Snipers. They aren't necessarily the same thing as campers, but they can be equally annoying.

And when it comes to Splash Damage's colorful and brutally entertaining Brink , it seems those snipers will be left out in the cold. The game just isn't designed for them, so say the developers. In speaking to GameArena , creative director Richard Ham says their game doesn't "accommodate" snipers, because they want to insure that everyone has a "good time." Said Ham:

"Brink effectively does not do a very good job of supporting that type of gameplay. So if those type of players want to just sit on the Grassy Knoll all game long getting one hit kills they're going to find themselves just a little bit frustrated with Brink, but that's so we can make sure everyone else has a good time, so seven out of eight people have a great experience instead of just one out of eight."

You can always add scopes to many different guns in Brink but considering the map design and various match objectives, it seems that snipers won't be able to rule the roost from afar. We're wondering what the multiplayer aficionados have to think about this…preferably, we'd like to hear from those who aren't always snipers. 😉

Hrm, sorry to say but I am generally always a sniper. I just like that type of game play. Looks like I'll still be taking a pass on this one

That's cool that they want to make an equal experience, but uh…

"but that's so we can make sure everyone else has a good time, so seven out of eight people have a great experience instead of just one out of eight."

Now… I'm not sure how terrible these guys are at games, but I've NEVER experienced a sniper being the only person to do well in a game… As far as I'm concerned, they're a great tool for keeping certain areas of a map suppressed and confined, but uh…

I'm sorry… but if you keep running out in the open where a sniper is tracking… it's your own stupidity that gives him killstreak upon killstreak. I dunno… gameplay sounds good and all, but I think the excuse is just a cop-out. I'd like to hear them support their position a little stronger next time.

EDIT: On a further note, the easiest thing to do if you don't want snipers ruling your game, is to design more complext maps where every player could potentially excel. lol… you have to laugh at these guys a little… When do lone snipers ever completely rule a game so it's only 1 out of 8 enjoying themselves? Maybe these players should develop a strategy. It isn't hard.

Great points man.

I for one find the thrill of the hunt to be great…both as a sniper and as the potential victim. When you're NOT the sniper, I don't think there's a bigger kill than counter-stalking a sniper and actually killing them. Especially when they are cloaked in KZ3 and think they're hidden and you just lay into them with your machine gun…..you know they're pissed on the other side…

Like you said, snipers have their place. If you don't like them camping…then go kill them…it's that easy.

And it is fun to be a sniper

I agree with what you said about map design, I mean BC2 has several maps that support close and long range gameplay. Or they could just design a few maps that are friendly to snipers and a few that are close range. This just seems to be limiting variety in gameplay.

So, basically, they want to make the game a total run'n'gun kind of game? I mean, without the sniper, or at least the ability to stop, aim and take down an opponent with a single well placed shot, what are you left with except charging in all guns blazing…?

I still think people will use the sniper rifle, and camp or rush with it, other games had a disadvantage using a sniper rifle but it never stopped anyone.

Sniping is boring… I say if people want to snipe, let them. In general, 99% of the snipers out there are the biggest bums in the game and pose no real threat to anyone. They can definitely be annoying, but if they want to sit around and be bored more power to them. Not too smart to alienate a group of gamers. Not if you're looking to make a profit in the fps world anyways.

I guess you haven't seen how capable someone is of using a sniper rifle in games, trust me they can be more deadly then an assault rifle if in use of a good player.

I've seen some devastating games with a guy just running around with a sniper rifle and killing everyone, it's freakin' crazy the skills some of these players have with a sniper rifle.

Trust me, I have played way too many hours of Bad Company 2, 1943, MW2, and others to know that the amount of dangerous snipers is very very low. I have 500+ hrs. in BC2 alone and can count on one hand how many snipers actually made a difference in a round of conquest. I am well aware how deadly a red dotted sniper rifle can be up close. That is how I got all of my sniper pins and insignias in BC2 because sitting on a hill sniping is so boring I could never have done it that way. You are giving snipers way too much credit.
I absolutely agree with the guy below that said most people that say they snipe are just covering up for the fact they are no skill campers. Battlefield games are all about capturing territory, be it rush or conquest. How in the world are you going to capture territory with half your team sitting at your deployment? I love playing against teams with lots of snipers…easy victories.

Clamedeus

I only give credit to where credit is due. And yes some aren't very good at sniping, and rushing with assault rifles, but I'm talking about the ones who are good and yes you will get a lot that isn't.

I love sniping because it's fun picking people off across from the other side of the map and figure out where they will be, and how they will kill you, that is the joy i get in trying to out smart someone in an FPS. I am also fully capable of rushing with assault weapons contrary to what people believe in people being a sniper class.

But don't let that fool you because a person is using a sniper rifle they don't have skill, that will be the mistake you make in underestimating someones skill.

i'm a pretty good sniper i'd say. when i played cod 4 i would head shot moving players alot. in modern warfare 2, i put a red dot on a 50 cal to snipe long distances and use it like an automatic assault rifle, no turbo controller at all. kinda pissed at black ops though because the fal keeps jamming on me. I shoot down parachutes in MAG no problem, snipe clear across the map on bad company 2. as one guy puts its below, there are snipers and there are those with sniper rifles. unfortunately or fortunately, depending how you look at it, guys running around with sniper rifles completely outnumber snipers.

