I still have the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS2. It's just one of those compilations any hardcore gamer really needs in his library.

But if you'd rather take the digital route, Sony has great news , especially if you're a  PlayStation Plus member. The aforementioned Collection is headed to the PlayStation Store; as of March 29, Sega will start releasing various titles, beginning with the first two Sonic the Hedgehog installments. They'll all be playable on the PS3 and they'll have Trophy support. Plus members really get some special treatment, too: the games will be available several weeks early and entirely free to download for one month.

The list of titles and their respective release dates is below; we'll start with the free Plus releases:

And here are those titles for regular Store browsers; the retro games will cost you $4.99 each:

Ready to jump back in time? Or maybe you already have a Genesis hooked up somewhere…

I'd rather just buy the 'SEGA Mega Drive(Genesis): Ultimate Collection' on the PS3. Much more games for a much cheaper price. I'm a bit confussed to why they've done this instead of releasing the Ultimate Collection on the PS Store.

That's what I was wondering, you can pick up that collection for like $20 new now, it was only $30 when it released like over a year ago.

But are they still free once you're not a PSN PLus member? Doesn't Sony shut off your free access at that point?

I seem to remember that's how it worked.

Once your subscription to PS+ expires all free games are unavailable, but if you re-subscribe they are all available to you again and you don't have to worry about spending money on them.

So far I have well over $100 worth of free content from PS+ and I still have over half of my subscription to go. So, I would not in any way consider that sucking, but I suppose to each their own.

I doubt many will want to keep or continue playing ALL the free games and content people got a year or two from now when people no longer want to use Plus.

That's the good thing about Plus, the hardcore gamer who is always busy can get free stuff, play it then move on. If you truly loved it, continue playing and are no longer subscribed to plus, you can just buy it outright. The purchase is justified cos you love the product so much!! There's no down-side to using Plus!!

Come to think of it, I might go sign up for Plus myself soon. Much more tempting after that little comment I gave. 😀

Thanks guys.

I also wish the full game trials gave you more than an hour of play. 3 hours sounds about right to me to get an accurate assessment of the overall game experience. For example, the first hour of ME2 is simply not enough to grasp the scope of the game's design.

If Sony made that upgrade, I'd probably become a member.

Oh yeah. Just got PS+ a few weeks ago and I thinks its already paid of for in free content if not it definitely will be.

Only disappointed by plus because only the one account that purchased it can become a member, no other profiles on your PS3 nor the users' sub accounts will be plus members.

Yeah that would be nice to let any account on YOUR PS3 have PSplus rights as well!

so sweet that its free for plus. i havent picked up that collection yet so this will be some old school fun for free. having plus has paid for itself months ago. i didnt go crazy on the psn buying stuff so i have yet to get something through plus i already had.

i really hope they plan on giving us the rest of the sonic games and a few more in a later month or something.

That's all well and good, but Sega needs to get moving on more Dreamcast games on PSN.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is the way to go. I just bought it for $15 off of Craig's List. All games are 720p too. Phantasy Star II look great. I still think this is great. I just think you can do better and then you don't have to wait for your favorite game to be released.

Like so many others here, I bought the Ultimate Sonic Collection forever ago, (I think for only $30.00). It's the only game I have a Platinum trophy for. Now, Sony is giving a small handful of these games to Plus subscribers, which, according to their inflated digital release prices, comes to a $30 value. Also, plus subscribers never really own the games … they have to keep shelling out $50 a year to have the privilege of playing the games on their systems.

I don't know about you, but this seems like a bum deal to me. If at any point PS Plus seemed like a good value, I would be the first to jump aboard, but so far I haven't seen anything to allow me to commit.

I would be more excited about this but I already have the Genesis Collection. Good for those who just want some of the games though, especially if they are plus members.
