What, you didn't see this coming?
According to Variety , Screen Gems has purchased the rights to make a movie based on Capcom's popular action franchise, Devil May Cry . Kyle Ward will be on hand to pen the script. If you weren't aware, DMC was originally developed as the third entry in the Resident Evil series but the game design just strayed way too far from the RE formula, so they released it as a new IP. To date, the DMC games have sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Screen Gems already did a bunch of movies based on the long-running RE series; the films raked in over $580 million in worldwide grosses. None of them got great reviews from critics but hey, nobody ever said movies had to be smart to make a lot of money. We'll have to see what sort of storyline comes out of this DMC film; we wonder if they'll follow the original plot, or if they'll produce something entirely different.
Either way, you can bet all Dante fans will remain very skeptical. Personally, I just want to see a DMC5 announcement.
I don't see how this will work… RE I understand but this…
They will make David O. Russell the director, who will appoint Jason Statham as Dante and Halle Berry as Trish. They will be members of a crime family (like the Sopranos) using a detective agency as a front for their operations focusing on the illegal acquisition of religious artifacts. However, when Jason (Dante) steals a particularly nasty sword, it possesses him and forces him to commit a number of unpleasant atrocities, ultimately culminating in him murdering Halle (Trish), which results in him forcing the demon out of his body for a final showdown in an oil pit.
Just an educated guess.
*is bitter*
please, at least if you make this movie, don't kill my love toward this game, please ! put an actor that ressembles dante and that is as badass as him !!
You just want to see a DMC5 announcement. That sounds so sad considering DmC. Y'know, I'd actually probably see this. I rather enjoyed the original Resident Evil film, and Underworld (a series that I like a lot) was also produced by Screen Gems.
Maybe they'll be adapting it from DmC, or perhaps it'll work as a bridge between it and DMC3, if it isn't fully explained in the game. I daresay that the focus will be on the action, but that's what the series is about anyway.
Peace.

They ran the games into the ground so maybe now Hollywood will carry the torch from there.
What do you mean maybe?
I legit sighed when i saw this article
Havnt they already announced the DMC reboot?
yeah they did announce DmC, which is why ben wants them to just announce DMC 5 already
yeah they did announce DmC, which is why ben wants them to just announce DMC 5 already
That doesnt make sense, why would they announce a DMC5 if they have already announced the DmC reboot?
Variety says that Dante's gonna avenge his mother's murder by…killing demons.
How many bad video games can one company make? Well it seems as though Screen Gems intends to find out.
man I meant video game movies, ugh.
"If you weren't aware, DMC was originally developed as the third entry in the Resident Evil series but the game design just strayed way too far from the RE formula, so they released it as a new IP"
^^^ No, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was always suppose to be the third game.
The game you're thinking about is actually Resident Evil 4.
About this news story… I have no words.
Actually you're incorrect. After RE:2 on PSOne they started tooling around with a new installment which, as Ben said, ended up getting scrapped for RE series and turned into Devil May Cry..I still have the Gamepro from '98 with pictures of Dante shown in the RE world with a shotgun and no red coat.
you are correct. devil may cry came from developement in last gen consoles, not the third entry. the third entry was on ps1. the develoers were trying to make a new re game on last gens consoles and encountered a game mechanic where the enemies would fly up in the air. you could shoot the enemies in the air. that's where dmc came from.
dmc was one of early ps2 games, and was pretty awesome.
i have enjoyed the re movies from screen gems. alice is freaking hot. the 1st one was cluastraphobic, and had a great sountrack. loved the pull back at the end where alice wanders into the decimatated streets of racoon city. the second one was more action orientated and featured nemisis, jill valentine, and a street battle taken straight from the game. the third was out in the desert. it had the crows, and the tyrant. the fourth entry really opened thing up. the executioner from re5 was in it. that battle was kick ass. wesker, and chris redfield were in it. the battle with wesker was taken straight from re5. loved the sequence where all the alice clones attack umbrella hq. all of the movies have had the zombie dog, too.
anyways, i think the movies have been pretty faithful to the games. they seemed to have influenced each other. the laser corridor sequence in re4 was taken straaight from the 1st re movie.

@slugga_status
Well its like this…
Capcom's Kamiya and Shinji Mikami started development of RE4 in 1999. Which happens to be the same year THE THIRD Resident Evil game came out on the PS1.
RE3 was developed to wrap-up the Raccoon City storyline. That was confirmed by the director of that game. And that's why RE3 was also known as "Jill's last escape" by the team.
Now, the Resident Evil game that became Devil May Cry was actually the very first version of RE4.
It is well documented that Shinji Mikami was the one that convinced his team and Capcom higher-ups to turn that 1st version of RE4 into another IP. This was because the game they were making at that time, had a different vibe & feel to it. The enemies were too different from the previous RE games.
Eventually, Capcom accepted Mikami's request and that's how DMC came to be. The new IP was released in 2001. While development of an alternate version of RE4 continued that same year.
So what I said in my previous post was correct.
you are correct. dmc originated from re4. not the third title. it annoys when sites or magazines cite history, and get it wrong. psm said parasite 2 was a ps2 title recently. wrong. ps1 game.
they corrected it the following month though.
yes, both your posts are correct. slugga status is wrong. rthe third entry was always wrap up jill's storyline. the game mechanic of dmc originated from re4, the fourth title. at least that's what its creator said.

