This year's Call of Duty better be the bee's knees. The competition won't take a drubbing lying down.

Last year. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops launched at opposite ends of the year. In 2011, Battlefield 3 and the new CoD (expected to be Modern Warfare 3 , despite no official announcement) will likely clash in November. DICE has made a lot of boastful claims about their new title, powered by the excellent new Frostbite 2 engine, but those claims appear to be justified…just watch the full 12-minute gameplay trailer below.

It's just one of those games that should be polished to within an inch of its life; "professionally produced" is a good description. We don't expect much in the way of hitches and glitches ( that'd be disappointing), but we do expect a defining shooter that can stand with the best of the best. Better than Killzone 3 ? Who knows? Maybe. Better than CoD? Perhaps. It'll be a very interesting fall, nonetheless.

For those wondering what a glimpse of the next gen could look like, this could be a reasonably close indicator of what MS might be showing next year with the next Xbox.

As for next gen material?
Its a youtube video so the quality isn't the best but their doesn't seem to be any graphical leap so i say no its not next gen material, just a developer talking up its product which is fine untill you start saying stupid things!
The ps3 could make a better looking bf3 game if it was exclusive imo.

I think it's important to keep in mind that the console versions will not look as good.
Textures, lighting, geometric complexity, filtering and resolution will all be paired back. DX11 games are using rendering techniques that can not be done the same way on the RSX or Xenos. There's an outside chance they could do some custom stuff on SPUs, but it's unlikely. Especially considering that a portion of the SPUs are already tied up doing the the threaded multi-core calculations of what the 360 would be doing.

This far outstrips what the PS3 can do… can you blame DICE for wanting a console upgrade… poor PC people, they have been held back for years because of the consoles…

Imagine games specifically made for PC and completely optimised for it…

And I'm sure DICE wants new consoles so they can show off their shiny new Frostbite 2.0 engine in the form of a launch title. Beat Activision to the punch, who still are using the same engine from Call of Duty 2 that launched alongside Xbox 360 back in 2005.

Technologically gaming PCs have the power to destroy any console. But the fact still remains that the PC gaming eco-system is frought with piraters, making for infertile publishing soil. Several devs and pubs have expressed that they will not make PC exclusives for this reason alone. Sad, but it's a grim glimpse at what can happen to a gaming platform when secluded self-serving jerks place their desires before the rest of society.

The nature of economics will force them… they have to have a slice of that market to survive, or at least continue to grow and expand. The issue is that if you were a PC developer originally, and then you moved onto consoles, you would probably always develop with the PC in mind, first and foremost; and then tackle the task of getting the game onto consoles. As we have seen with some games, this can go horribly wrong.

PC version of Mafia is leaps and bounds ahead of the poorly PS3 conversion. Whilst the PS3 could pretty much pull it off, with all the bells and whistles, they didn't bother to convert it or make a decent job of the conversion at all. That is why I never bought the game. Even the 360 version of Mafia is better.

This video is a great testament to the new GPU technology and Direct-X available to PC owners. M$ will be planning something big for the next 360 upgrade in order to perform at this level and above in 2 years time.

I am sure Sony will up the anti now… they will have to give us hardware that is x4 to x6 the order of magnitude of what we have today, so it could handle BF3 with ease, in full stereoscopic 3D at 1080p for each eye. Its the only way Sony can stay ahead…

As for me… I have to announce something… I am going to purchase a very high end PC to play this game… this game deserves it, and because my rig will be fully expandable, I can upgrade as needed in the future. This game has pushed me onto getting a PC… I needed something and this was the catalyst.

Does it mean I will not use or play my PS3… absolutely not, of course I will still use it as there are some great exclusives to collect still. Uncharted and Last Guardian will continue to show the way for the PS3, but for some games you simply need a PC… it's like playing a movie 🙂

BF3 is a paradigm shift; like GoW, GT, Heavy Rain and Uncharted were/are… pushing both tech and story telling to the limits on consoles… BF3 will be a game changer in its own right… It will push PC and console developers to start adding those touches of realism that makes BF3 look and feel so immersive… like a film.

