'll be going after LBP on both platforms and/or ModNation racers on PSP.

I'll be interested in the home stuff too, I'm a bit of a virtual hoarder…

I already have infamous & dead nation too. I always wanted a little big planet game too but I've been on a budget lately so this is great. I'll probably end up downloading that & super stardust since it has local co-op. I only get psn games that have co-op.

Wow!

This is way more than they needed to do. I'm not usually one to take advantage of such generosity but Dead Nation and Pursuit Force look mighty tempting.

I'm happy with inFamous alone. I was gonna pick it up for my birthday on the 18th.

Sony could've very easily just had you pick 1 or 2 games from a lot of 5 PSN titles. The fact that they threw in 2 full retail games is really impressive. Kudos Sony, I wasn't going anywhere because of this cyber attack but you really did go above and beyond with this "Welcome Back" program. Three weeks of down time for the PSN wasn't worth much more than a free month of PS Plus, in my opinion. Thank you Sony/Anoyomous/GeoHotz!!! (that's a joke, people)

I'll most likely get Wipeout HD as I've always wanted to download it, but was always scared off by the $20 price tag. Since I already own inFAMOUS I think the other game I'll download is LBP. Never played it or the sequel, and even though it doesn't look like my "type" of game, I can't ignore all the praise and accolades it received.

Jimmy,

WipeoutHD/Fury is well worth the sticker price, and with this Welcome Back offer….well, I think you'll enjoy it when you get it.

SuperStardust is a great arcade game, kind of Asteroids on the Steroids that the steroids would take if they wanted to be buff….

According to Sony you get to keep the games you choose forever. This article implies you can only have them for 30 days.

Dan0mite,

I haven't gone over to the PS Blog as of yet, but I'm thinking that those 30 days just mean that you'll have 30 days to pick & download them for free once they're up.

And that they'll no longer be available as "free" games, after that 30 day period.

Straight from PS Blog;

All PlayStation Network customers can select two PS3 games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

Dead Nation
inFAMOUS
LittleBigPlanet
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD + Fury

For PSP owners, you will be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
ModNation Racers
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation

Wow, that's a very nice "welcome back" package! Not to mention you get two free games for both your PS3 and PSP, and you'll keep them forever! And those multimedia rentals are pretty good as well, though I cannot avail of them since I am not in the United States.

Those who doesn't have Infamous yet ought to take advantage of this one. It's also pretty clever of Sony to offer it for free, since the second game is just around the corner.

I'm not sure yet as to what I'll be getting, but at the moment I might get Dead Nation and Wipeout HD + Fury for the PS3, and Killzone Liberation and ModNation Racers (or maybe Pursuit Force) for the PSP.

Anyway, I'm glad that the PSN is finally back (just waiting for the Store to be up as well). All these incentives are just cherries on top. Thanks Sony!

I figured they'd offer maybe a regular PSN title and maybe a mini or two which I would have been fine with. I think this is really awesome of them and the developers.

I already have the Platinum on Infamous but I'll still download that and then Dead Nation as I have LBP and Super Stardust HD. Wipeout isn't something I'm interested in.

For the PSP side I'm going for LBP and Modnation Racers. I have Killzone Liberation and I'm not sure what Pursuit Force is but I'll probably still go with my first picks.

inFamous and Super Stardust HD/3D. Actually one of the better looking games in 3D. Either that or Wipeout. Also in 3D. Any suggegstions? Oh and i'll be getting lbp and modnation racers for the PSP. This is very generous of Sony. Can always appreciate when people can own up to their mistakes. This is just awesome.

Holy crap. Man, I'll feel guilty for downloading these things for free. Thanks Sony!
I think I'll go for LBP and Super Stardust HD for PS3.
(I own Infamous already)
LBP wouldn't ordinarily be my thing, but now the "price" is right =p and I'm curious to see what caused this game to net so many GOtY awards.
At the least, my daughters should enjoy watching me play it.

I'll snag KZ Liberation for PSP, and.. haven't decided on the second item.

And once again, Sony, totally not necessary, but I'm happy to oblige.

Sweet deal sony, I still don't think you need to do this, but if your offering, ill accept. It would be rude other wise.

And since I own lbp ( its pretty sick, my gal loves it ) ill prolly go with inFAMOUS since I've never played it but have heard good things. And ill alos be nabbing dead nation. Yes I know its a top-down zombie shooter, but did you notice the 3rd word in that description? Zombie. ZOMBIES for crying out loud.

