Sources: No New PlayStation Or Xbox Until 2014

Historically speaking, we should be preparing for the next round of consoles right now.

But according to various industry sources, neither Sony or Microsoft are prepared to launch into the next generation until 2014. This according to Kotaku ; it seems the two companies are seeking to extend the current console cycle, regardless of indications that Nintendo will launch a new system by the end of 2012.

One industry insider said, "Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better." Other anonymous sources say Sony and Microsoft are thinking about 2014 as a target date, although 2013 is a possibility "if either company feels pushed."

As for what to expect, the source believes that any new Xbox in 2013 would be little more than a Kinect-upgraded system, rather than a full next-gen console. This source claims MS has no idea what parts would even come in the next Xbox, and the company is "wrestling with whether to be profitable on day one." M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon added:

"I think we'll see a game of chicken between Sony and Microsoft. Sony definitely isn't launching a successor before 2014 and could stand to benefit by having Microsoft launch first as PS3 builds in to North America and builds a strong position in Europe. Microsoft claims there's a lot more room in Xbox 360 for developers to max out, but here PS3 could have a strong advantage."

Personally, I'm good with what we've got now for another few years. How about you?

I'm fantastic about 2014 being the benchmark date. Even with Ninty coming out sooner, it will just mean that current gen multiplat games will finally play on their system.

It's kind of a shame that games will be held back for the next two years by 360, but thankfully Sony doesn't skimp on the phenomenal exclusives so there's no need for us to worry. MS will add their 1 gig to DVDs and pretend it's a huge deal while they scratch their heads trying to figure out what to do with Kinect, should be funny.

If sony and microsoft are creative, they'll merge and make the ps4 hardware but with xboxlive service ! Called the ps720 . Look at t mobile and at&t merge, both consumers will have the best service ever.

Errrr, yea….The AT&T and T-Mobile merger limits the field of competition thus giving consumers less choices. A MS/Sony merger is a terrible idea. It's the worst idea I have heard all week. Besides, I'd rather play in PSN than with the degenerates on LIVE.

Wii 2 – 2012
xbox 720 – 2013
ps4 – 2014

Sony/MS can talk now, but it all depends how successful launch Wii 2 will have. If Nintendo does very well, there is much higher chance we'll see all out war in 2013.

Personally, I would like to see new gen happen in 2013. I'm not sure why people are freaking out so much. Even if ps4 gets released in 2013, first decent game would come out around 2015 or so. And it's not like ps3 game development would stop immediately.

Life is too short people:)

Yeah I'm good on a ps4 til at the very least 2014. I heart my ps3. And besides that 3 years of gap between now and then will give us more time for amazing games.

Although, moost likely I wnt be picking up a ps4 until like a year or so later. After all the little kinks have been straightened out and the price drops atleast a little.

Now before you start thumbs downing me for saying the above, every new hardware that gets released always has some issues right out the gate. Be they big or small. This gen did.

Hell, even look at the 3ds.

But I. WILL definately be getting the ps4. Just probably later rather than sooner. But that's all gravy with me.

I don't see any point to make a ps4 until we have sth better than a blu-ray disc, I just don't see any point to have a ps4 running the same blu Ray disc, at this point, can anyone imagine what are the next gen media form to carry the game? what is after blu -ray? if not, then what is the point to get a next gen PS4 with pretty much the same media form?

what is visually better than blu-ray? until the industry figure that out, otherwise, the PS4 is just sort of minor upgrade of PS3 or more like a PS3-2.

There are already blue ray discs that can hold up to 100gb and they aren't compatible with the PS3. They are also working on a blue ray disc that can hold up to 500gb to 1tb.

kraygen

Jawknee, it's true that currently the ps3 and other blu ray devices aren't compatible with blu ray discs of that size, but according to information on wikipedia all blu ray devices should simply need an update to be able to utilize the blu ray discs with that many layers.

Jawknee
Jawknee

I don't know how reliable that info is but when I first read about the new Blue Ray discs they specifically said an update wouldn't work for the PS3. Other devices yes but the PS3 would need a hardware update.

RobiinzZ
RobiinzZ

Yes, i agree with Jawknee, i remember reading that the ps3 would definitely need a hardware upgrade for higher capacity discs.

But a new disc format really isn't needed. Panasonic i think have already created a 16 layer 1tb prototype disc they wish to bring out in 2013 (or something like that)

But i've also read Sony could release a new format since it helps keep piracy down.

kraygen

I know what you're talking about. Initially when they were working on upgrading blu ray discs to hold more data they were claiming hardware upgrade was necessary.

