Battlefield has always been a great-looking series on both PC and consoles, and just because Battlefield 3 uses the fancy new Frostbite 2 engine doesn't mean any particular fanbase is going to suffer.
DICE Art Director Gustav Tilleby spoke during EA's press event at GDC, and ended up telling X360 magazine (as noted by NowGamer ) that their Frostbite 2.0 engine allows them to be "a step beyond" their competitors." That much is obvious from the first few pieces of footage we've seen, but as those were rendered on high-end PCs, some were wondering if console gamers would get a slightly inferior version this time around. But nobody has to worry, says Tilleby:
"The positive thing is that the new rendering technique allows us to do more complex calculations at no extra cost. That’s the magic. The game will look very good, even on 360."
That last bit is going to prompt even more speculation; the gossip-hungry forums during GDC might want to interpret it two ways: 1. the 360 is less powerful (which of course it is, but most developers don't mention it specifically), and/or 2. for some reason, the PS3 version might actually be better than the 360 version. But we aren't going to read anything into that comment; the bottom line is that Battlefield 3 should look amazing, regardless of platform.

Interesting, I want to read in detail what this new magical technique is all about.
Hopefully, whatever the technique is, it's something that can be shared with other developers so all games can have the benefits.
exactly and then the quality of mainstream games will rise to the point at which people realise cod is good-ish at best in comparison.
Played the Black Ops demo last night. What the hell are people smoking? The game plays and looks terrible. Especially after playing Killzone 3 for the past week. Just don't understand it. I know people who played Killzone 3 and went "meh" only to turn back to Black Ops.
Insanity.

I haven't got a chance to try it yet, but I did notice the psn rating on it was only 2.something and I was wondering, if it's that low, who are these millions of people buying it.
Never underestimate the ability of the mainstream to have no mind of their own.
I also tried the Black OPs demos and did a quick comparison between 360 and PS3. There's a relatively significant difference between the two. Without a doubt the 360 version boasts a clearer more higher resolution picture. Including also much improved snow weather effects and more stable frame rate–gotta love that 60fps smoothness.
If I was a CoD fan I'd have a hard time settling on the PS3 version as it's noticeably a notch below it's competitor.
"The game will look very good, even on 360.", lol..
Looking forward for this one.

yes, another battlefield game, this going to be freakin awesome.
So, should we take this as "Battlefield 3 will be optimized for the 360, thus meaning the PS3 version will not be up to it's potential."
Sounds about right to me.
I'm tempted to get this on PC if that's the case. Sick of games getting dumbed down in the name of "fairness".
PC supports 64 players too, I'll be preordering for PC, it'll be cheaper too, theres no way I can stick to 24 player servers for this baby.
"The game will look very good, even on 360."
OUCH! That's gonna leave a mark on the Bots.
hah, it should but it won't.
They will read it as "they mentioned us! yay! we're the favourites!"
haha, so true
i find it to be a slap in the face that the ps3 version isn't even mentioned. that qoute is just another example of the xbox centric nature of multi plat developers. they always speak of the 360 version. when they debut a game or show off their games it's always on the 360.
that awesome skyrim footage was all 360 footage with no mention of the ps3. crysis2 360 gets a sp demo. march 1st they get a mp demo, and we get promises of a demo coming later. ps3 is always back of the bus so to speak
it is a real stretch to take that quote as a compliment to the ps3. i can think of only a few mult plats that have come out better on the ps3. i have little faith in developer talk when they don't showcase the game with ps3 footage, or let alone mention the ps3.

Well to be fair Excelsior, he was talking to X360 magazine, so I don't think he was going to mention "PS3" at anytime in that interview.
Although I agree with a lot of the other stuff you said.
@jawkee
not really. i'd say that it wont make a difference because it is more complex than COD. therefore they wont pay attention to it since modern warfare 3 is coming out in the fall. they can try to delay the announcement all they want but they'll release the new COD finished or not.
Had to do a double take, not often to see a dev slap the xbots so hard.
Hope it looks just as awesome on the PS3 as it will on the PC. I can't wait!!!
Why no mention of the PS3 version? Just cuz it's in their magazine? Call me paranoid but I fear it will get the bad port for some reason. Now why would I think that?