I can see the movie now. Fruity emo, wannabe twlight vampire, Dante on a quest to avenge his mother's killers.
I hope that I am wrong and its the Dante of the original DMC with the storyline close to the first but right now its sounding like an origin type of movie which means Ninja theory's Dante.
Typo before anyone notices : avenge his mother, not his mother's killers. Lol.
*facepalm*
** Facepalms Chaos Theory X**
Sometimes one isn't enough.
facepalming someone else is a slap.
I bet somewhere in all those 1 and 0's Dante is facepalming right now.
Worldwide facepalm.
Maybe all the game studios should get together and do what Marvel did and make their own studio, that way they can maintain complete creative control over their properties (if that's how the "biz" works.
also, no disrespect was meant Chaos.
😀
There is also a plans for a Mass Effect movie
http://social.bioware.com/forum/Mass-Effect/Mass-Effect-News-and-Announcements/Mass-Effect-Movie-announced-2717410-1.html
****ing brilliant, never seen a company trying to milk a franchise after the creator has left.
o wait, hi there final fantasy
capcom thinks the can turn DMC around w/o kamiya, this is just gonna turn into another dragon ball
Some how I doubt it would be that bad even in the worst case scenario.
I enjoyed the DMC anime and the first couple RE films, maybe they can make it into a fun action flick or something, what, I'm just thinking positive…
Another reason to dislike Capcom's decisions with this franchise. Oh well, what's the worst that could happen?
Paul Anderson? or Uwe Boll?
Lol, argh no!! Don't mention them. *runs away in fear* You know I wouldn't be surprised if they picked Paul W.S. Anderson. I guess he's the better of the worst, though still just as bad. I just can't see this movie going down well at all.
In all fairness to Anderson, I loved Event Horizon. And Boll just put out a movie called Rampage that was pretty… interesting. So I guess you can say they are ok as long as they stay away from the video games
oh lord here we go again!
crapcom, what are you not going to sell out!
poor dante!
oh well, at least we know what the next south park episode will be based on.
😉
Indy anyone?
I don't remember much about Devil May Cry except that it has insanely unfilmable action.
A more recent for instance: the animated sequences from Marvel vs. Capcom 3. First, the gun battle between Dante and Deadpool. You can't do that as liveaction and make it seam plausible. Second, Trish going motorcycle surfing while dumping Call of Duty multiplayer amounts of ammunition into Doctor Doom. Motorcycle surfing in liveaction = :@
If the live action Akira wasn't bad enough.
Why does everything have to be "legitimized" by having a live action movie based on it?
Can't say i like the idea of this, i can alread ysee thsi being over the top and very emo. I want to hear more on the Silent Hill sequel, The Silent Hill film is so far the only game-movie adaption i can appreciate.
there is going to be a sh2. the director ended up in prison for tax evasion, but he's out now. i loved the sh movie.
I'm going to laugh if the movie actually isn't that bad and it becomes a hit like Resident Evil. Which I liked very much up until the fourth one. They really shouldn't make a fifth. It is starting to feel a little dried out.
each re movie has made more money than the previous, so a 5th seems innevitable. i like the series, and don't think it's dried up. the fourth ended with all of umbrella's osprey like vehicles descending on the heros. it's set up for a sequel.
Those resident evil movies were God awful, even from a non-fanboy POV. Way too many plot holes, and too much filler and just so many questions and inconsistencies.
If I were running a movie studio, I would flatout refuse to invest in a video game related film out of the fact that history have shown them to be very unprofitable, this compared to book or comic adaptation which in turn are profitable most of the time.
With that mind I just find it stupid from a economic POV for any movie studio to seriously invest in a video game related property.
there have ben a lot of profitable game based movies. the re series was a hit. tombriader and sh2 both were profitable. most movies in hollywood don't make money, so disagree that game based movies are the problem. i do agree that there have been some god awful ones. alone in the dark, and street fighter come to mind.
all of re movies have been profitable. re had a budget of 37 million, and grossed 108 million in worldwide sales. re afterlife had a budget of 57 million and brought in 296 million worldwide sales. seems like a good investment to me.

Not a big fan of "games into movies"..Ever since I was a kid I always ended up disappointed b/c the movie rarely followed the storyline of the games. I think that's why these adaptions fail. You say you're making a movie based on a game but when it comes out it's far from it. Some are tolerable while some are downright horrendous.
Just as long as he has silver hair everything will be alright 😉
I see them making it like the RE movies. Create a new female character that was never in any of the games and make Dante a supporting character. Or they could just make all about Lady.
To be fair there were at least female protagonists in RE. I don't think Dante will get the shaft in the movie. Well, at least the fact that he will be the lead.
I DO think that his cockiness won't even be amusing though. Hollywood can't do cockiness like game writers can.
Well you know what well just have to wait & see I honestly don't mind which Dante they use whether it be white hair Dante or Ninja Theory's version of him, which seems to be more adaptable approach to the big screen.
Just as long as the movie doesn't completely suck and show at least some potential, then I'm cool. That reminds me wasn't they supposed to be doing an Onimusha movie staring Takeshi Kaneshiro the voice acter from the previous 2 games. I'd rather see Onimusha before DMC movie.

I meant to say the very 1st two onimusha games.