Having heavily played all the notable FPSes out there (Killzone2/3, CoD, MAG, Resistance, etc), I have to say, I have a total hate-on for snipers. lol
However, for the most part, having them don't necessarily ruin the game.
For example, MAG is still super enjoyable, despite there being many snipers in many of the games. In fact, I barely notice they are even around. (except when they pick you off as you're parachuting)
Otherwise, you just adjust your gameplay and don't sit out exposed in the open.

what pisses me off in mag is that some people just dont listen and some even try to boot you as squad leader. i mean i even try to put markers where i want them to approach from but they get mad because i took the double xp marker away from the objective.

I have high hopes for this game, Splash Damage understand multi-player, this may help the balance and make for a more frantic, enjoyable game. Most snipers need a rocket up their ass anyway, too many people use sniping as an excuse for being nothing more than a dirty camper.

hahaha, and battlefield maps are practically snipers heaven because of how open it was. i remember sniping from on top of a mountain all the way to the final rush base on that desert like map by the water, i think it was nelson bay. was bored after we captured the first rush base so i just stayed on top the mountain and sniped my way to first place.

Uhh….Sniping is the only thing that ever makes me play an online shooter. It's called team work.

This is why the only online shooter i play is MAG. It's all about team work. I and my team of snipers pick em off and the hands on people get through better. I have maximum patience and play better when relaxed…and sniping is relaxing and kinda hypnotic, it's my role.

Definitely passing on this.

Snipers… good to have on your team.

Campers? Who cares. Only morons feed them kills. I have never been bothered by campers. IMO, although it's frustrating to have a camper on your team who does nothing to help an objective, they have NEVER bothered me when on other teams.

Seriously? What kind of person feeds a camper kills? Just avoid that area or frag the crap out of them! Let them get bored in some obscure area of the map. If they're "camping" an area they are supposed to defend… guess what? It's not camping. It's defence. Figure it out.

Do I camp? Well, if I see an enemy on radar about to come around a corner I happen to be close to, I'll move away from the door and wait for them to come through, then be on my merry way, but I don't think that's camping if I then get up and go somewhere else.

I dunno… all these people who yell at campers are usually more annoying than the campers themselves. There is -NO- good reason why a camper should get more than 4 or 5 kills a match. If they do, then either you or your teammates aren't brilliant enough to figure out how to avoid those deaths. And chances are, you deserve to lose.

"who does nothing to help an objective,"

Seriously. My biggest gripe about Killzone 3 is too many idiots don't help to complete the objective in Warzone. Rather they camp and hide and try only to rack up kills. No team work from those turds.

FM23
FM23

Your not a camper then. Campers are people who wait in corners, by enemy spawn points, enemy base entrances, etc through the whole game. Campers don't get a extra 5 kills a match, they get 15+ and no points towards objectives. I hate campers, they ruin games. Snipers are no different. They flavor to matches, but if they are watching spawn points (Pyrrhus Crater) waiting for kills, life of KZ3 become annoying.

@jawknee – that's why my K/D ratio blows, but I still end up high in the rankings. Last night I had 22 kills and 37 deaths, but was #1 on the team cause all I do is complete objectives since that's how you WIN in warzone!

When the medic on your team has:
Most C&H points,
Most Speaker retrieves,
Most Speaker carrier kills,
Most Charges planted,
Most Charges defused,
Most Assists, etc…

then something is wrong with your team
AKA – you don't have a team….you have a bunch of lumps shooting each other…

Jawknee
Jawknee

Goodness, the other night I was playing Warzone and it was time for the objective where you grab the loud speaker and place it in the enemy territory. My team just kept shooting everyone and never ONCE tried to grab the speaker and take it to the enemy side. At least 4 or 5 times I watched as my team would kill the guy with the speaker only to leave it where it fell for another enemy to come pick it up. I was the only one stopping them from scoring. It can be pretty infuriating when you get stuck with a bunch of worthless turds. It also annoys me when I am the only one on the team repairing the ammo crates, wasps and minigun turrets. Morons!

I'll be the first to admit, that I move my sniping positions to where the traffic is. If I nail you more then once in the same spawn, then the phrase..

"If it happens once, shame on you. If it happens twice, shame on me"

..comes to mind.

Say that to yourself as I shoot you for 2nd, 3rd, 4th time.

I dislike snipers, they're usually very close to campers. I played this game of cod once, where there were 6 players total and I was the only one moving… the rest was just sitting in some unreachable place shooting the only moving thing on the map, me… and when you know where one is, you walk there and get shot by another -_-
Though in Brink i don't think campers would pose much of a threat, because of the emphasis on the mobility of the player, which I'm looking forward to, freerunning in an fps,
definitely gonna pick this one up.
