It was quite possibly the biggest launch title for the PS2 and now, over a decade later, the sequel is coming to light.

Famitsu has been offering new details on Namco's Tekken Tag Tournament 2 , and the latest report talks about the new game's "Stage Gimmick" system. It's a little confusing based on the translation but it seems our partner – this is Tekken TAG, after all – may end up in an advantageous environmental position. The example Fmaitsu gave is when you slam an opponent into a wall; that wall breaks, and he goes flying through it to land in a new area. In that new area, it just so happens that your partner is waiting for the hapless victim, and continues to beat the tar out of him. They also have revealed the game's item system and this time, those items aren't just for show. No, they can actually be used to give yourself the edge…it seems weapons like a bat and a "hammer head" will be featured.

Okay, so that's a little Soul Calibur influence, but we're okay with that. As for confirmed characters, we don't have a full roster list but the magazine gave readers glimpses of Kazuya Mishima (well, of course), Ling Xiaoyu, Zafina, and Bob. Producer Katsuhiro Harada also added that all playable characters from Tekken 6 will return. So who's up for this?

Not me, I play alone. And the people online just cheat and whup my ass so there is no sense in fighting them.

How do they cheat?

okay, maybe "cheat" isn't entirely accurate, but YOU try to fight somebody online who has found a character and set of moves that are so cheap that there is no defense against them and see if you don't get frustrated.

hehe well, in tekken you're basically never invulnerable. there's always a way to counter most any strategy, even if it may seem impossible, or cheap. there's years worth of depth and refinement a player can invest themselves in a game like tekken. so a person would be forgiven to think certain general aspects are cheap or lame. it's not too rare that i find someone who tries to spam certain lower frame moves over and over, but knowing when and how to interrupt their assault usually results in beating down those "cheap" tactics relatively quickly. more experienced players can typically spot and overcome lame repetitive behavior without too much trouble.

yeah I don't have years to put into learning a fighting mechanic in a game I won't be playing in anymore in a month. What can I do whilst I'm juggled except rage quit? There needs to be a way to keep noobs together.

@World..I believe they have filters that will allow you to play against someone similar in skill. I know they had it in Dark Resurrection at least..

yeah, world, it requires a level of dedication to be competitive online. When I first took T5 DR online I usually got my butt kicked pretty hard. This is where I realized my local arcade didn't have the diversity of players that an online environment has. But having stayed committed to learn and become better, over time, I was able to hold my own very well in ranked matches. Even if it took me like 500, or so losses to get me to that point.

Should be right up your alley Temji since you whoop ass in Gaiden. NG Black caused me to rage quit so I never got back into it. Maybe the dumbed down NG3 will being me back, gettin too old for having mad skills anymore.

Being a long time Tekken fan this game will be a D1P for me.
I'm not particularly a big time tag fan–I'm more of a 'mono e mono' kind of fighter. But with it being a Tekken game, I understand the fight system well enough to have good fun with it.

I just got my HRAP3 stick in today. And holy heck! This thing is huge, thick, heavy and awesome. I plugged it in right away to test out it's awesome'ness. My old school arcade skills didn't fail me, I pulled off Paul's Ultimate Tackle on my first try. Finally, I'll be able to play complicated characters like Nina with greater proficiency.

And now that I've got a proper stick I plan on giving SF4 some more love'n.
Maybe not as much love'n as this legendary evo SF3 player from 2004, Daigo.

Fast forward to about 2:30min in to see the exciting conclusion.
mad skillz, indeed.

How is juggling cheating?

Temjin001
Temjin001

it's an age old complaint of any fighter with juggles. but the dedicated fans who know better don't usually make such claims.

this is basically what happens when the boy who practiced their character for hours alone in their bedroom felt they reached a level of being unstoppable. That is until they took their game online, where they got their butt kicked hard against human competition. But their pride tells them their loss couldn't have been attributed to anything else other than "the other guy cheated and this game sucks" 'tucks tail behind their legs and cowardly runs away'
let the whiners complain and run away to their non-competitive games. The games that won't remind them that there are other gamers in the world better than they are. And they can continue to live within in their little world that revolves around them.

..phew, man I sound like a jerk =p
I decided to have just a little fun with this =)

I am that boy 🙂 It's bad enough when the AI cheats by being cheap, but people are supposed to know better.

Owned the first Tekken Tag. Played it once, then sold it. Just never have liked the series at all no matter how hard I tried to get into it. Especially if there was a Killer Instinct or Samurai Shodown machine nearby.

Killer Instinct needs to make a come back. Couldn't stop playing Gold when it came on N64..Just bought Samurai Showdown off the PSN..still takes me back..

I'm gonna look into this more as it pregresses, I nearly got the platinum on Tekken 6. I just need to beat that Nancy machine, its really giving me a hard time.
So, in this tag version you can switch characters and use items? Sounds good but i've never played a tag version to know if it works well.
The ideal of using you favorite characters in a match seems epic.

I'm not too excited they're making this..I'm more interested in Tekken x Street Fighter and Street Fighter x Tekken..Seen gameplay of the Street Fight x Tekken..Haven't heard anything about the other..

I really didn't like tekken 6 they removed the pick up and play approach the other ones had. As for this I hope it will be better than tekken 6.

@slugga KI2 is the reason I bought a N64 back in the day. I hope one day KI makes a return.

KI was the primary reason of me getting my 64 back in the day. Mortal Kombat 4 was better on 64 then PS also…

If Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat can make triumphant returns I KNOW Killer Instinct can.

Well of cousre Killer Instinct has a higher chance of having a more successful comeback than either MK or SF because we've seen a BUNCH of both SF and MK games but only one Killer Instinct.

this game is an arcade-only release, however the only reason why they are now talking about it stem from the fact that next weekend is the annual AOU arcade tradeshow.

and every tekken that started out in the arcade made it's way onto the playstation. do you really think it'll always be an arcade only game?

I laugh when people get excited about a new Tekken and then say, "Oh its only for the arcade now" …um, I agree with @Temjin001, its pretty much sure fire its coming to the consoles.

(Please leave it as an exclusive for the PS3 this time, the 360 version of T6 was absolute ASS!)

Tekken Tag Tournament was my favourite title in the series and the only one I still own today besides Tekken 3. After TTT, the series went completely downhill. Considering that, I'm very iffy about wanting to play a sequel to TTT. I may just leave the good memories alone and go back and play the original if I need a serving of some Tekken.

So that makes over 60characters… They'll all be available from the get-go, I hope.

It doesnt sound that confusing, just like on DoA2 where you hit someone through a barrier, but your first character doesnt jump down after them due to your 2nd character being there already.

As for the weapons, sounds silly, but then Tekken has just soiled themselves, can't believe that stupid Alisa from T6… horrible.

Can't wait for this I hope they do something different with the controls in the Adventure mode if they even have cause it always just feels tacked on.
