Time Was An Issue With Uncharted 2 Multiplayer

You can bet Naughty Dog will take all the time they need to produce their masterful single-player campaign, but when it came to the multiplayer portion of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , it seems they felt rushed.

According to new details in GamePro , Naughty Dog admits the multiplayer element in U2 could've been better, "but they didn't have enough time to work on it." On the flip side, they want the multiplayer in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception to be top-notch; in fact, they want this new iteration to be "the go-to game for PS3 multiplayer." In regards to influences, the team cites great games like Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood , which is interesting, considering the open-world nature of those titles. Also, they added- "One thing we learned from UC2 mp was that damage/health should be the same or similar to single player." We imagine they learned a lot of things since Uncharted 2 , and we firmly expect a fantastic multiplayer experience when Drake's next adventure arrives later this year.

That being said, this is one franchise that absolutely needs to keep the focus on its bread and butter- the unbelievable single-player story. U2 was a cinematic and gameplay masterpiece from start to finish, and if U3 isn't, something went terribly wrong. If an ill-advised focus on multiplayer somehow hurts our precious Uncharted some time down the road…we're gonna cry.

"the go-to game for PS3 multiplayer."
gonna be a hard thing to do for this gen as its a very competitive with mp….would have to be pretty damn good although its also about recognition which uncharted doesnt get enough of in this day and age of shooter mp but u2s mp did have promise so im sure it can be done they are very good developers

absolutely agree. i think they are in for a real surprise if they think that's going to happen. it's just a first person shooters' market right now.

i also agree with ben they need to focus on the single player story, as i'm sure they will. i was pleasently surprised by uc2 multiplayer, though.

Well since Amy Hennig is writing the story I really doubt we will get single player as a second thought. She is a great writer. Also MP was added last minute it wasn't going to be included at all.

yeh wasnt mp supposed to be more of a test run in uncharted 2 set up to see what mp would be like for uncharted
yeh story should be really great judging from the other uncharted games

yeah, U2 was fantastic MP! The only gripe i had was for some invisible cheaters. But for the general experience, it was pretty good. Even better than Transformers: War for Cybertron. It's always an enjoyable experience (U2 MP).

How could the multiplayer of UC2 be any better? More maps? I can't wait to kick some @$$ in the UC3 multiplayer.

To be honest they HAD the greatest mp game on PS3…until that infamous 1.05 title update. UC2 MP is now only played by people on dial-up…just ask jawk. 😛

mp on uncharted was decent but not the best on ps3 man

There was lag and bad connections even before the "infamous" 1.05 update. The only thing I ever heard from anyone is whining and moaning about going back to 1.04. You know why? They had a lot of exploiters on that update thats why. I still think its the best MP out right now. Its the most fun I've had in MP besides Killzone 2 and Burnout Paradise.

i think killzone 3 and bad company 2 are the better mp games just more deep really

I'm talking about when they started mucking about with the game's mechanics when they didn't need to. However you have to admit lag was alot more apparant with lower health.

Oh & Godslim, it tottaly is, man. 😀

No other game has such refined controls. The cover system, climbing, blind-fire-in-mid-air, among others. All of this instead of a gun infront of you and just shoot anything that moves.

This game will be epic. The MP in UC2 was already solid in my opinion. Seems like it was kinda thrown together and def took a backseat to the SP campaign, but it was still a blast. Its unreal to think what Naughty Dog could do with MP with alot of time. I'd love to see them come up with some ridiculous open-world-esque type matches like there is in Red Dead Redemption. Uncharted is due for some kind of car/motorcycle chase scene….that'd be sick if they could incorporate that somehow into the multiplayer.

I hope they still have that photo capture mode that was so cool and made some pretty badass wallpapers with it actually. The bad guy with the gas mask and grenade belt looked cool in Black and White running down the street.

I know a lot of people love their mp, but I just rarely play it, so personally I'd rather all the man hours spent on mp go towards making a really long, really awesome sp campaign.

