When discussing Crysis 2 , PlayStation 3 owners have been asking the same question over and over: will we get an inferior PS3 version?

Well, developer Crytek has an answer: absolutely not. Executive producer Nathan Camarillo told GamerZines that Crysis 2 looks identical on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the only difference between the versions is the key prompts. When asked if the team had encountered problems with the PS3 (due to the fact that we haven't seen the PS3 in action yet), Camarillo's reply is as follows:

"No, not at all. It's all ready to go. It looks just like the 360 version. Other than the key prompts you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The PS3 version runs the same as 360; 30 frames a second and in 3D, you know, everything. I don't know why EA chose not to. I'm more than happy to show it."

We think we know why EA chose to show the Xbox 360 version. …we would too if we had a little extra cash in our hands. At any rate, we're just going to remain optimistic and trust Camarillo's words. We're excited to see Crysis 2 when it arrives on store shelves on March 25.

Well there's no reason to not believe them, but I've heard this argument before, and it turned out to be false *cough*Bayonetta*cough* *cough*Mafia II*cough*

For the record, it was Sega who made that claim; I don't think Platinum themselves said the games would be identical.

Not sure, though.

If memory serves, you are correct. I'm pretty sure it was Sega. But they still went ahead and made the claim anyway. I have more reason to trust Crytek.

The reason they went with the 360 version it's really simple:

The Xbox 360 is presently seen as the hardcore market leader by the industry. That's why they went with that version.

It's like last generation when they would show the PS2 version of a multiplatform game that came out for the Xbox and GameCube. The PS2 was the market leader and that's the version they would always promote more.

So I think EA was trying to be diplomatic with their response.

Admission they didn't use the PS3 to it's fullest potential as far as I am concerned.

True, but I just automatically assume that with any multi-plat game, unless they give good reason to assume otherwise.

My first thoughts exactly Jawknee when I saw that title for this article.

Is it a compliment to say a PS3 game is as good as the inferior console version? Okay, maybe in running speed, but graphics? I'm sorry, but what happened to Crytek's claim of optimising the game for each console? Didn't they say that the PS3 version would look and perform better than its 360 counterpart? And now they're saying it's going to look the same!!

As I said in the last Crysis 2 article, PC only for this game, and even then will wait for it to be half price. Still need to get through Crysis and C: Warhead.

Plus, Crytek are better PC developers. I think it's better that companies stick with what they know. Bungie can stick with Microsoft for all I care, as long as Sony has Naughty Dog.

Completely agree.

Its actually a truth.

Because if they used both machines to their 100%. Then the PS3 version would run better.

Thats a fact isnt it?

Because the PS3 has better specs than the 360, so if they used BOTH consoles full potential then that would mean that the PS3 version would run better, even slightly.

So yeah I agree, as far as im concerned if they really did use both consoles to their fullest, then they need to rethink their development strategy.

I don't know about yous guys but I don't want it to look the same as the 360 version, I want it to look better. And perform better, of course.

I agree. The ps3 should allow the same game as 360 at the very minimum, the ps3 is way more of a beast then it so yeah lets hope its at the very least the same. It is kinda rare for ps3 multiplats to end up better overall.

Btw since when can 360 do real 3d?

Jawknee

No clue. I thought 3D was only possible on 360 using the red and green glasses like people did in the 1950's when they used to watch movies about giants ants. LOL!

I think 360 has that poor tacked-on 3D you see in movies like Clash of the Titans. I'm sure Highlander could answer it but he's missing in action.

Dancemachine55

I'm guessing it'll be a pricey patch or something like that for 360 users.

Either that or the red and green glasses.

Wow, 360 is really starting to age badly right now. Not surprised if the next Xbox is only released to play catch up with PS3.

there using a new 3D mode they created themselves.
normally with 3D you render everything twice, then the display unpacks it and the glasses do their work.
tis why 3D effectively halfs the FPS because everything has to be done twice.
what crytek have done is effectively create something once then duplicate it kinda like copy and paste so everything is only done once, thus reducing the performance hit, and thus removing the bandwidth issues.
very impressive, in fact 3D only has a 1.2% performance hit according to crytek, not bad when considering all other 3D modes are more or less halving the frame rate!

But if it is the same on PS3 as it is on 360 then we ARE getting an inferior version. Inferior to what was possible. 😉

I don't really care much, but I am rather upset about Rage being retardified for 360. That game had promise.

Indeed it's very discouraging. I'm so sick of this. MS screwed gamers over in general this generation. No reason PS3 owners should get shafted in the name of "fairness".

MS went for the cheaper alternative. They slapped a larger RAM, better graphics card and wireless controller into the original Xbox and called it a day. And for that, PC and PS3 gamers everywhere must suffer.