Resistance 3 looks a little second hand now when comparing… KZ3 stands firm as the best console shooter, but even with KZ3 tech, BF3 in comparison, adds another dimension to the immersion with its gritty realistic scenes and real-world lighting and shadow casting. It looks ray-traced to some extent. All PC owners can finally rejoice and know their equipment is being pushed. Similarly with Crysis 2, I think the best version is the PC version as well.

Would be great to get Highlanders comments on the video once he has seen it… remember, turn up the volume.

Considering that we haven't been able to directly compare and contrast the console and PC versions, I'm not sure we can say there's going to be a giant gap. I've seen Crysis 2 on a PC and it looks better…not enough to matter to me, though, and not enough to matter to those who aren't exceedingly anal about visuals. I doubt it'll be much different for Battlefield 3.

Paying a very large sum of money for what may only be a slight graphical upgrade in one game just seems a little silly to me, that's all.

Temjin001

I dunno, I think 1080p w8xMSAA+16xAF running at 60fps would not be considered anal to be able to really appreciate that kind of upgrade. I think you'd have to be a monkey or a girl =p not to see a sizeable leap.
Would I lay down 2k to have BF3 now for it to look like that? Heck no, not right now on my budget. At the most, this vid makes me glad to know whats in store for us console gamers in the coming years. I can wait. And I'll save a load of cash by doing it.

Okay. Back to work.

Wise words Ben; in my particular position though I have needed a PC replacement since I was not able to run Linux on PS3 anymore.

I wanted a general purpose PC a few years back to do surfing and word processing; and not necessarily having one to play games on it, because the PS3 was promising so much. Therefore I didn't feel i needed an additional machine.

Running Linux earlier on was great as I was able to do everything i needed. The low ram was a frustration, but other than that particular constraint, running Open Office and browsing with FFox was great on PS3 Linux…

As I can't do this anymore on my PS3, using a 9 year laptop for general computing tasks is getting tiresome and slow… so why not take the plunge and go out and get a decent machine?

May as well get it to play BF3 in the Fall, good timing. By the end of the year further improvements to mother boards and GPU's would have been made, so the machine will be top of the line tech and I will spend enough on it to really make it last… at least 5 to 8 years.

A few of my peers have PC; nonetheless, when I show them what the PS3 can kick out they always leave impressed; especially the exclusives.

These guys have 12 gigs of ram on their motherboards and are sitting with the latest GPU cards with 2gig ram. So they are already enjoying real HD gaming so to speak. I will join them at the end of the year – specifically for these types of games which I feel will be developed for the PC platform first and foremost, and then go through the conversion process to "fit" the game onto home consoles.

I would expect the next wave of consoles to be closer to their PC counterparts on release, with much more ram included on the outset. I wouldn't be surprised if some expandability options are also included in some way, shape or form. It may be a closed system, but hardware upgrade cycles seems to be accelerating, therefore adding "expandability" options into future consoles may help extend their lives further still…

With regards to PS3; no way am I giving up on her. There is plenty of exciting things to discuss about PS3 gaming, and we have the best place to do it on the web…. PsxExtreme… so this doesn't change a thing for me… I need a PC and I will celebrate getting it with a purchase of BF3 for it. I needed a real push to make the decision, and this has done it.

BF3 for consoles could look just as good, but all be it, at lower resolutions. Probably sub 720p. I wouldn't be surprised if the shadow casting issues are still present, and that we will see some visual artifacts with environmental and texture pop in (Red Dead Redemption – sigh) and others.

Anyway, with the PS3 exclusives still looking at employing all that Sony trickery, SPU anti-aliasing techniques and advanced streaming technology, we should still see some awesome displays of what the aging PS3 can do…

What else can I say… at least she is aging gracefully…

Well, that's fine. At least you have your reasons. 🙂

Personally, I just can't ever seem to find a single PC exclusive I desperately need to play, and nothing I've seen in terms of graphical differences make me want a high-end PC. Maybe I'm just too old to care about the sharpness of a brick in a wall. 😉

Besides, there is a distinct visual presentation difference I seem to notice, in that console games – especially PS3 exclusives – tend to have far better color saturation. Even the best PC titles seem to have this certain sci-fi, almost monochrome slickness that diminishes the richness of hue and color, while maybe enhancing specific detail. There's more to a picture than just intricate detail, after all.

