God of War IV is coming. …well, we assume so, and recent evidence has hinted at a possible unveiling in the near future.
A mistake on an animator's resume may have spilled the beans early: SystemLink spotted the resume of someone who did some freelance work for Motion Logic Studios. Although the reference has been replaced with "unannounced PS3 game," it initially mentioned "God of War 4," so perhaps the cat is already out of the bag. Even the animator's personal site doesn't have any evidence of the game anymore…sounds to us like someone somewhere contacted him with an e-mail that might've read, "Yeah, maybe nobody told you, but you can't go talking about a new GoW yet. Get rid of it." However, it could also have been a mistake: when contacted by GameSpot , the animator said he merely used God of War as inspiration when taking the test for Sony.
He went on to say he is not aware of any existing GoW project. Well, we might believe him but even if we do, isn't it still fun to talk about Sony Santa Monica's next project?
Quite clever by him actually.
Put him in the spotlight for a few seconds.
i'm all for a new gow game, but a new ip would be interesting as well. if they do make a new gow game i hope they open up the enviroments a little instead the bulk of the game being in small, dark rooms.
kratos has already knocked off his enemies. i wonder who he's mad at now.
It doesn't necessarily have to take place after God of War III. It could be a prequel or a spin off.
That's what was wrong with GOWIII, those confines. GOWII had it right.
GoW3 just had a hub of sorts. I cant argue what GoW2 did was anything other than great with where the game took you. But GoW3 didn't do anything wrong. This was a game that could have taken place solely on Mt. Olympus and it would have been fine. I mean thats where GoW2 left and GoW3 started was Kratos climbing to the top so…
@Jawknee
I was under the impression that the 1st PSP GOW was a prequel so what are they going to do… make a prequel of a prequel??? A spin-Off… HMMMMM… maybe but I just don't right now maybe in the next 2 or 3 years.
No I don't think that they're making a GoW4.

Well that is an interesting slip if there ever was one… I am sure Sony and Santa Monica will be non to happy with that. The cat is out of the bag now… Rumours will surely spread like wild fire I am sure throughout the gaming community.
It would be great to see another GoW… from a technological aspect… can you believe that they could actually make further improvements to the GoW engine… I can only imagine
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
To be honest, I want to see the GOW engine used for something else other than a GOW game.
Let Kratos have a longer rest :), GOWIII and Ghost of Sparta both released only last year!
Heavenly Sword 2
You know Qubex, it makes me wonder if these slip ups are intentional if not simply for the purpose of keeping fans interested. I mean, Santa Monica is an excellent developer but I think everyone can agree that they don't have much out there yet besides God of War.
World may be on to something here.
Heavenly Sword 2, GOW style? Has promise in my book.
Going to have to agree with worldends on this one
actually im not so sure how unhappy they will be. lets face it almost every time theres a rumour (point me out if im wrong here) its come true and everyones like, ahaha we knew already, but all thats happened is Sony's managed to get loads of hype for a game/console they havent announced and now its out they can just push on. To me i think they leak this stuff quietly but controlled, to generate enough hype, and coz its pretty good free publicity.
I have nothing against GOW3, it was a great game but I'd LOVE to see Heavenly Sword 2 using an improved GOW3 engine!! Make it happen!!
I figured you'd be on top of this
I like the bottom.
I went and read the last paragraph again… Then I got it.
I wouldn't be surprised. During the God of War directors interview Stig refused to confirm or deny that there was a new God of War in the works. Pretty much an admission in my opinion. I for one am glad. God of War III is my favorite in the series and I only want more of what they achieved on the PS3.
I will never understand those who admit that games like God of War or Metal Gear Solid are master piece franchises yet prefer not to see another installment. These games aren't Call of Duty or Guitar Hero. They are much better and the people who create them give them a level of special attention not seen in with other developers.
I agree with you. Unfortunately your argument is probably somewhat of the same the CoD fans use. I really would like to see these franchises go further than just 3 or so games. Although franchises that have an end are good(Nothing can go on forever in my opinion), the end doesn't always have to come so soon! Give us more! Maybe the studio is a little tired of the series right now though. If they do a new IP I hope they come back to GoW right after.

