After completing the epic God of War III , Sony Santa Monica wouldn't say anything concrete about the future, but they have said they don't want their award-winning franchise to become an annual occurrence.
However, are we already seeing evidence of a new God of War project? All the rumors and speculation you've heard likely started with new job listings at Sony Santa Monica; those jobs can be found at the Playstation Careers website . You can also see a screen capture of several of those jobs at GamerXChange . It seems they're hiring for the following positions:
Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean the new employees will be working on a new GoW title, but Sony Santa Monica is certainly best known for one of gaming's series. We have no idea if Kratos will be back and in truth, considering the ending of GoWIII, there's no knowing where the team will go for the fourth installment.
It seems HipHopGamer may have some inside info as well; GoWIV will feature 3D, co-op, and "better visuals" (as if that's any huge shock). But right now, we know nothing and we have to admit that. Perhaps we'll get a huge unveiling at E3.
Co op sounds blasphemous to me. 3D sure. Gow 4? Let it die and let these geneuises work an a new ip. Not that I dont want a new gow, I really do, but they should move on for now
Yah I agree, GOW III was their swan song, their peak of videogame brilliance. I don't want them to go down the route of making more of what would (fundamentally) be the same game. Not that more GOW entries would be bad, I'm just sure that Santa Monica Studios is more capable than just making GOW games.
I'd actually want Santa Monica to make a new IP, because it would be fresh and interesting!

As long as the don't create a crap GOW then I don't see why they should not have another go at it. Take a break yes but to me it is inevitable that they continue this IP. If they have Deimos star in it then I can imagine Co-op. Kratos And Deimos side by side bringing Chaos to whoever crosses them.
I do agree that SM should also look into another IP but they are big enough to do both. Are they not?
These are awesome rumblings. Now that the GoW team has had their first extremely impressive use of PS3's technology under their belt, I anticipate they'll be able to really stretch their imagination even further and deliver another unprecedented, nothing short of stunning, experience that'll garner critical acclaim by everyone but EDGE magazine.
Lmao I guarantee you they'd give critical acclaim if there was product placement (i.e. their products) in the games =P
I wonder if it'll be an NGP, title? Historically, Sony has sent over their 1st party franchises to other frist party studios that are portable devoted (aka Ready At Dawn, Sony Bend, etc).
But seeing how NGP as a platform is closer to console platform than not, and seeing how as they'll be pushing as many flag-ship titles as they can, I wouldn't consider it outside the realm of possibility.
Personally, I hope it's a full blown PS3 game. I would hate to think a flagship franchise would have to play second fiddle to a handheld when the best technology still exists within the PS3. Though, I do hope Sony sources out a team to do a GoW for the NGP specifically. I'm 100% fine with the NGP but I don't want hardware options competing for game devs time. If GoW, or any other major franchise, want's to come to the UGP, awesome. But create a specialized team for the task (like they have).
I don't think Santa Monica does portable titles.
I have found a way to counter EDGE. I just look at it from the Bizzarro world point of view. Problem solved.
I too do not want to see GOW release yearly. In fact, I think GOW should end at GOW3 because Santa Monica is a really talented team; and I would like to see them pursue different games. It would be great to see them create a Heavenly Sword 2.
Nah Bugz, Heavenly Sword sucked. am I the only one that thinks this?
Yeah, I think you are. For a 2007 game, it had amazing graphics, gameplay, voice acting, and motion capture to an amazing story and an amazing character build up.

no you're not the only one. The gameplay was pretty damn mediocre to me when i played it back then

Heavenly Sword no suck. It was a brief, somewhat flawed epic with lots of beautiful eyecandy, superb storytelling, great immersion in varying locales, and most importantly a strong new IP debut with great sales that could be made into something legendary were it to press forward.
Hopefully they add a little bit more to the series than in GoW3. Don't get me wrong, I loved GoW3, but in terms of adding new things to the franchise it probably added the least out of them all (other than CoO).
I am really excited to see where they take it though. There are several mythologies out there that could work really well in GoW, and the possibilities are endless for what new weapons, magic, characters, creatures, and environments they could add.
Of course they could always pursue a new IP, and I think that would also be a good move for them, but if they keep making high quality GoW games that don't come out yearly then they'll be just fine. Plus GoWIV's probably going to have significant changes now that we're out of Greek mythology, so either way it'll be interesting to see what these guys put out next.

Yeah, I want them to take this game to the next level gaameplay wise. I think they will. Typically, the first games of this gen have laid great foundations (Sony for example; Uncharted, KZ2, LBP, Resistance) and the sequels knock them into the stratosphere. If some goddess bestows the Blades of Newness, that look different, but function entirely the SAME, I'll de disappointed.
If GOW could get to Uncharted levels of storytelling presentation then it would obscene.
Add all the people you want to the GOW team, but put them on a new game. GOW had 5 solid games and it's time to let Kratos rest. If they wanna stick to the same formula then it's time for a new mythos at least. It ended well and now it's time to move on before it becomes stale.
I would buy a GOWIV, but not one day 1.
Goddess of War?
Sure why not, but don't make her bald.
They could make a game featuring Kratos little brother Deimos and his adventures and turn that into a spin-off trilogy.

GoW 4 needs to happen I don't want this franchise to end with that scene after credits =S, if it's really going to end I want a proper ending.