This is why I see Uncharted 2 – and Uncharted 3 – as a cut above anything else in the gaming world, and that includes anything a PC can do. I'm not sure why developers don't use any extra power in a PC to make a more realistic – rather than a more detailed – presentation. Just my two cents on the whole issue.

Qubex

Ben, you are very right there.

The one thing that struck me about Uncharted 2, and why it blue my PC colleagues away was that colour and the environment modeling which was so freaking good. But Naughty Dog and Santa Monica are a cut above the rest.

The MotorStorm Apocalypse environmentals are also very good I have to admit… and, happy to report, they have managed to somewhat tame those nasty shadow artifacts the dogged the first Motostorm game. The shadows this time around are smoothed out and blurred, creating a softer shadow masking artifacts far more easily. The engine has been vastly improved.

Uncharted 3 will be a jump from Uncharted 2. This will make PS3 owners believe the unthinkable. It will be one of those moments where you look at the screen and shake your head and say, " is this really a PS3 game". It will be very good, so good infact that people would question why they would ever need to consider a high end PC for some of their gaming… yes, it will be that good… but still, I think for some games, some developers specifically – if one can afford it – it would be great to have the PC option to fall back on…

I am intrigued by BF3 on the consoles… I think it should translate well. If DICE can use each target platforms best features, they could make a cracking game… I fully believe they will pull something out of the bag. What would disappointed me though would be if BF3 ends up being better on the 360 than the PS3… I hope that will not be the case as has been the case for so many multi-platform titles in the past 🙁

We wait for the first console videos to release… then everything should become much clearer for all of us…

Sony… it's your turn to role the DICE – oO

"the fact that fans are making better looking stuff on the developers engine then what they are is just pathetic!"

I have yet to see any fan, or anybody else for that matter, make anything as impressive as Crytek has shown with CryEngine 3 in this preview video for the engine. What others developers have done in their games CGI segments, Crytek has done even more impressively in the actual game itself. Though it is too bad that we have to wait for the DirectX 11 patch, which has been confirmed now by Crytek, to see how Crysis 2 was expected to look.

And this engine is still in it's infancy.

Well it was interesting reading an article on the "making of crysis" on Eurogamer.

Exactly what I have been saying about the lack of memory and how crippling it has been… Not to mention what a pig the RSX is…

"GPU side, when programmed properly, they are fairly similar. We just have to be conscious of the clear handicap on PS3 RSX in terms of vertex processing, but other than that, on fragment processing side they are relatively similar, both have their strengths but such differences become irrelevant in the long run, especially when compared to PC platforms," Sousa says, assessing the overall experience of working with the two consoles.

"My finger-pointing at Microsoft/Sony would really be on the memory side. It's way too low, and the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective. I would really like to see next-gen console platforms with a minimum of 8GB."

sony went out and spent a bomb developing a new optical medium, spent a bomb on a new architecture, then skimped on the ram.
sure its fast, but whats the point if its so small?

Almost anything that's been out this year is an eye popping improvement over CoD. Ha

Qubex, yes but as Ben said most can't or are not willing to spend hundred or even thousands of dollars for a PC rig that can or will run it.

Qubex
Qubex

Yes true Jawknee… but you know what? Depending on the personal circumstances of individuals and how motivated they are to experience the latest and greatest… if something comes out that is really special, a paradigm shift… a new beginning of sorts, it may encourage people who otherwise would not purchase PC's for gaming to do so.

Similarly to the way Sony has been at the forefront of "creating" and "expanding" its market for 3D enabled content to be played, watched and enjoyed on their 3D TV's. People who want to experience it now, have made the effort to trade in their HD 2D screens for HD 3D screens. Did they really need it. No? Could they have afforded it? Maybe? At a push yes, but we would need to sell our existing TV first. Yes?

So in my case, and others, with people needing to upgrade, or people even having thoughts of possibly going the PC route for SOME of their gaming (not all), a game like BF3 may be the catalyst to spur them on.

BF3 maybe end up being so good people may simply say they are not willing to wait for the next console generation and plough ahead anyway and get a PC for general use and gaming… doesn't mean they will not get the PS4. They probably will, as I will; but the PC will go some way in getting you back to the cutting edge while we await the PS4…

Anyway, with imminent announcement of the Wii2 HD, that alone will start getting Sony and M$ to move their butts…
