Maybe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 isn't the only big announcement Activision has planned for this month.

Another name is starting to make the Internet rounds: "Call of Duty Online." First up, you can find more evidence for MW3 by checking out a screen capture of the new Official PlayStation Magazine UK . As you can see, there's a big ol' green 3 with the tagline, "The biggest game in the world returns." That's pretty clear, yes? But then there's the rumor that an online-only CoD is in the works, and that both projects will be revealed in May. Now, personally, I would want MW3 to be single-player-only and this CoD Online to be the massive multiplayer online experience everyone wants.

Oh, come on…why not? Just make MW3 as long or longer than Crysis 2 , pump all your resources into making the campaign insanely amazing, and do the same with a dedicated multiplayer CoD. If Activision ever wants to appeal to those who really don't care about multiplayer, and don't feel like shelling out $60 for a brief campaign, this approach might work. But what the hell do I know? They make billions off this franchise as is.

You all realize that if Activision made a CoD Online like World of Warcraft; i.e., a subscription-based MMO of sorts, PLUS distributed a full CoD title to those who don't want that format…they might make trillions, for the love of God.

Combining WoW and CoD, the two most lucrative franchises of the generation, sounds EXACTLY like Activision.

People would have to link and Directly Deposit their paychecks to an ActiVision account for COD online. Or their "PARENTS" account in most cases.

That would be the only thing that would make me pick up a COD game again. I loved the single player campaign in COD 4, but it's been going downhill ever since. Only thing improved was multiplayer, and I never really cared for it. Only jumped online whenever friends were on.

But to have MW3 concentrate solely on a huge and lengthy campaign with a variety of mission types, gameplay features and other cool stuff to do (like the cod 4 sky bombing mission, love it every time) I wanna see a repeat and expansion on that!!

And Ben, you forgot to mention the infinity ward business, and how it may impact the quality of this new title, or are you reserving that for another article? Personally, I think the game's quality might take a dip with infinity ward just a ghost of what they once were (pun intended) but if these three studios can work well together, we cod haters might just be surprised with one of the best offerings yet!!

Here's hoping the campaign gets a little more attention this time. And a little more variety. Not everyone loves multiplayer, especially us older gamers.

After looking up what "lucrative" means I now can say that I agree with you Ben. Activision is done getting my money. That company has done nothing but pissed off gamers these past few years.

… The only thing is that I have a hard time to picture exactly *how* they were going to make COD a MMO. What kind of world setting, quests, tasks, what should the players do in this persistent world?

COD multiplayer style gaming is so fundamentally different from mmo style gaming that I can't see how they possibly could make that transition.
Unless of course they just take the brand and basically create an entirely new game with few, if any similarities whatsoever with the COD games. But how would that be received, both by the mmo crowd and the cod crowd?
Naah… I think they must have something else on their mind.

I have to agree with Dancemachine55. I've never been a big CoD fan and share Ben's sentiments that this and similar games are responsible for the wave of twitch gaming popularity. But, if they took it into MMO territory, with real-time "wars" taking place, with different clans working on different fronts, I might actually be interested in CoD, and MMOs for the first time.

I mean, think about it. The server you select dictates which country or region you fight in, and for whom–Italy, Israel, the U.S., or resistance groups, perhaps, each with its own goals for the war, perhaps overthrowing a corrupt government or repelling resistance forces. Then, Activision has a dedicated team constantly evaluating the progress of the war on each of the different fronts and creating new quests every week or so that will give each side at a particular front a new advantage–aerial surveillance, artillery, NPC support troops, etc. It would be a highly dynamic environment that could be even more competitive than the current CoD multiplayer atmosphere, and the constantly updating quests would encourage replay and sever dedication, with no repetition or grinding. Man, I would definitely play that game.

Yes a pvp element in mmo's are quite fun indeed… But it would not be "cod" as we know it.

Anarchy Online has an excellent solution to this called "the Notum War" where guilds fight over land to place these mining towers. Each tower give a small bonus to the entire guild, like "+1 dexterity", plus a similar bonus to the individual owner of the tower.
So because there are real, ingame advantages to winning these battles these fights are fierce, it's a "survival of the fittest" indeed.

And of course, on the homepage there is a map showing the game world and the current state of ownership, grouped by faction (there are three factions in this game).

It's a real shame none of this is available for the consoles, we really do miss out on something.

They could just make the same old cod and make you pay monthly. Just add new maps and guns as updates.

I don't see them creating a single player COD title at all. That would eliminate the lucrative MAP PACK schematic they have going on. Or at least dampens it. And we all know Acti will not allow that. MW3 will have both single and multiplayer, COD Online will release alongside of it.

There is no doubt in my mind that this idea was on the table when the Blizzard/ActiVision merger took place. The money generation potential is mindboggling. If they connect this to Facebook somehow and we are looking at the future rulers of the earth.