"Unfortunately your argument is probably somewhat of the same the CoD fans use."
Probably, but they are delusional. haha
I just think it's wiser to bow out when the story is done or risk ruining the brand. Then it can take a hiatus and any returns or reboots are much more appreciated.
For instance I'm looking forward to the Tomb Raider reboot but after the franchise was so massively slaughtered I'm not as excited as I could be. It's more like welcoming back an annoying friend than an old flame.
I never thought Tomb Raider was any good. That franchise always seemed generic to me. Too busy playing Gran Turismo 2 and Final Fantasy on my PS1 to get into it. God of War is in a league of it's own. I don't think you can really compare it to Tomb Raider. That franchise seemed destine for failure from the start.
I agree with you Jawknee. I need another MGS as bad as I need another GoW, and same for UC3. These are 3 franchises I look forward to hearing about everyday.
Well at this point coming up on the 3rd Uncharted, this whole logic would mean ND should stop after that. I think it would be a huge mistake to halt any kind of progress with GoW and Kratos. Stig has huge amounts of imagination, thats why he is where he's at at Sony Santa Monica. Although I dont think the story was quite as good in GoW3 as it was in 1 or 2, everything else was leaps and bounds above the others. The boss battles in particular. There could have been more puzzles but come on this was a story of revenge, it was all about walking over the greek gods and a few titans along the way.

I think the big thing about GoW was that there was a defined story arc from the second to the third, and it still tied into the first game somewhat. But all along, there was only one real conclusion, and GoWIII got it there. Sure, Kratos is an immortal god and there are plenty of opportunities to take it further, but doing so, I feel, would cheapen the legacy. That's why I don't want another one.
MGS4 was a good conclusion for Snake, but there are still other characters to explore and other stories to be told within that universe. It can go on, but it should be Snake's story, and that's pretty well wrapped up. There's no need for another full entry.
Uncharted is different. Each game is a stand-alone entry, but the first two at least tie into each other. ND could theoretically go on for years, slowly aging Nate and Elena, growing their family, killing off Sully, and it really wouldn't be so bad because there is no huge story arc to complete.
I suppose it depends on a case-by-case basis, and when games have either almost no story, or a negligible one, you can do anything. If you have something highly story-focussed, then you basically trap yourself. My take on it.
Peace.
Yes, there's also hardly much games with the same genre has GoW and MGS, and every month a new damn FPS
Not comparable with Uncharted at all, every game is a self contained story in the life of an adventurer, not a single tale of revenge.
Not really comparing it to tomb raider except to say that you can overdo it and diminish the character by tacking new adventures onto them.
That was exactly the point I was trying to make. Is that yes the trilogy is over but they don't have to keep hounding on that. There's a ton of room to explore. If you look at Athena, or remaining titans, or any other avenue SM can come up with. I mean you always have to start somewhere.
I hear ya, it would be terrible to see it dragged. The good thing for the game though is that it's set in a time period where almost anything could happen and SM could make ot work.
as much as i would love to play as kratos again, i wish santa monica came out with a new ip. god of war 3 had a good end.
having said that if god of war 4 does get released count me in.
Yea I understand the want for a new IP. These guys are freakin talented. But like you, if and when there is a God of War IV, day one purchase for me.
OK, off topic for a sec…
I thought Ben would have posted the article I sent him today from the PSBlog about the Killzone 3's code for the SOCOM4 beta launching.
But since he didn't, and since my PS3 died, & as I had promised last week, I'll use this post for a second to give away my SOCOM4 code that I got with my KZ3 purchase.
Killzone3/SOCOM4 beta code…..
(must use all "CAPS" for letters)
CAA7-K7NT-BLPH
Happy tactical shooting to whomever gets to input it in first.
BTW, just let me know who it was that got in the beta.
Are you going to get it repaired, or are you buying a new one? At the very least, I hope you haven't lost any of your info :S!
i asked been to do a socom 4 article as well, and to give his impressions of the beta. i will match your spirit of generousity and give out my beta code as well.
KAL6-CENP-DDAE
sorry to hear about your ps3. i think i read you are going to get repaired in july. i would litteraly go into withdrawal if i had to live without my ps3 that long.
socom 4 looks and plays great. light years ahead of confrontation. remember to use your mic. it helps a lot.
Sooo….nobody has snatched up my SOCOM 4 code yet???
Victor321,
Well, I won't have any extra cash till July, but the plan is to get it repaired since it is a prized 60 GB'er.
Plus I also want to get a slim & put a 750GB or a 1T HD in it to use as a back-up(and also to have in my gaming collections).
BTW, I shouldn't lose any saves & such since I had already swapped out my old 60GB HD for a 640GB HD a few weeks earlier(but I did lose a couple games protected saves when I did the original swap-out…..GRRRRRR).
But anyways, I'll just re-swap in my old 60HD before I send it out & re-swap it out again for the 640GB once I get it back.