Nah, if anything they will be equal. DICE seems to do a good job. Bad Company 2 looked fine on both platforms.
i share your fear. it's hard to be optmistic when in all the multi plat footage is shown with the developers always having a 360 controller in their hand.
I dont think Bad Company 2 had PC as the lead platform though, and we all know 360 gets better pc ports.
My dream for this game is that the ps3 should be closer in comparison to the PC than the 360 would. I'm tired of developers of having to make 360 and ps3 versions look identical, because the reality is that they're not identical consoles. Talk about holding the industry back.
Well said my friend, well said.
360 is killing all the Ps3 users… Fact.
Early DLC
Games dumming down
just 2 facts that kill Ps3. Ps3 can take all Xbox's little games and upscale them to perfection.
I wouldn't say it's "killing PS3 users." Irking them? Certainly.
I pre-ordered this today after watching the gameplay video. The graphics are uncomparable to any other game I have ever seen. They're just… incredible. Plus when you pre-order, you get upgraded up to a Limited Edition for free (being an EA game and all). I'm just curious to whether EA will go one step further for all the PS3 owners out there. They have been rather generous lately (Frontline HD on Medal of Honor, Extraction on Dead Space 2, exclusive Tetris and other PSN titles, etc.).
Umm…they're good but not that good. PS3 exclusives are still way ahead. The video footage you watched is likely the PC version. The console versions likely won't look that good. EA seems to have a habit of showing off great looking footage while the game actually doesn't look that good(cough*Medal of Honor*cough). Take a look at the screen shots. They do not look as good as that video footage.

upgrading to limited edition seems like all crap to me. they'll probably do what they did with bad company 2 and medal of honor. they'll release only limited editions when the game releases. i believe they did that with dead space 2. its probably what EA doing with every game release they have. I dont even remember a non limited edition bad company 2 other than the rerelease of the ultimate edition.
I'm glad when it comes to PC games I stick with the PC and for console games I stick with a console. Makes life easier.
I gotta say, why is everyone so worried about a bad port? If anything, I think we'll receive the best version of the game. Electronic Arts have been CRAZY good to all us PS3 owners this generation. If this was a Call of Duty, yeah, I'd be worried. Activision is tucked away nicely into Microsoft's pocket, after all. This is Battlefield, though… from EA and Dice… THIS WILL ROCK!!! ; )
ps3 owners have been burned so many times with mult plats. that's why. a lot of ea's titles still look better on the 360. ea did that crappy orange box port, too. i know that was early in this gen, and ea has been great to sony. things are better now, and me2 looked better on the ps3.
the bad ports are hard to get over, though. just when you think we're out the woods a bad ps3 port will drop. remember bayo from about this time last year?
btw guys i got kz3 yesterday and it looks amazing!! my psn id is jamiecolts if you guys want to look me up.

I'm agreeing with you, tridon. The game looks ridiculous, better than Killzone 3 and way better than any CoD. You guys should spend less time bickering over ports, etc and do yourself a favor and actually watch the demo they showed.
In regard to the quote, I think he was saying "even on 360" as compared to the PC, as that was platform the demo was running off of as well as being the "lead platform" for the series.
"better than Killzone 3"
O.o
For Battlefield 3, it'd be wise to get the PC version as it's the lead platform and feature 64 multiplayer as opposed to console's 24 multiplayer.
Ben, I don't know what to say about it other than if it is not a proprietary engine, how can the PS3 be used to its full potential. Could Battlefield 3 look better than Killzone 3… I think it is a hard one to push.
I mean Guerilla have had to use some very interesting SPU techniques in order to offload the relatively weak RSX, using the CELL SPU's to assist in calculating the anti-aliasing algorithms and some of the post processing work, such as the full screen focus pulling effects etc.
Surely a multi-plat engine will struggle with this unless DICE have done engine "tweaks" for each respective platform. Time will tell… I know one thing… it will be a day 1 purchase!
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
I just did a preview for Battlefield 3 and i must say it even has me intrigued and i dont dig military shooters.
Doesn`t matter which version looks better to me, it`s the framerate which matters the most. I hope DICE gets thie one on bulleye for the ps3. I seen a comparison between xbox 360 and ps3 version and I will admit the 360 version looks slightly better, and a bit more crisp^, while the ps3 version had jagged edges on the outlines of most the chracters and weapons. The anti aliasing in the ps3 is very poor and has been pointed out in techno buffalo`s CONSOLE WARS. I know the ps3 won which is exactly what i wanted, but really there are a lot of problems that the ps3 still has that can be fixed.
How have you been able to compare the PS3 version and 360 version when they have only released 2 videos where neither platform is mentioned in either trailer?
Sorry Jawk, I meant to say Bad Company 2, as sometimes my head thinks faster then I can type. Sorry for the confusion.
Gotcha.
Wish the console version had 64 players.
64 would be very nice, but think about resistance 2 that was one big mess!!! But a very fun mess. I hope bad company two will be great on ps3!!!
Will be picking up the PC version since DICE has already stated that the PC version will receive extra attention.
as long as the console versions look like BC2 then i wont be complaining!
nice to see a developer actually taking the time to put extra time and effort and content into the PC version!
crytek, are you listening?
After seeing that teaser trailer a week ago, I am pumped for this game.
Yeah, like we haven't heard that before…