Yep I'm all burnt out on this franchise. I won't be buying another one no matter they do. Battlefield 3 will be taking my money for the war shooter and also the many other great titles coming.

Agreed. Battlefield 3 is already on my wanted list.

If Acti wanna get my money, they really have to wow me with the greatest COD single player campaign they've ever designed. Sadly, nothing has compared to cod 4 MW, not even black ops. MW 2 and Blops had no standout moments that are memorable. CoD 4 had heaps!!

Most of my friends are convinced battlefield 3 is the way to go, so at least I won't be forced to get CoD this year just to play with friends. Can't wait for the franchise to die or get a complete overhaul ad update with new engine and everything.

I play COD online quite a bit, but if Modern Warfare 3 where to be only single-player, as long as it was the best one of the franchise by far, I would be happy with that. I really could see Activision making COD online subscription based, but I know for a fact im not going to pay for it, I have plenty of better multiplayer shooters to play.

I'm just burnt out on shooters altogether. Resistance 3 might be my last one for a while. Have no interest in Brink at all.

Should I get Battlefield 3 on console or PC? I got a GTX 460 with 4 GB ram. Would that be enough? If most friends get it on console, should I go the inferior version to play with them or the superior version on pc to have the greatest single player experience?

Dancemachine55
Dancemachine55

BTW, have zero interest in a subscription for a CoD based online. If people can verse each other for free on the standard games, why would they pay extra to do the same? Just doesn't make sense!!

Activision pushed the franchise too hard, and now we might finally see it fall to the ground. Hopefully!! Activision is great at milking a franchise dry without innovating. This will either signal the end of CoD or at least move the annoying CoD fans and their high-pitched voices away to a secluded play space for them. Good riddance I say!!

My levels of care for MW3 are unaffected.

A CoD MMO on the other hand sounds like it will make depressingly high amounts of money and destroy the lives of millions twelve year olds everywhere.

…. to be exclusively unveiled during MS's E3 press event along with their new console, the "CoD-Box" =p
Displayed on the unit is a graphic logo of a fish with a hook in it's mouth connected to a fishing line being reeled in by a money symbol. And Bobby Koticks signature embossed across the DVD disc tray.

And that concludes my story.

Since Modern Warfare, I've said "This is my last COD" Then I see the trailer for the next and I'm like "Okay. One more.". I've always liked how every trailer is COMPLETE gameplay, so all the cool stuff you see, you're actually able to play.

Recently I went back and replayed the campaigns for COD4 and Black Ops. I know COD gets a lot of hate and more focus on the multiplayer but I think the single player in COD games are pretty damn fun. The only issue with them is the length, with all the resources and people Activision has working on COD games there's no excuse for the campaigns being so short.

I would like to see a full DVD's worth of single player COD content.

Speaking of DVDs, Amazon currently has a LA Noire $15 pre-order bonus. That's just $15 per DVD for those who opt for that platform.
It,d be like 3 games worth of content for some gamers out there. Good deal.

Oh yeah, Im having too much fun =p
Must be this twitch inducing energy drinking. I'll make an effort to contain myself before the caffiene crash.

Never played COD,just never had the strength to.I've seen gameplay videos & reviews & so many people like it but it just looks like an average FPS to me.I already have already set which games i would get this year:

Uncharted 3,infamous 2,& elder scroll:skyrim(my girlfriend is an elder scroll fangirl so i have to give it a shot).

While I think that might be a good idea, I'm almost positive that the single player only version wouldn't sell very well.

Most of the people who did end up buying it would probably be people who don't do any research, would get home and start screaming, "Where's the multiplayer?"

I see the CoD hate is out in full force this afternoon. I'm not one for MMOs, but if it brings some creative online play I can certainly see a large percentage of CoD fans signing up. Thing is, will Activision be splitting their fans or simply dividing the ones they already have? Bah, they probably don't care.

hey, a only online COD can help the COD franchise. Look at it like this. If all these crazy COD players who only care about online go to this new Only online COD then the yearly installments of COD will be improved a lot more, better gameplay and a great storyline.
Don't you think?
sounds good to me.

Heh… A CoD article only a day after my BO review goes live >.> (self-plug)

No seriously, this news doesn't really interest me. I was entirely unimpressed with BO, and MW3 will surely have the same effect. And of course, a CoD-online, while a great concept, holds no interest on me. The only thing is though: If they were to do it, I can't for some reason imagine it being all that different from MAG. Say what you will, but that's the comparison I'm drawing.
Peace.

Well, I have to admit, despite me hating CoD, the MMO CoD thing does sound kinda interesting. Too bad it'll probably end up being the exact same multiplayer that all the games have, just with a subscription tacked on. Which is a stupid idea IMO, but would the CoD fanboys really give a sh*t?
