Either they didn't release quite enough copies or it's a really hot item…or both.

Mass Effect 2 launched for the PlayStation 3 this week and apparently, retailers are already finding it difficult to keep in stock. According to a recent BioWare Twitter update , ME2 is selling pretty darn well, and they apologize for making it hard to find. The Tweet reads:

"Mass Effect 2 is now a rare find! Sorry everyone – post in our forums and let us know if you come across some copies."

So, if you haven't yet picked it up but plan to this weekend, bear in mind that you might have to search around a bit. With BioWare apologizing, it's almost as if EA really didn't produce enough copies; we remember seeing boxes of ME2 for the Xbox 360 stacked around GameStop stores when the title released early last year. It's probably worth the search, though, especially if you're into sci-fi RPGs.

Our review should be ready to go very soon. I've been playing it for the past few days. I won't be dropping any hints now; just pay attention this weekend…

Good, maybe PS3 users will give this game a better reception then the 360 user-base did–not bad, but I think it's capable of more sales. I guess there's always the PSN download for the desperate gamers.
My user review, I think, will be posted soon (maybe Ben has to edit all of those curse words out 😉

Thanks, Ben. I don't see it in the recent user review section. Though, I see I can access it by picking it out from the alphabetic archives.

I'm looking forward to both of your reviews. I'm pretty sure they'll be good. I think I've gotten far enough to make a review BUT I'm not that good with explaining things and expressing my feelings :P.

-Starting Semi Rant-

I will say one thing though…..the game's story IS fantastic but there's some hiccups that I'm VERY disappointed with. I've glitched A LOT, during most cut-scenes the audio is out of sync, and than my major gripe with this game is that the xbox fans had the nerve to say GT5's load times were long when ME2 is just as bad. I find this so irritating when you die and instead of respawning FAST, they actually go to a loading screen, waiting for HOURS! This is just unacceptable to me especially when this is considered a AAA game. They should have a least offered an install to get rid of most of the issues. Even the initial home GUI lags while loading up due to trying to access the internet.

It feels like sloppy coding IMHO. I don't really feel like it was optimized for the PS3 other than the slightly increase in the visuals. It just feels like a high class 360 game. It sounds very ignorant I know, but I'm so used to optimized games such as U2, Gow3, and so many other high class PS3 titles.

Now don't get me wrong the game IS great, but I find very little RPG elements and more TPS. Again, not bad, just misleading when Bioware claims to be RPG king…love the confidence but there needs to be some truth behind statements for me to actually acknowledge you.

A least the story is great, and IMHO that's an understatement. For crying out loud it's enough for me too poor hours of my life in it.

Just a little disappointed, that's all :).

The RPG elements aren't just the leveling up; it is also in the research data (for example armor, weapon, and shield enhancements), ship upgrades (more fuel, more powerful shielding, increase in supply of probes for planet mining) and the paragon/renegade morality system that you choose to accumulate (or otherwise) in your playthrough.

Put simply, the RPG elements are in fact streamlined and more subtle (i.e. "not in your face") but they've been integrated so well into the game and the context of the story that Bioware claims to be the "RPG King", like you said 🙂

Dridion
Dridion

@Victor321

I never looked at it that way…You are right. I mean I knew that you could do those various upgrades with each new squad member recruited and what not. Also the fact that you can "evolve" each character into an upgraded class for better states and like you said the tech upgrades. My prob, I guess, is that I'm so used to UI's that have a huge learning curve to actually get the most out of the RPG also grinding to get to that level cap one always dream of lol. I felt a little cheated. At first it felt more like a TPS with "upgrades" to various elements but nothing to substantial. In a way I still feel that way but you said it best…the RPG elements are in fact streamlined and more subtle.

This does make it better for the casual audience. I have a friend who I call a drone cause all he plays is CoD…God forbid you suggest an RPG. What's funny is that he picked this game up and is actually much further than I thought he'd be. He seems to be enjoying himself and in that respect, Bioware has done a fantastic job.

@Dridion

No problemo, I'm glad I helped =D!

I do know where you're coming from, I've played tons of RPGs where after grinding, you get the most out of it. I still love RPGs like that, believe me (the FF and Persona entries come to mind)! I've also spent over 300 hours of ME2 (5 different accounts, all imported from ME1) ^.^

On a side note, when Bioware started development of ME2, they re-worked the technology they used (UE3) for ME1, from top to bottom. At its core, it's still UE3, but much, much closer to an internal engine, if you know what I mean.