Well, I think he did a nice backpedal there but it doesn't wash, you wouldn't put "God of War 4" if you were just using GOW as your inspiration or whatever.
I hope what is going on is that it just doesn't have a name yet and will refer to a new God of War from a different myth cycle. I enjoyed the GOW series a lot but to do any more with Kratos would be overkill. His vengeance story is told, don't muck up the legend by screwing with things any further.
Yeah I think it would screw up GoW if they didnt include Kratos. Theirs a lot more story to tell with him. He would never get old.
But doesn't that basically mean retelling the same story with a different backdrop? I suppose they could change it up considerably by offering a more mellow main character (I have a problem with calling Kratos a protagonist… He's too angry for that). Nah, I think they need a whole new story.
Peace.
The next adventure could be one based on Norse mythology with an all new badass pro/ant-agonist.
There might be more elements to Kratos, but he isn't exactly the most dynamic character. At some point the game are just cashing in on his popularity by rehashing the past and that gets tricky.
Well we won't know for a while either way, but I smell a guy looking for attention.
Whatever they make will be great. What's with the GOW hate? Gamers these days are a sad bunch
No real GoW hate… just a desire to see it end when it should end and not be run into the ground.
the short version?
repetitive, boring, far to much backtracking, crap story, crap ending, repetitive gameplay, not many puzzles, too different from the original 2, not exactly up to GOW standards.
enough for ya?
@Lawless,
Run into the ground how? The last GOW was great. You're all acting as if they've ever done a bad GOW game.
This is probably the same crowd that doesn't want to see MGS anymore.
Seriously, I think video games' future is very bleak.
These kinds of gamers and how they see sequels is what's going to kill the industry.

Not really, we embrace good games, and id happily see an MGS5, because just like Mickey Bricks its never just one last time, but GOW3 to me, really has ended. It was a quest for revenge, and he killed everyone he needed to. A GOW4 probably will be very good, but no one wants to see a harry potter 8 where after the end, he have the final end where he battles another magical evil ****.
If its really ended, leave it there. Id much rather see a mirrors edge 2, than a gow4.
haha i love how every just ignores ______ whenever hes being a troll =)
On topic at long last. That evidence is circumstantial at best. The quick recanting of it is suspicious, but doesn't necessarily mean anything. It could be that he made a simple mistake and Sony wanted him to clean it up before everything got out of hand. Or it may have been a clever marketing ploy to start the hype train rolling for anyone quick enough to pick up on it.
As for me, I don't necessarily want another GoW. I think it was wrapped up and there is no need for it continue, but if there is another one, I'll certainly pick it up. There's too much quality at Santa Monica studios to pass it up. I'd rather see them take on something different though. New IPs FTW!
Peace.
you missed one important part, there looking for online programmers!
looks like MP may be coming to GOW!
but the rumors are saying its not a GOW game, SM have actually gotten there hands on heavenly sword!
biiiiiiiig scoop!
apparently this is NOT for GOW4, its actually for heavenly sword 2!
oh, now this would be so freaking sweet!
sony have given SM the license to heavenly sword and there doing a sequel!
funny, i was screaming for SM to do a sequel ever since NT said there not doing a sequel, and now its apparently happening!
ohhh, please make it so!
heavenly sword running on the GOW3 engine = epicness to the ninth degree!
Ben didn't miss that; he told us yesterday. You were in the thread…