Who says an action/adventure game can't have a 40 hour long sp campaign? Now that would be awesome. I personally wouldn't miss the mp at all.

jimmyhandsome
jimmyhandsome

With a game like Uncharted, people would start to lose interest in it after hours 10-15, honestly. I couldn't imagine how few people would actually finish the campaign if it were 40 hours plus.

kraygen
kraygen

I don't see why. If a game has a good story why would people get bored? Lots of people spend over 100 hours on action rpgs. Why should an action/adventure game be any different, I think it would all depend on the quality of the game.

Dude, a game in the pulp genre cannot possibly be that long unless they dragged it out as much as the new Castlevania game. And that was a disaster of pacing IMO. Its basically a rule in the pulp genre not to have a plodding pace, otherwise you've failed at making pulp anything (movies, games, novels, comics, etc.). And with a 40 hour campaign, there would either have to be so many reveals that the plot became convoluted and confusing, or so few reveals that it got really boring. And neither of those are good obviously.

There is no game I have played more of online than U2.

Getting together with 4 guys from work and chatting for hours was hilarious!

An option for slightly larger, and smaller, matches would be appreciated. Having 8 per side, or even 2/3 would be interesting to have.

I love U2, and will be buying U3, but to be honest I really don't care about either games MP. Its all about the awesome SP for me, their MP is more like a bonus for me. Nice to know that their going to improve on their MP, but I want to hear how the SP is turning out, Ill save MP time for Battlefield 3.

Seems I'm one of few who thought UC was already the greatest MP experiance evar? Y'know whats crazy, I actually wasnt even planning on getting UC2 when it was announced (I hadn't even played the first). Then I got the beta…soon changed. As soon as I played my first match I knew this was so gunna be my MP game of choice for the next year.

I mean, literally you can play UC2 SP and get really good at it then you can jump straight into MP and be really good at it…that's how seamless it is. But what makes UC2MP the best is the PLATFORMING! You actually use it more than you do shoot, which can't be said for practically any MP game bar Assasins creed. That and how the levels are designed around it, it's just so..perfect. Oh, and this one line from Harry Flynn just makes you laugh everytime..

"SOn of a …… … BITCHthathurts." …well it's funny when it happens in-game 😛

Oh & my avatar is from UC2MP. Cool huh

Naughty Dog's rushed multiplayer is better than a lot of other devs multiplayer that isn't rushed.

Uncharted 2 is currently (and so far) the only multiplayer game I play online. My friends and I are having tons of fun with it. We're happy with the multiplayer we got with Uncharted 2, so it is very promising that Naughty Dog is going to make MP in Uncharted 3 even better.

But like what everyone says, I do hope that this would not affect the single player campaign. It is definitely Uncharted's strongest suit.

i really enjoyed the MP, by far the best MP on ps3 only 2nd to resistance 2.
especially the co-op that was soooooooo much fun, just a shame they did not give us more maps!
even the treasure hunter mode was allot of fun going up against the AI!
i hope they keep all the modes from uncharted 2, give us new ones too, and give us new maps!
please dont drop content like R3 is doing, sooooooooooooo gutted the 8 player co-op is gone!

uncharted multiplayer was fun, but the grenades were so annyoing, their explosion range was too big and everyone chucked em around everywhere coz they are so overpowered, appart from that the mp was fine i reckon, maybe just more guns and things to unlock would be nice

So wait, a multiplayer that was better than most other devs' multiplayers was apparently rushed and ND was unhappy with it? Are we going to be getting the best multiplayer ever with this one?

Of course, the single player's the main draw for me here, but to have an improved multiplayer would be exactly like it was in the last game (and probably then some since they seem so adamant about making it better): icing on the cake.

I just hope we actually get to drive a vehicle in an epic chase sequence this time. I mean, we've gone from firing a turret in U1's chase, to jumping from car to car and then using a grenade launcher turret in U2, so in U3 I hope that we get to drive one. Even if we don't get that though, its still a D1P for me.