Edit:2008 pioneer developed a 16 layer 400GB backwards compatible blu ray disc. I'll put link in separate reply. Supposedly they were supposed to be available 2010 but I haven't seen them. Most likely due to who would need a 400 GB blu ray disc.

Oh and the blu ray association does have plans to release a 1TB disc in 2013, as RobiinzZ said, but it will require some new form of ultra-violet/blue hybrid laser.

So for it a hardware upgrade would be necessary.

How did the xbox360 get the jump on the ps3 a year earlier?? I hope the next ps3 is dead last. Maybe at least a year or two later, even ten years like they said.

I want the quality and detail to have a huge jump that has to be seen to be believed, like the worst looking wii game to the best looking ps3 game or greater.

Sidenote, the wii2 has to be killer, cause, if you own both the ps3 and xbox, why purchase a third or another system?

There saying it has a controller with a 6 inch high def screen and it can download games from the console 2 it. And, there saying it has similar or equal graphic quality to that of the console.

Do you know how much that would cost? Just the controller alone? And there saying that this console is completely upgradeable, I don't think there just talking about hard drive upgrades either. I don't know, we'll see.

Jawknee
Jawknee

Because they rushed their console so they could be first resulting in a shoddy console with a 30% plus failure rate.

As for your question about why buy a Wii2 if you already own a PS3 and/or a 360? Because Nintendo has great first party franchises that are worth playing.

The Wii 2 can very well extend the life of PS3 and Xbox. Well think about it. If similar hardware specs across all 3 platforms, what is the reason to upgrade to PS4? In this gen where developers favor multiplatforms, PS4 will probably get shoddy ports or held back in quality anyway.

New games probably sell better on Xbox 360 and PS3 than Wii 2 due to the larger install base. For the next 3-4 years, Microsoft and Sony get sales boost from Wii 2.

I highly doubt MS or Sony are nervous about Nintendo releasing a new console. The silly rumor is that Rockstar has a dev tool for the next Nintendo console and may very well release GTAV on it, but, in parentheses, it'll come out on PS3/360 as well *wink wink*.

I can't blame Nintendo for trying, but it's too damn late. Gamers have bought their consoles. No one, and I mean NO one, is going to buy the next Nintendo to play sissified versions of the adult games they can already buy on their current HD consoles.

Sony and MS have a grip on real gamers and they know it. That's why they're more than happy to milk this gen for many more years.

Jawknee
Jawknee

Ummm…if the Nintendo console is more powerful and devs go the extra mile to make their games shine on the console, I will be buying those games. So you can't so "no one".

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

But Jawknee, why would they go the extra mile with Ninty when they clearly won't with PS3?

Jawknee
Jawknee

Maybe the new Nintendo will be more development friendly. Maybe what ever Nintendo offers will spark developers interest. Who's knows? No one knows. So we can't make "absolute" statements like "no one, I mean NO one will buy sissified games blah blah". Time will tell. Alienage knows just about as much as I do about Nintendo's new console and how gamers and developers will receive it which is jack. Ha.

Besides, for me, I buy Nintendo hardware to play Nintendo software and if third parties want to join the mix then that's just a bonus. I get sick of hearing this nonsense about how Nintendo fans "aren't real gamers".

Come ON Jawknee. No way in hell. That's the kind of retarded mentality Sony had when they were launching the PS3. They absolutely OWNED the marked with PS2 and thought hey, all those customers will upgrade to the PS3. BZZZz! WRONG!

Wii's being in everyone's home is the very reason the Wii 2 won't sell. It'll be too expensive, the gimmick is old, and despite what you think about devs jumping ship to a more powerful machine, no, Nintendo has not, does not, and WILL not have good relationships with 3rd party devs. Or are you telling me 25 years later, Nintendo is going to pull a miracle out of it's red hat?

Take another look at the Wii 2. Rumors are, it's coming with a newfangled controller. It's called a "gamepad." Isn't THAT revolutionary now…

You made an absolute statement that isn't true. I myself am proof you are wrong. You can't say "no one, I mean NO one" when I am one of those people who is going to be picking a Wii2 when it launches and I'm pretty sure there are other loyal Nintendo fans like me who will do the same. My only point is you don;t know how it's going to turn our. None of us do. They haven't even announced the console and prospective launch date isn't even until the end of 2012. That's plenty of time to build steam. You can have your opinion of what you "think" is going to happen but cannot profess to "know" whats going to happpen.

