You know you have to absorb all the Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City information you can. It's like a bodily function for horror aficionados.

Capcom talked to OPM France about this new installment in the venerated franchise, and you can find much of that info over at NeoGAF : firstly, they call the new title a "spin-off" (big surprise there), and yes, we'll have four squad members who attempt to clean up Raccoon City. Producer Masachika Kawata confirmed that they're taking RE in a "new direction," which is why the game "doesn't have a number." He added:

"As you know it's our fifteenth anniversary, which is a long time for a video game series… Some players came to the series when it made a turn towards action [in Resident Evil 4] (still with horror elements, though). This design led the series towards third-person shooter.

The idea [to work with a Western developer] came up when we were working on Lost Planet 2," he added. "We didn't have any other teams internally to work on it. Western studios are known for their ease of development, and in terms of gameplay, this genre."

He went on to say that Slant Six was "well known for their online games and their coding skills," which is obviously what they were looking for. And if you're worried that the designers will sacrifice that patented fear for standard military shooter elements, Kawata attempts to appease you:

"I want to clarify something, even though [this is] a shooter, there are still tons of horror elements."

"the idea came up when we were working on lost planet 2"

that was such a massive success wasn't it? capcom used to be a great publisher, but they have done a poor job on this gen of consoles. their western approach has yielded notable flops such as dark void, and bionic commando. all their great producers have left, as well.

maybe they can turn it around after that pessemistic wacko for a ceo infanue has left. i just get sick of hearing the phrase western approach. slant six just about killed off socom so that remains a concern as well.

Slant Six….I really dont get why they would choose them from all of the other developers around the world.

No-one else was interested in putting another nail in the coffin of one of the most well-known franchises in video game history? Maybe Slant Six just had nothing else on the go, and Capcom decided that they were as good as any? Maybe they see a talent in the studio that we gamers have not yet been privy to? Come on, give them the benefit of a doubt.
Peace.

I hope they don't follow in RE4 and RE5 making it a third person shooter.
Please capcom invent a new camera system which is similar to RE3!

Didn't Socom Confrontation bomb and have terrible online connectivity? I only remember people complaining about how terrible it was trying to connect to a game. The gameplay footage of Confrontation looked terrible too.

What games do Capcom even develop in house anymore? These guys are so out of touch. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. These guys used to be a power house now they are just…well, sad.

That's why I'm curious that they say they have no in house people to work on it, what in hell are the in house folks working on? They don't do anything.

They do Wii/DS games… (and fighting games)

Apparently Capcom's focus has moved to developing new IPs in house, while outsourcing new games in older franchises to outsider companies. Mind = blown at such madness.
Peace.

The characters from the scans looks like they are from Lost Planet and if it plays anything like that it will surely be "tons of horror" to play.

Reaching a bit there?

I'm glad they said it was a Spin-Off. It seemed to me that all of these news sites kept referring to it as 6 in the series. There's no way I would have accepted this as 6. I am actually looking forward to seeing what they can do. This type of game in the RE world might actually be worth it. If we can walk and shoot I'm sold.

I am getting excited for this, I shall put it on my "watch" list. haha.

This is going into my "no fly zone". I'm appalled that it has become okay to admit that you no longer wish to put any effort into your games so you fast track them by erasing the past, switching to a more popular genre, and putting it in the hands of a faster developer who is basically a bug-factory.

other than marvel vs capcom i can't think of anything. maybe the monter hunter games, too. there has been a notable erosion of talent with the likes of mikami leaving. they probably are working on re6 as we speak, though.

re is still a great series, and i am pulling for re6.

While I've never been a fan of horror and thus not a fan of RE, putting any mention of Lost Planet 2 into a discussion about your new game, only makes me afraid to play the new RE.

I hated the controls for lost planet 2 and had no love for the game any other way either, so did slant six have anything to do with LP2? If so, I'm out.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've lost a lot of faith in this series since RE 4.

Clearly, PSXE isn't liking this much. I don't often tend to trust studio spokesmunchkins, but I'll make an exception here, because I want something that will scare me. Although, considering this is coming from a Capcom guy rather than a Slant Six guy makes me wonder just how truthful it is.

But y'know what? My hope in just about everything else has died, so I might as well let that little bubble within pop as well. It's a tenacious blighter though.
Peace.

god dam it crapcom, when will you learn?
YOUR FANS DO NOT WANT A SPINOFF, WE DONT WANT A L4D WANABEE, WE WANT OUT OLD RESIDENT EVIL BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
god! i give up!
wishing RE would stop being a mindless shooter and go back to being survival horror, is like wishing sonic would go back to the good old days!
never going to happen!

crapcom why has your company fallen?
why have you gone from one of the most profitable third party developers to one of the least?
hmmm?
why?
is it just a coincidence that ever since you started selling out your series your profits plummeted?
coincidence?

I'm optimistic…I don't mind them changing the game to a squad based TPS. My thing with RE is and has always been horror. After RE Nemesis the horror factor began to go down the drain. If this game doesn't have those throwback horror moments that made you jump then I'm not interested.

I miss the original when it was eerie. I miss the beginning of RE2 when the zombie jumps out the window at you unexpectedly. Even the Lickers that would drop out from the vents…man..what happened to RE?!

Scarecrow
Scarecrow

That licker scene still haunts me

RE just lost its identity this gen. RE4 was a nice departure but even as great as it was it derailed the series.

RE5's good, but I wouldn't say it's great.

I wish the series would start to focus more on the survival horror part, that's the genre they started…………. why can't they stick to it?

slugga_status

Man I remember the first time loading up Claire's disc and running down the alley and the zombie jumps out the window..then going into the gun shop and seeing the zombies eating the owner..man…classic

I never got a chance to RE4..but I had RE5 for a short time..but I was left wondering wtf happened to the zombies..the horror..and why is it sunny outside…just disappointed me..

There was once a point where we'd say "Resident Evil is survival horror at it's finest" now…that's an after thought.

at least it's a tps instead of fps. i just don't think these guys can code for the ps3 we will see.

great times playing re 2. the part where the zombies arms reach through the barricade and grab you was a great jump scare. loved the licker scene as well. nemesis busting through a wall in re3 was pretty cool too.

The mentions of Lost Planet 2 and how Western devs make games faster (which is basically praising the West because they think it'll help them) makes me even more concerned about where this franchise is headed.

They should either let RE die an honorable death instead of making more games that aren't even survival-horror, or go back to what made it good in the first place. I'm not a fan of RE, but for goodness sake Capcom, what are you doing?!