If it weren't for Xbox Live and Halo, I seriously doubt the 360 would have survived at all.

Jawknee,

I’ve written this before, but I’ll reiterate it here.

Where was that sense of fairness last gen when every multiplat developer under the sun enhanced their PS2 games’ graphics when they ported them to the 360. Well, for the most part, because there were some exceptions.

Suddenly this gen it is equality for all… and a little M$ft cash too!

Also, for the life of me, I still don’t understand why the 360 gets so many exclusives (mostly shmups and adventure games… but still) in Japan. Could there be that many developers that are happy selling 4,000 copies of their games in Japan?

I don’t really care because I have a Japanese 360 (PS3 and Wii too), but I find it curious a Japanese-specific developer would choose the smaller market intentionally.

I guess M$ft must be really stuffing those developers’ pockets with Yen.

Orvisman, I wasn't even aware developers upped their game when it came to PS2 ports to the original Xbox. The only game I ever played on the original Xbox was the first Halo game when I wasn't playing Counterstrike for my FPS fix. The PS2 and Gamecube took care of the rest of my gaming needs.

MS has already said they will never adopt Blue Ray. I see them going all digital next gen.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

All digital is way too expensive, they will either have to make a proprietary disc (also expensive) or come up with some crazy compression and stick with DVD. Sticking with DVD would have the net benefit (to them) of holding back yet another generation of gaming in their favor.

godsman
godsman

It's already 250 gbs of harddrive this gen. I'm really confident it'll be over 1 terabyte hard drives for next gen.

Multi-platform games on average will probably be close to 15-20 gb next gen. So the next console can store 50-60 games. It makes sense is storage, they just need to solve the issue of internet speed.

Jawknee
Jawknee

If they stick with DVD, hopefully by the next gen, even 3rd party publishers are sick of the inferior format.

carl0975

Godsman – The hard drives in the xboxes aren't the problem, it's the amount of data the servers can store. There is currently somewhere around 800 games available on the 360, even if each game averaged about 6 gb of data, they would need 4.8 tb to store this gen's xbox games, which is quite a bit of space, especially since they'll obviously need the games on more than one server. I really can't see the next xbox going all digital, since it doesn't seem like it would be profitable enough for Microsoft(who knows though, they could always think that because it's worked so well with steam, it will work for them too.)

4.8 TB is quite large for an individual console or PC, but for a large scale server, it's quite small.

I will find out. Oh yes, I will find out indeed.

This is Crytek's moment to show us that their engine should be preferred to the UE3 when it comes to multi-plats. And judging from the Xbox LIVE demo, the graphics engine seems to be more than up to the task at trumping the UE3.

I'm optimistic for this game. Not so much for it being a tech showcase as it is being a game that's more my gameplay style.

Jawknee

If their goal is to encourage people to adopt their engine, I can support that. Anything at this point has got to be better than Unreal.

WorldEndsWithMe

A crackhead's urine sample would be a better game engine for multiplats than UE3.

while it may be better than UE3, what isn't, I still would hate to see devs continue this practice.

I hate that devs are taking an engine made for fps and using it for action adventure games, 3rd person shooters, rpgs, and everything else. It's just dumb.

Even if it was the best fps engine in the world it wouldn't matter. You can't use a ferrari for a school bus and you shouldn't use other people's left overs when trying to make a triple A title.

Unreal Engine 3 may be showing its age, but it isn't THAT bad.

I mean, Rocksteady certainly impressed with Batman A.A. Gears of War 3 looks pretty darn good. Sure, none can hold a candle to the awesomeness of Uncharted or Killzone, or even Heavy Rain for that matter! Least those games don't make everything look shiny and plastic like UE3.

Point is, sure UE3 has its flaws, but it's still awesome! Like Tiger Woods, showing his age, still the most popular name but there are better golfers out there winning tournaments right now. That's UE3 in a nutshell.

WorldEndsWithMe

UE3 can work in the right hands, but it ruins otherwise competent games in other's. AHEM Ninja Theory.

Jawknee

Saying Unreal is "awesome" is an over statement. Even when it's used properly is still produces ugly plastic, greasy looking games.

kraygen

I'm sorry dancemachine, but as well done as Batman AA was, batman still looked like a really good plastic action figure and he still walked like some kind of automaton or ape.

Personally it's about taking pride in their game to me. Yes it takes more time to do it yourself, but that's always better than using a generic start that was never intended for your purpose.

Well that's rather embarrassing for EA then. Here's the dev all proud of what he's made only to have EA decide, bah, let's just show the 360 version.

Looks bad Riccitiello, looks real bad.