Milk it, milk it, please. I somewhat agree Alienange. I'm just as intrigued on the upcoming m rated hardcore kinnect only games. It wouldn't surprise me if they release additional controllers for the kinnect that was suppose to be a human controller.

It still baffles me that ign doesn't give sony's move it's props for m rated games, where xbox is offering only revamped wii casual friendly games for the kinnect.

As I expected, MS and Sony aren't worried about the Wii 2. Good for them. This gives MS and Sony the edge to destroy the Wii 2 hardware wise and most likely software wise with the PS4 & The new Xbox.

2014 is perfect for sony cause ps3 still has plenty of power left depending on whos the dev are. ms on the other hand need a new console by next year maybe 2013 at the most. the new tech that's out now for pc users like better video cards and ram power, etc is just going to make the ps3/360 way more outdated if they wait till 2014.
i know sony/ms aren't scared of what Nintendo has if they announce a new console this year. only problem is if Nintendo announces a new console with similar tech like pc have now, sony/ms are in deep crap. because than most big devs are going to develop more for Nintendo new console than ps3/360. its true believe it or not the hardware in both ps3/360 are slightly outdated compared to what tech is available now. though really its just the video cards/ram that's the outdated tech in the consoles. i just hope devs dont start getting to lazy and half ass their games if they have to wait till 2014 for sony/ms to announce new consoles.

@jawk

Yeah for the 3ds the black screen of death was the main problem. But I believe they are making or made a patch for it. There was also other problems with it, like some peoples games weren't loading at all. Not sure if that would be the console or the cartriges.

If I remember correctly there was a few more minor ones, but from what. I read on g4, nintendo is diligently working on solutions.

So before you buy one, just read up on it. I wanna get one too, eventually, for oot of course.

I don't think the ps3 needs an upgrade until 2014 for sure, but I wouldn't mind if MS and Nintendo came out with something new before hand so that our multiplat games could stop being gimped.

Whatever MS releases it'll be more of a 360.5 than anything else. Kind of how the 360 was really just a barely upgraded xbox.

i don't get why people don't want a new sony console until 2014. we are 5yrs into this console cycle, and that's a lifetime in terms of computer technology. we get so many games at sub hd resotuions and chugging framerates. i'm ready for next gen now. i want the 1080p/60fps that was talked about before the ps3 came out, we didn't get that.

when i play a game like kz3 i start to imagine what a kz game would like on a next gen system, and get excitited. 2013 would be a better date, and i also think it would be foolish to underestimate the nintendo factor in this equation. no one thought they would be where they are now.

Nintendo's new console can't be THAT much more powerful than what is already offered on the PS3. Nintendo needs to do this so they could get third party support, i.e. the same games that will be on the PS3 and 360 will now also be on Nintendo's console. Something that wasn't done as much for the Wii.

And echoing what Jawknee said, alot of us don't want to drop $400-600 on a new console. I didn't get my PS3 slim until the beginning of last year! I'd like to get a solid 3 more years out of it. And it'd be down right amazing if I could have gotten 9 years out of my 360 (not counting the 2 new 360's I got from MS as a result of the RROD) before having to buy a new console. I HATED the fact that there was only 4-6 years in between consoles. By the time you wait for a price drop there is already a new console on the horizon.

As cool as it would be to see what Killzone 4 would look like on the PS4, I'm fine with waiting until at least 2013-2014. Even then, I'll have a hard time justifying buying a new console within the first year of its release.

I don't want to see a PS3 until at least 2014, there's still a horsepower under the PS3's hood.

On a angry note, the company that I sent my PS3 out to for repair, sent me a email (with pics) Monday afternoon, telling me that they received it, but both the box & my PS3 arrived in damaged condition.
The right side near the front is pierced & crushed in like someone took a hammer to it.

I'm so frigging pissed at these f*cking gorilla package handlers at the USPS!!!!

I ran over to my post office but the post master said the claims guy only works from 2AM to 10AM. WTF, who puts claims in at 2 in the morning?

Anyway, the jerk-off post master tried to hee-haw around with me about the insurance claim, but I gave him a ultimatum, "I have $500 insurance on that package, so rest assured that I will have this fiasco resolved to my satisfaction, one f*cking way or another".

So now the repair shop has put my repairs on hold till I can grab the claims guy & find out what they intend to do. The shop tells me they can still repair it, and to replace the outer shell will cost me another $75, but I'm wondering if that will change my serial number on the PS3, & I don't want that cause I wanted all my paperwork & insurance papers to stay the same.

I'll post more on my saga once I see this claims guy.

GRRRRRRRRRR