Might this be Deimos' story?
Where else can this series go? He defeated Zeus, and lost his family. He has no motivation to live, what reason does he have to continue fighting?
Maybe he found a scientist that enables him to travel back in time, in a Delorean preferably, and the only way he can use this is to do his bidding for him.

you are right there is no need for gow4, I suppose the ending left it wide open for a continuation in the future, but I dont think it'd happen so soon. I never played ghost of sparta so idk about Deimos bothered then the gow 1 video but maybe he could be the main character, cuz I tho kratos was pretty much toast. Also who would he fight? I still stand by Santa monica doin a new ip and letting ready at dawn make a brilliant ngp gow game that could continue where gow3 left off if they so wish.
Ps. Hey are you L? Your pic looks like it.
Yes, Kira
thats very exciting for me, its like my favorite show, even tho L and kira are enemies, im just pumped there's anothere deathnote fan on this site.
Also I thought what if the gow franchise branched off into different mythologies. I still dont know how gowiv would work but id sure play it if it did come out.
OMG! Do not toy with me with this rumblings lol! I'd love to play another God of War game on PS3, but I think it might got something to do with NGP?
Personally I'd rather see them do something new. Hack n' slash has never been my thing. I would love to see what they can do in other genre's.
if theres a GOW 4 it wont be a sequel to 3, it will probably pick up where GoS left off.
theres still heaps of ground to fill in between GOW1 and GOW2 and GOW2 and GOW3.
i just hope its not like 3, bring back the brutality of the original, bring back the scale of 2 and the brilliant puzzle and level design.
GOW3 = the industries biggest disappointment EVER!!!!!!!!!
in all honesty though stuff GOW, put SM on a heavenly sword sequel.
now that would be freaking epic!!!!!
either that, or a new IP, something different to what we have now something completley unique, and totally different to GOW.
they have, well did master hack and slash games till GOW3, so can they master another genre?
I know it is opinion but you always stain your comment with a big fat negative.
I agree completely that it will not/should not be a sequel and that taking the best of all 3 GOW entries would blow our minds.
Heavenly Sword in SMs hands would be outrageous but Nariko and Kratos crossing paths would be a PS3 wet dream come reality.

GOWIII wasn't a dissappointment, but it defintitely didn't feel like 1 or 2. GOWI was the best storytelling in the series, while GOWII took a step forward in the action department, but took a step backwards in the storytelling department. GOWIII saw an big increase in action and again, a step back in the storytelling departement due to the lack of a narrator…so maybe, GOWIV can be the ultimate GOW experience.
no, it was a massive disappointment!
i was expecting it to be like 1 or 2 but bigger and in HD, but what i got was a totally new IP!
wheres the story?
wheres the puzzles?
wheres the platforming?
wheres the fantastic level design?
wheres the brutality?
wheres the fun!?
GOW 1 and 2 were classics, i can play them over and over again and never get bored of them!
GOW3 i finished 4 times if i remember right, but only to get my plat, once i got that it was straight back to EB.
@_____________
Had you played GoW 1 & 2 then the story had already been laid out and 3 was a continuation. I can agree that there was a lack of puzzles in the game. There was plenty of platforming, and level design was good.
GoW 3 was packed with brutality. I mean what more could you want? Helios got it bad, Hercules, Hermes, and Zues got it bad as well. I had worlds of fun with GoW 3.
Again..I'm lost at how you can bag on a game..Yet turn around and say you beat it 4 times and got the plat for it? Nobody plays a game that much if they don't like it. Again, I really think you never played it…
Please do GOWIV with a worthy ending for Kratos. It took me 3 full playthrough to really grasp the meaning of Santa Monica intended ending. The storytelling to me was awful in GOWIII, but the story was cool. What GOWIII missed was a narrator…that really captured the essence of the wordless warrior. A narrator during the final cutscene would have made sense of everything instead of forcing me to put the obvious puzzle together myself. The ending to GOWIII left alot of questions like MGS3. So maybe GOWIV will answer every possible question like MGS4 did. That would be assume. Either way, GOWIII had the most replay value out of anygame I bought last year so bring on more Kratos.
I hope they just create a better IP
It's far more likely it'll be a God of War game for the Sony NGP.
Gawd I hate Hiphopgamer.
but they're all hip-hoppy.
Looks like they're going to start milking the series. Goodbye GOW we came to know and love…
People really need to stop quoting HipHopGamer as a credible source. 3D, co-op and "better visuals"? You could apply that description to pretty much any game coming out on the PS3 in the near future.
Who is HipHopGamer?
Who is HipHopGamer?
A miserable little pile of secrets!
There has been talk for years that once the God of War story arc was complete, the next GOW series would focus on the Norse myths. I think that would be phenomenal, and it makes a lot of sense — the Greek myth territory has been pretty well-charted at this point and it may make sense to let it lie for a while, at least on PS3. Ready at Dawn's portable iterations of God of War are shockingly great, so I think we could get some sweet side stories/prequels with Kratos and ancient Greece that would scratc that itch just fine.
But a Norse setting would provide incredible fodder for the next GOW universe and story arc. Here's hoping that's the direction they take the series, on PS3, next.
I would love to see another GOW game but in due time as I see it. IF not then thats ok too, I loved all 3 of the games a 4th would be interesting but u have to be careful don't want to ruin it by pushing it quickly.
Considering it won GotY by users at a multitude of gaming sites it really isn't hard to see that they'd want to keep producing Kratos adventures. I for one certainly know I'd buy another.
An epic redemption title in which kratos somehow brings everything back would be a damn good idea!
I disagree with most comments here.
I would love to see the most badass character in v-games back.
The story is the only thing preventing that. The way they could fix this is by introducing a world where the Greek Mythology era didn't end. Yes you heard me.
—
But if they must "move on" let it be Heavenly Sword 2
I'd love to see a god of war of Norsk Mythology. That would be bad ass.
Looking forward to it, bring it on!!