Basically, imagine Naughty Dog's game engine was called "The Naughty Engine". Like Epic Games, they release it as middleware, for any other gaming company to use for their games.

Now, say a game developer called PSX Industries chooses to use Naughty Dog's "The Naughty Engine" for their game. They tweak and modify it to such an extent that it's vaguely similar to its original form. By now, it wouldn't be consider to be "The Naughty Engine" anymore right? However, at its core, it is still just that.

That's what Bioware's current engine is.

Also, they started development of ME3 1-2 weeks before ME2's release (for 360/PC); specifically, they started to improve the engine, so by the time ME2 released for 360/PC Bioware was already cranking and tweaking the engine further.

That engine became used for ME2 on PS3, and will be used for ME3 itself.

Seriously? well I'm happy for them, based on the reviews of ME2 ( that imo were overrated but still…) on 360 didn't sell has deserved.

good that they can sell on another console a year later.

When I got my copy, there was only one left after it. I've been trying to finish up a couple other games quick before I devote myself to it fully, but from what I've played so far, I really like it.

I got mine day of release at Best Buy next to my house and it was the last copy. I asked the guy if they only received a few and he said no, that they had two stands set up and full and all the games were already gone. I didn't know so many people near me owned PS3s

Me? No way, I'm a sweetheart. I ride a motorcycle too fast up and down the streets, I sit in my apartment and produce loud techno at all hours of the night, and I watch films with a surround sound system up on full blast. What's not to love?

@coverton

Oh that's awesome, you remind me of myself lol. What kind of bike do you ride…. cruiser, supersport, etc. I myself prefer the standard Zx6r from Kawa. I love carving canyons so my 600 is perfect although liters are nearly the same wight now a days as 6's but 6's are easier to flick and they already have more than enough power. I guess I'm a bit biased (Kawa 600) as that's all I've been around since I was little. Throw on a Two Bros. full system and a PCV with Dyno calibration and I'm set.

Have a Yami 600 myself. I do like the 600's but I was on a Suzuki litre bike that was lighter than my 600 and I think I fell in love. If I didn't have to save up for a car I would have already put down on the bike and if I were still young I would have gone for both, but with age and school come responsibilities and car seats.

Sucks being a broke college student but being 30 and have to be responsible too.

I wonder if they issued the same number that was sold in the same period on the 360, expecting figures to be the same, not realising the PS3 user base is more tuned in to this type of game.

Then again, maybe the hype got everyone, or EA didn't issue enough intentionally just so that they could say this.
Peace.

Fane1024

I would guess the initial "print" run was much smaller than on 360, given that they likely expected that most people had already played it.

Hopefully, EA decides to press another batch of discs ASAP.

I was fortunate enough to find a copy at Best Buy, but it was only due to two of them being misplaced.
Hopefully this means that 'Mass Effect 2' will have very strong sales on PS3.

Nice to see it selling well on ps3, maybe now some companies will stop putting rpgs exclusively on the xbox, just dumb anyway.

As for me I'm not getting it until there's a price drop, so no worries here. If I can get it a year late on ps3, than I can wait another year and get it cheap.

It's 12GB. You will need to have 24GB free at the time of download to accommodate the install file and the game itself but in the end it will only take up 12GB and whatever DLC you decide on getting

I think it's just that they're not shipping enough units. The Gamestop I work at only received a dozen copies for release day, and they restocked us with another dozen just yesterday. And the other store I work at only received 4 copies of it.. So..

WorldEndsWithMe

mayhaps they figured releasing it so late on PS3 wouldn't help the sales.

As soon as everyone is done playing it then YOINK, I'll snap up a dirt cheap copy from one of the early adopters.

It may get crap for not being very RPG-ish, but anything that remotely resembles an RPG is going to sell pretty well on PS3. Kudos to Bioware for correcting a "Mass Mistake"

Seriously…Mass Effect 2 is top notch in all areas. The third person shooter aspect isn't the best, but it's the most fun I have had in a long time when it comes to third person shooters. Controlling actions and slowing down gameplay during battles adds alot of character to shooting. The writing and story are beyond top notch and I think I have a found my number 1 game of all time. Keep in mind I like sci-fi and deep storytelling…something ME2 suceeds at. I can honestly say I like this better than Demons Souls, Uncharted 1 and 2, GTA IV, and Fallout 3 (my favorites). ME2 has become my favorite game and I'm only 30hrs in w/ alot more to finish. Xbox had a real hard hitter here…thank god us PS3 only owners can play this thing already.
