Guitar Hero is no longer profitable and that has resulted in a disbanding of the franchise business.

But few believe we'll never hear from the series again. In fact, the cancellation announcement may not affect a new installment that was already in development… According to Jack DeVries, speaking in a recent IGN Game Scoop show , Activision is still quietly anticipating some new Guitar Hero :

"So, uh…I’ve heard rumors I’m not allowed to talk about…from…but I’m going to talk about them anyway. I’m not going to name names or anything, but…I would predict Guitar Hero comes back holiday 2012….because we know they’re developing one…"

Other people assumed he was talking about the canceled 2011 project, so DeVries clarified:

"…there’s another one that was supposed to be after that that I know of that has not stopped. They are still working on it. That’s all I can say. It was never scheduled for 2011, so it’s not affected."

It was quite the shock to learn that Guitar Hero was finished, even if everyone was well aware of the ailing music genre. Maybe the franchise just needs a little rest, that's all; maybe the fans will want to see it return a few years from now. Over-saturation didn't seem to work very well.

Well it's definitely a good franchise name so I doubt they'd just ditch it altogether. Still… I now wonder what this is? Definitely intriguing, but I'm not buying it.

I never was really a music game person. It is only fun if your going over to your uncle's house party (for me that is).

Well I rather play a music game over a sports game and I rather play a sports game over a puzzle/board game, but it really depends what it is. I freaking loved brain age.

Perhaps the fact that there were probably 4-5 released a year lead to its demise? It was cool when it first came out (especially rock band) but i find it more fun/amusing to watch people play then to play myself. Maybe because i'm musically challenged?

I wouldn't be surprised. Heck it wouldn't surprise me if activision simply said they were canceling it hoping to boost sales.

I ate these games up at first. Well not right at first. When GH: World Tour came out I did. I bought that, Metallica, Smash Hits all within like a year. I liked the drums on GH more than Rock Band because you actually had your cymbals. See I actually drum and I always held out hope they would make an actual trapset like peripheral. They didn't make a very good one so I took the sensor from the peripheral and connected them to my actual trapset. Music games were much more fun after that.

over saturatated so the market collapsed, yet the complete oversatauration of fps seems to hold up. it's definitely the multiplayer holding that market up.

i mean i get it, i've recently been playing the kz3 beta, and understand the addictive quality of the multiplayer. you know what, i actually think the success of cod cut into that market

"the cancellation announcement may not affect a new installment that was already in development".

Well hell True Crime: Hong Kong was almost a finished product & they canceled it; is there any rumor that suggest that it still might get a release in the future. I would really like to see an article about how TC:HK is being picked up & published by someone else because I really wanted to play that game it looked like it was going to breath new life into the series, but instead I'm still trying to wrap my head around why the hell would Activision scrapped a possible hit along with Guitar Hero(even though I don't play GH games).
