You know how everyone was complaining about the difficulty in Demon's Souls ?

Well, as far as developer From Software is concerned, those complaints fell on deaf ears. In fact, director Hidetaka Miyazaki says that rather than making the follow-up title easier, he plans to make Dark Souls even harder . This is enough to make even the most hardcore of gamers shiver and shudder, but it's true; he told Edge his diabolical plans:

"I have no intention to make the game any easier. In fact, I want it to be more difficult. The way I put it to my team is that we are trying to make the most difficult game it is possible to make, which at the same time can be conquered by those who persevere. It has to be firm, but fair."

We want any player to be able to clear any obstacle simply by learning from mistakes and paying close attention. Then, the reasons for failure must always be clear and understandable. Every problem must have multiple solutions, so players can tackle it in whichever way they want."

He goes on to say the controls can never be a difficulty generator, and that's something every critic knows: a challenge is one thing, a cheap challenge is something else altogether. And we have plenty of faith in these guys; they'll undoubtedly deliver a polished product. The only question is whether or not you can handle it…

Interesting, I like that. Actually, I like that a lot. I like it when games expect you to be intelligent about your decisions when clear signs are given for you to overcome.

'sigh' am I gonna have to break down and get Demon's Souls eventually, so I can be on board with Dark Souls?
Looks that way.. but I'm swamped with games right now so I've got time until then.

No intelligence required here Temjin, just die, pay for it, revise your timing, die, pay for it, revise your timing, rinse and repeat. Still I'd be interested in your impressions.

It requires focus, and thinking before you take the move, other wise you'll die. I like it to be hard instead of easy and not very rewarding.

@World you're just taking the easy way out by quitting. =/

Well thank you. I guess I just lost that need, but there's definitely something to be said for that feeling you get when you beat some jerk boss that has been kicking you around for days so you stand up and yell "Yeah, take that you fu*king b*tch!"

Getting to that point isn't much worth the hassle to me anymore though.

Sven, ur robbing yourself of a damn good game, at least rent it if possible or hell, it should be on sale as a greatest hits.

honestly once you learn the mechanics and the monsters, most of the game isn't that hard. The final boss is by far the worst, but a lot of the boss' have tricks that you can use to manipulate them into a less difficult victory.

Also if you really don't want a challenge, but want the experience, there is a way to cheat the final boss, it would make it the lamest final boss battle ever, but if you're not looking for a challenge it is there.

I liked that, world =)

I think there's too much controversy now over this matter for me to not take interest. I need to go get the game and find out for myself =)

Though, what I do find interesting is my bro's opinion. He didn't really lament that the game was all that hard. In fact, he beat it relatively quickly. Though, he is something of a "natural" with these game types, much more than me.

I played and enjoyed it on a rental. I beat I think 4 bosses or so?? I enjoyed it, but I made life hard at first starting out as a magician. lol

I know the type, I know a guy with the reaction time of a fly. He can pick up any game and whoop it. I'm just not that skilled anymore, maybe at 15 but not now. I think I burned too many brain cells.

Oh that is just awesome, DS's wasn't too difficult really. I'm pretty stoked for dark souks regardless of it's multiplat status. I do definitely enjoy a challenge, it's quite rewarding after you die and die but manage to conquer. Love it.

i totally agree with you about the game not being all that difficult like some make it out to be. Human error made it seem difficult, like swing huge weapons in small corridors or blocking too much and running out of stamina.

nowhere near as impossible as some made it out to be

agreed, if you just payed attention and took your time, it was fine.

If you tried to run through it like superman, I could see where you would have trouble.

It's an open world format though. If it didn't have checkpoints, you'd have to play the entire game in one sitting. :O

Of course, I'm presuming that you aren't able to save the game at will, which I get the feeling you won't able to do, as that would make the game easier, rather than harder.
Peace.

Clamedeus
Clamedeus

I think it would make it easier if you could save anywhere Lawless, I bet it's going to be like Demon's Souls, but they have checkpoints where you can put the Beacon down (if you can put it down anywhere, i think you can) and you will go to that spot until you can pass through and get to the save area.

But i don't know how it's going to be but that's just a guess. I still don't know how the Beacon will be used and how many times you can use it, or how the mechanics will be.

Seems most games are going the autosave route these days.

That'd be good I think. Provided the beacon IS limited use, or could only be used in certain zones to keep people from abusing it.

WorldEndsWithMe

Checkpoints weren't my issue, I just hate a stilted experience. If I die it better be because I screwed up, not because I need to learn a noisome pattern to continue on.

Clamedeus
Clamedeus

It can be both, you messed up, or it could be a pattern. The bosses usually have a pattern, but you have to worry about what you do running and walking around in the game from traps etc.

But if it's not your bag, i respect that as well.

It doesn't have checkpoints at will. Beacons are scattered about the world by developers and it's your checkpoint when you find one. No different to the checkpoints on Demons Souls.

World, C'mon. My bro has got a kid, full time job and is 39 and conquered Demons Souls and hailed it as the best RPG of the gen. You got no excuse on a FRESH and skillful way of playing a genius game.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

Bought it, got nowhere in 3 days, sold it. I make no apologies. The payoff wasn't worth the effort. I had to ask myself "Why am I still playing this?" a lot of times. I just don't need the perceived accolades for gamer skill by being able to tell people who bemoan the difficulty that I whooped the game and hey I didn't think it was that hard even. That does nothing for me.

Lotusflow3r
Lotusflow3r

It really isn't that hard though. People forget about the Blue Phantom aid or just simply rush it.

Call an aid at every boss and you'll have a 90% chance at winning. Study the level, same thing. It was fair and well developed. I had no trouble when i figured it out.

Well, does criticising a beloved game do it for you instead? 😛

BTNwarrior
BTNwarrior

well in a sense isn't every game driven by a mistake mechanic. Like I'm sure that if you ran into a room filled with bad guys in COD trying to stab all of them you would die and say to yourself "that was a mistake I won't do that again" or if your playing final fantasy and you go after a boss without any healers in your party and you die I'm sure you will recognise your mistake and do it again the other way. Hell even in god of war when you are going in to rip out a cyclops eye and it says press "O" but you accidently press "X" is that not a mistake? There is nothing different about Demons Souls. If you run into a room hoping to quickly stab everyone you might just die because of your rush tacktics. If you go after a boss without the proper healing potions you might not survive that fight. The only thing that is different in demons souls from other games is that it makes you spawn at the beggining of the world after you die. However most shortcuts and other things you have done to make the world more easy to traverse still remain

I will clear this up for you demon souls is longer than an hour by far……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….! Actaully to be honest i have played that game for 100 plus hours. So i dont know what you consider a bang for your buck, but i am pretty sure games are not going to give you it, if demon souls didn't.