Can't go wrong with killing hordes of the living dead.

Yea, I know. way back when I was young and dumb I owned an Xbox. And Stubs was on my list but it stopped reading discs before I could get a chance to buy it. Destroy all Humans was similar enough to satisfy me though.

I'll be going for inFAMOUS for sure, seeing as I never got around to it before (tried it though, and it is fun.) I'll also be nabbing LBP, only because it was one of those unlucky games I had to sell a few months back to get some emergency cash. I sure am missing a lot of those games right now…*sigh*

But this is a great deal, especially since the outage really didn't affect me that much.

Doesn't really help me any. The only good free PS3 games that are listed, I already own. Don't have a PSP so those do me no good either. Not really into the free movies since I already have Netflix so I can watch whatever movies they list whenever I feel like it already. Don't use Home so that's pointless as well. And never saw the point of getting the Plus service so that's also wasted on me.

You do realize their is potential to gain a ton of content in that 30 days of plus. Even though if you don't subscribe after the 30 days you lose it all, their is tons of content for free, including games that pay for itself. I don't have plus but I already know I'll subscribe after this free 30 days. Too much good stuff to ignore!

I Was curious about that. A lot of people feel like being a loyal fan and owning them all are getting left out. So I'm curious as to how they will respond to that. The 5 games listed are incredible games and more than worth it, but that's more the reason people would own all them already. So I'm curious to see what happens. I though they would give us not digital money but a free transaction of some sort to purchase something.

Either way I'm getting dead nation and wipeout!

Well, the thing is if you look at the spread of genre, these games cover a very wide range of gamer. None of the games sold in the numbers that something like MW2 or Black Ops sell, so there's a good chance that a lot of gamers, the majority in fact, don't have these games. Certainly few gamers will already have them all.

But, if you do, then now you can get them as downloadable, so they will be on the HDD instead of you having to put the disc in. Not to mention the PSP games and the free 30 days of Plus (60 for Plus subscribers) and finally a yard sale worth of Home items. I'm sure many will already have lots of them, and some won't like all of them.

I guess that the point is that the vast majority of PS3/PSP/PSN customers will find something in all of this for them. Some more than others perhaps, but that was inevitable.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Oh, another point. Everyone get's 30 days of PlayStation Plus membership. During that time you'll get a free edition of Qore, as well as several free games and several heavily discounted games as well as access to any Plus exclusive content during that time. Sony has pledged to update the store several times in the first month coming back online, so there may be many more free games to come via Plus and the Store. People need to remember that 30 days of Plus doesn't just mean 30 days to try cloud storage, there are free and discounted games to consider as well.

bigrailer19

Oh hey I wasn't complainIng. no doubt they've gone far and above what they needed to with this plethora of great content by the way. I don't have all those games so it doesn'tatter what I say I'm downloading the two I want.

I was just curious when we'd start hearing from those that do have all the games. To be honest I think the majority of us PSN users are just happy to be online. That's all we wanted really!

evilmunkie
evilmunkie

Not complaining here either just pointing something out, 2 months ago PSN had us vote for some games that became "fan favorites". The downloadable game that won from the PSN exclusives was Dead Nation picked up that and Castle Crashers, that won something else, that week. All I'm going to say is it wasn't on sale that long ago, but it was worth every penny if you ask me. Dont know how many others are in the same boat or even feel the same way I do. For anyone that hasn't played it Dead Nation is great game. I played alot of it while the PSN was down with custom playlist running, cant go wrong with that, especially not with some cannibal corpse. Hah guess I'll grab Infamous just for insurance if anything ever happens to my physical copy.

I think I'll go with LBP and Dead Nation, but the one problem is that my HDD is too small to fit both games plus what I already have on it. I was already planning to get a new one, but not before about a month or two. Can I just pick them so I can still get them for free, but download them later?

johnld

yeah, just download them one at a time or whatever your hd can fit, then delete them. then go to account settings and pick download history or something like that. redownload them from that list. thats how i redownloaded some games like super stardust and dlc i bought before.

Sancho
Sancho

You shouldn't even have to download them. Just go and "purchase" them, then it will take you to the download screen and you can just exit out of that and that little red bag means its yours. Then you can come download it whenever. I do that with the Plus stuff I don't have the games for so if I get them later I can come back and download it whenever I want.

Good Luck LBP is amazing.
