Resistance 3 could be one of the year's best, despite the stiff competition.
This isn't the most brilliant footage in the world, but it gives us another look at the game in action. Thus far, we've mostly only seen a few trailers that included gameplay; this is more of a straight-up play session. They're testing out two different weapons; the overhauled Auger and the Bullseye, both of which appear to be quite effective.
It just gives you a small idea of what to expect. The lighting is bad but anything releated to R3 is fine by us. Set to launch on September 6, it'll probably be available before the newest Call of Duty (likely Modern Warfare 3 ), so maybe it has a chance of being a big success.
Related Game(s): Resistance 3
Indeed on the footage, but I was won over when I watched the VGA's!!
Amazing Footage!!!..great potential..Love how they just climb up the building and interact with the enviroment more…this game looks better than R2 and yet it has SO much dev time left….cant wait! Glad to see the weapon wheel back as well!
Environmental interaction = freshness
Lighting was bad indeed but it doesn't take away from what you can see graphically. Loved how the trees are moving in the swirling wind.
Only thing I didn't like is the "ammo status bar" they have. I probably won't notice it once I start playing it though…love me some Resistance.
You want me to get you and Resistance a room?

lame ;-|
Snorge, that was lame.
Weapon wheel, weapon upgrades (notice the "level 1" under the auger in the wheel), open environments…
Looks awesome.
Oh yeah, hopefully that wont be the final look of the melee….or maybe the guy playing it just sucks at FPSs *Shrugs*
Same melee as R2
Well maybe Killzone 3 spoiled me dammit! I wanna rip off chimera heads, smash their grill in, and gouge their eyes out as well!
I agree, I thought the melee was a bit messed up. If this is final, it just shows you how far behind they are with games like KZ2 coming out with some amazing melee action.
I wouldn't say spoiled. I think the melee has gone unnoticed to a lot of devs. I blame Halo but that's just me. CoD: BO was supposed to have gruesome melee but took it out. They definitely could've "improved" the feature but..with a weapon wheel..you won't really melee much anyway.
@ Slugga
Dont tell me I wont melee that much…If I want to be suicidal and run up on them and beat them with my digital fist so be it. What does having a weapon wheel have to do with the melee anyway???
You'll always have weapons on hand, whereas in R2 you could theoretically run out of ammo for your two holdable weapons thus requiring the melee.
But I agree, when I wanna be suicidal then ammo and weapon availability be damned.
@ Snorge
Umm..well the weapon wheel does have something to do with the melee from a strategic stand point. If you have 5-8 weapons in your wheel then I doubt you'd melee unless your enemy is right on you.
Unless, as you said you want to be suicidal and run around trying to melee people then it means nothing..don't see the point of that but to each his own..
Looks like a great game. The first 2 were just awesome, and I'm pretty sure that this installment wont disappoint.
I hate having to watch someone else play the game though, their suckiness at the game almost distracts me from the awesome qualities of the game itself.
There will be numerous PS3 exclusives making a run for GOTY…I wonder if this one will be able to make it into that category…
Ok so it wasnt just me. The guy playing is terrible! And it does make it harder to watch if they look really n00bish
As sweet as Resistance can be, it will probably sit behind KZ3, Uncharted3, and inFamous 2 in that category.
I agree World – and in my own heart, I hope that Uncharted 3 is the most amazing game ever made…but they have alot to live up to after Uncharted 2 became one of my top 3.
For me resistance is the best shooter so far this gen.
Although i did enjoy super punching north koreans off cliffs in crysis, killing back stabbing american soldier's on the last level in MW2(a first in video games i believe)& and beating helgast to death with the butt of my machine gun in KZ2.
No offence to any north koreans, americans or space nazis(its just a bit of a laugh)that frequent this site 🙂
On behalf of the Space Nazis I accept your apology 🙂
@WorldEndsWithMe
So you're a Space Nazi AND a ninja? (I remember your old avatar)
I am a Space Nazi, Ninja, Super Villain, and Juggalo 🙂
Question for people who played/owned the first two:
How does it compare to the Killzone series?
and
If i haven't played them, would you recommend me buying/renting before Resistance 3 comes out, or do you think its one of those titles I could just jump right into?
Last edited by jimmyhandsome on 2/16/2011 12:28:58 PM
The third title takes place a few years after the second with an new protagonist (he played a role in the second game), though it will have story ties to the earlier titles. I doubt it'd be that hard to catch up. But there's nothing difficult about the gameplay to grasp, so you should be right to jump in.
And IMO, it's far more arcadey and less intense than KZ2. However, I found the first one to be pure fun, and it looks like this one is going back to a nature similar to that, rather than the slightly more realistic and serious feel of R2.
Hope I helped.
Peace.

