Resistance 3 Multiplayer Detailed, Beta Test Confirmed

While we're relatively certain the single-player campaign will be great, shooter fans always need a fantastic multiplayer option.

And we should get exactly that when Resistance 3 drops on September 6. The multiplayer has been detailed at the PlayStation Blog : it'll feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatches and "objective-based modes set in locations across the globe." Now, you may remember that R2 boasted 60-player online insanity, so perhaps you consider this a downgrade. However, Insomniac's Senior Community Manager, James Stevenson, had this to say on that subject:

"Rest assured though, our biggest motivation in determining our new player count was the fun times that we and the community had on maps like RFOM’s Busyard and Rooftops, as well as the Bayou House and San Francisco maps in Resistance 2."

Plus, he goes on to talk about "a very deep and customizable progression system;" players will be able to spend earned experience points to customize loadouts, and he adds that the team "learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team…" We'll be able to select and increase various support abilities like Bubble Shield, Ammo Beacon and Radar Beacon, and there are even tactical abilities that can be used to your advantage. Doppleganger ought to be useful.

Perhaps best of all is the announcement that a multiplayer beta – another must for shooters this generation – will be ready to go later this year. Not sure about you, but this is near the top of my priority list for 2011.

Sounds awesome, and that doppleganger sounds like a pretty sweet feature for scouting out the enemies camping anywhere. It's definitely a top priority on my list as well, can't wait. To this day the MP on Resistance Retribution has been the game with the most hours spent on a MP, well over 8 days worth of online time currently, such a fun game and this is for a PSP game of all things, ridiculous I know. But after all it was fun, simple, and easy lobbies was a great thing.

So no online co-op? That sucks. Although I prefer local campaign co-op, the online co-op of R2 is one of the few titles that I played online extensively.

Nothing better than a friend next to you in local co-op.

Although I do miss my days of facing down Cyber Demons in Doom 2 with a friend over the modem. (Don't pick up the phone, Mom!)

Glad they are going to 16 player. 60 was too much in R2. Resistance:FoM is to this day my favorite mp game. It was set up perfect. And to me when they added 60 player games, it took away the fun. Made it hectic ad insane but not as fun. I know a few who enjoyed the 60 players and it wasn't a ba idea, I just compare it to the first game and wonder why they changed it that drastically!?!?

But for me I'm more into the SP for this game. Hope it's as long as the other two! I need a lengthy shooter! Can't wait!

O and btw I seen a mp gameplay video for R3 over at g4. You should check it out, it looks very good! Only shows one map and a few weapons but classic Resistance. Very pleasing for fans, I think!

16 player may not be considered a downgrade, but certainly a downsizing. Sounds sweet though, I wonder if any of those perks will be available during the single player. That'd be really cool.

This is behind only iF2 and UC3 on my want list for this year. Fall of Man… such a great game to introduce me to modern console gaming. I have the fondest of memories, and I hope that this will live up to it, as R2 just seemed unable to do so in my mind.
Peace.

Sorry to break it to you, but nope. It's only campaign co-op online and offline though.

This will be the one and ONLY time I will agree with you.

I loved R2's CO-OP, got all the intel….and I really wish it was in the new installment. Played Deathmatch for about 30 minutes and never picked it up again.

Can't wait for this game to come out. It might actually be better then KZ3. Damn 60 players for R2, I got this game back in the day when I didn't even play MP games…borrowed it from a friend just to play the campaign which was real satisfying. Still need to get my own copy for my collection.

Being another FPS I'm not hyped for this, earliest I'd get this would be mid 2012.

Sounds interesting but I've got to see what this MP is talking about first. Just from the details I've read, I'm disappointed to be honest. They took away the online co-op from R2 that almost everybody loved. I put a lot of hours into that.

The competitive matches were perfectly set up as well. Each game mode had a set number of players unless you had a custom game going.

Hopefully I can get into the beta when they decide to drop it. I'm anticipating the campaign for this more then the MP..

i'm getting this no matter what, online campaign co op FTW!!!
Is it 16 player teams or 8 player teams?
i'd be ok with 8 player teams if it had split screen online competitive multiplayer otherwise 16 player is definitely a downgrade.
32 player games are a standard for PS exclusives shooters i would think!

Going from 60 players down to 16 may seem like a downgrade, as is 32 players to 24 players in Killzone 3.

However, I think all FPS devs are looking at the #1 spot (currently owned by CoD), and see that 12 player matches are fine, and no one is exactly begging for 24 or more players in multiplayer.

Reducing the number of players will allow for more flexibility to increase framerates and effects, which we can still benefit from, as gamers.

I think this game is going to surprise a lot of ppl in a good way. I can't wait to play this one. R1 and R2 was epic and great, respectively.

Well this is sorta a downer, I was hoping they would pull a MAG and make it a larger competitive game. Oh well still can't wait.
