It was one of the better racing games of the PlayStation era, and you'll soon be able to relive the good ol' days.

Namco Bandai has announced that R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 will release next month as a PSOne Classic on the PlayStation Network. Playable on the PS3 and PSP, it may tide you over until we get more information on the recently revealed Ridge Racer Unbounded for next-gen consoles. The game won't be available until 2012, though, so that old-school fix better last a while. You may have forgotten but when it first launched in 1999, it garnered plenty of widespread critical acclaim and the unique story-driven Grand Prix mode was a huge draw. The game follows the path of a rookie driver, features 48 unique cars with over 300 variations spread across 4 car manufacturers, and customization for drifting and "grip-style racing." It was one of the most entertaining racers of last generation; we wonder how well it holds up over time.

I still remember the original Ridge Racer ; it was one of my favorite games of the early PlayStation days.

Now THIS is Ridge Racer! R4 is still my favourite Ridge Racer title and the only one I still own from the PS One days. I think I'll still buy it off the PS Store, though. It's that damn good! The new direction of RR is definitely disheartening for me but I'm going to hope for the best!

I wonder if we'll ever see old Acclaim titles released? Who was it that bought out Acclaim?

This is one of the few RR games I missed, regretfully, too. I knew it was supposed to be the best of the series, boasting 60fps (rare for PSX games) and it arguably has the best sound track. I'll be downloading this the day it arrives on PSN.

I enjoyed Rage Racer but can't recall if I ever bought R4.

I think I still have RR7 on the shelf at home

Yet he got promoted and was still doing/promoting ps related stuff years after that in the media.

Reggie (Nintendo's spokesman) has had his share of over the top comments too. That kinda stuff doesn't affect them forever.

you know, if i remember right the game came on two discs. one was a 60 fps arcade disc, the other disc had the more detialed 30fps career mode. i seem to remember the cars being really blocky on the 60 fps disc, but it was silky smooth.

the psone was my first console, and i have nothing but fond memories of it. mgs1, re2, ff7, ff8, dino crisis 1, and 2…so many great games. i remember being really blown away with mgs1. the great story, and all that chatter on the codec really sucked me into the game.

One of the only racing games which was not a kart or Burnout game that i could fully enjoy. It's so enjoyable to just play this game on easy and smoothly glide across the courses. But there was also a lot to unlock and customize. The 'Boss' veichles were so fun and creative and the very last car is defiantly satisfactory to the huge task of getting everything. GT was nothing on this game.

I still remember the mini-rivalry Ridge Racer had with Gran Turismo back in the day.

This came out around the same time as GT2 if I'm right.

Man, those were some truly amazing times for racing games.

I will get this for sure.

I remember buying the first RR with my PSX at launch window, and I remember buying Gran Turismo when it was new. And I never remembered any sort of rivalry going on between them. But maybe that was just me.
But anyway, it'd be like comparing NFL Blitz to Madden.

My first Ridge Racer game I tried was RR7 on the PS3, and it really did nothing for me, so I never looked into the series anymore…But by the looks of the comments here, I may have to grab this one for my PSP.