I always say R2 never got the attention it deserved but I don't know how it stands up to today's competition. You could rent it to see. I loved it.
And while there are similarities between Killzone and Resistance, I think the latter is more of a fast-paced, kill-the-monsters adventure while Killzone is darker and more military in nature. KZ also feels more sci-fi; R3 is actually placed in a post-apocalyptic USA setting.
Thanks for the help guys! Looking at previous reviews of the games it does seem more people liked the first one better, if only because it was more different from other FPS (Halo, CoD, etc). I'll probably end up buying the first one (its so cheap on amazon) and go from there with R2.
Thanks.
They probably aren't too expensive and if you play the first two you will enjoy the background story more. I really recommend them to FPS fans who don't need the heavy military focus in their games (There are various military units involved but they don't have much affect on gameplay.)
Strangely, if you like Vehicles they are present in R1 but not R2.
At the very least if you plan to jump into R3 fresh you have to see then ending of R2 on youtube to catch the cliffhanger and fate of the protagonist Nathan Hale. But I advise playing a game over youtubing it any day.
*Shakes head at people who "watched" Heavy Rain*
Wait…..dummies actually "watched" Heavy Rain instead of playing!? OMG they can all go kill themselves for that sh*t. (Disclaimer: If someone follows my advice, I am in no way, shape, or form responsible, LoL)
Yes they did, more than once in the comment threads of less palatable websites did I see people saying "Eh, I don't really wanna play a movie, I'll just watch it on youtube."
When I think back to all the tense moments during Heavy Rain and how important that was I cringe that anyone missed that AND spoiled the game for themselves.
Alright Jimmy – I think you have to play them. Like Ben said, they were underappreciated. I think it was the 2nd level in R1 with just TONS of chimera that kept swarming out at you for the whole level….I was hooked from then on.
R2 upped the ante with actual cutscenes. And I think you HAVE to play R2 because of what the main character goes through…it's just a neat story and I think it will really help you get into R3.
The ending to R2 is one of my favorites from any video game…..I think my jaw hit the floor for real. Just awesome. And like World said, if you're not going to play it, at least youtube it.
Its not the same watching it compared to playing. Obviously its still different being in the same room as the person playing it vs just watchin the footage on the net.
Well I feel sorry for them, they're the ones who spoiled it for themselves….half the fun is making your own decisions! WTF! I need to walk away from the keyboard before I go all "Wanted" on people and start smashing keyboards across their faces.
Well, you'd get a much better understanding of the background story (which is pretty important to the main plot) if you played them both before R3, so I'd recommend that.
Ah, Resistance… my first console experience. How I've missed thee. This video looked pretty cool and ratcheted up my desire for this game just a little bit more. Can't wait for release.
Peace.
This is freakin amazing!!!
I can definitely see the improvements in the environment even in this crappy quality video. I hope R3 is a breakout hit after the mixed reception of R2. I think I'm one of the few who liked R2 better, though I was bothered by the lack of weapon wheel, vehicles, and wacky weapons.
I absolutely loved R2 over the first (not saying R1 was bad either – it was great). I just thought the locations, art, color, and bosses were better.
And the CO-OP MP was amazing.
I agree, R2 was great despite it lacking what you said World, and despite all the fanboy hate.
Man there are so many top notch shooters coming out!!! I know the market is over saturated with FPS's but man. KZ3, R3, Brink, Battlefield 3 and maybe Bioshock Infinite. Ridiculous. I bet they'll all be great too. Thats a lot of top notch shooters.
Forgot about Bioshock…Geez we ARE FPS'd out this year!
Unfortunately we won't see Bioshock again till 2012 🙁
Brink looks pretty iffy to me, but I agree that everything else you said should be excellent.
I think R2 received plenty of attention, it's just that not all of it was positive. People loved R1 because of its creepy alternate 1950s setting and the fact that it eschewed the boring gameplay mechanics of generic modern shooters. Then R2 came along, and fell victim to 'COD Syndrome': it got rid of the weapon wheel, it introduced complete regen health, and a lot of it's gameplay was based on rather uninspired set pieces. I'm really excited for R3 because Insomniac has learnt from the mistakes of the second game. They now know that trying to emulate other shooters is actually detrimental to the franchise they have created. They are proud of their uniqueness and this really shows in the gameplay vids of R3: it looks truly amazing and inspired.
WEll, I certainly don't agree that R2 was not as good as R1 (IMO it was better), but I will agree with you that R3 looks excellent. I wouldn't say they "learned from their mistakes" in R2, though, I'd rather say they took everything great about the last 2 games and added even more new, good stuff to make this game.
I love the holographic look of the scoped in bulls eye. It would be interesting to see if they have the iron sights on human weapons and the holographic sights on the chimera weapons.
That was some pretty sweet gameplay, now if only we had someone competent at FPS playing. Not sure if I like the return of the health bar. I find it a mixture of frustrating and too easy/hard. By the way the new Hulk is pretty awesome.
Anyways I can't wait to see some of the new weapons and play this baby.

This guy sucks at FPS. Game looks good though. That whole scene looked like random goodness.
that guy tagged not a single chimera, and he dindn't even go full auto with the auger. His friends should be dissapointed in him
While I played through and liked the first two games the series hasn't been able to convert me into being a fan. It's one of the lesser valued PS exclusives for me.
I think I have a problem with the way Insomniac handles realistic art design. There's a certain synthetic, cg generated vibe I feel from their environments–usually lacking in lighting, shadowing, and general lifelessness to their environments. I have a hard time pinpointing it. I suppose this dusty looking area is a step in the right direction.
So while I'm hopefully for R3, this video strikes me a underwhelming. Maybe the R-series just isn't my thing. It has great guns, though, no doubt.
