Duke Nukem Forever: Vaporware Becomes Reality In May

Feel free to insert your favorite joke right here, but we're going to bypass the humor and stick to the news. After 13 years, we're all joked out. …wait, that was a jab, wasn't it?

It's isn't a vague release window and it isn't a rumor: 2K Games and Gearbox Software have announced what they're calling a "landmark date in gaming history." Yes, the baddest of the bad, Duke Nukem, will at long last make his return to the video game world as Duke Nukem Forever will launch for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on May 3, 2011 in North America, and three days later "internationally." Dubbed the "perfect, uncompromising ass-kicking hero," Duke is ready to go, and they've got an all-new trailer to tide you over until May. Said Christoph Hartmann, 2K president:

"The moment fans all over the world have been waiting for is almost here. May 3, 2011 marks Duke’s return as he unleashes his brash and brutally honest wit on the world. His return is going to be epic and one that will make video gaming history!"

Every nasty thing from the pig cops to ravaging alien hordes will swarm across the earth, and only one man can save humanity. Featuring "over-the-top weapons, non-stop action, and unprecedented levels of interactivity," we'll even be able to participate in extra-curricular activities like playing basketball, lifting weights, and yeah, checking out the ladies (that includes reading dirty magazines, by the way). Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said he is "proud, humbled and even astounded" to make this release announcement…we're pretty astounded ourselves.

If you want to sample DNF before it's released, you can become a member of the Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club; membership certificates can be found in Borderlands Game of the Year Editions. If you don't want to do that, well, you'll just have to wait. Duke Nukem Forever is only a few months away, people. Really and for true.

P.S. If you missed it, check out the short film in honor of "The Duke."

There's probably going to be a lot people saying that it's not worth the 13 year long wait. And I get the impression that it probably won't be because it's a multiplatform game.

If it were exclusive to either the PC or the PS3 then we might have some reason to hope. But no, it does both and it includes the Xbox 360 which is hands down the weakest of the three platforms. So compromise is probably inevitable.

It's probably best to keep one's expectations low for this one.

On the technicals I agree with you, but on the Entertainment value I expect very good things. Hope I'm right.

I can't help thinking that if I were the publisher, I might have one dig at the vaporware thing and announce a date, but then 'delay' the game with a HUGE press release, but announce the next day that the delay is only a day…

Only if the game is any good…

I have a terrible feeling it's going to be a generic 1st person shooter with the same corny jokes from the original – but I may be wrong.

I think that is exactly what you should expect Highlander, but at the same time, if it's like the first games with all the corny jokes and gratuitous nudity then it wouldn't really be a generic 1st person shooter would it? To me another generic FPS would be another military conflict and fatigues.

Maybe the shot in the arm that FPSs need right now is some corn and cheese. Honestly when was the last time you saw a good FPS with corn ball jokes, dancing girls, and that cheesy flair? Matt Hazard doesn't count because I said good game 😛

Well said, coverton. Sometimes cheese is good.

There are so many FPSs on the market and yet nothing that has that Duke Nukem attitude.

I agree with you, they do need a 'fun' shot in the arm for sure. What I was getting at is I really don't want to see a generic shooter, where it's really just a paint by the numbers game that has had a veneer of Duke Nuken overlaid on it.

It needs that cheesy, politically incorrect humor and partial nudity, it needs Duke to be completely goofy at times and a bit of a dolt too. It needs all of that, but the game world needs to back that up with less realism and more focus on good level design and interesting visuals.

You know that I mean? I mean you could use the MW2 engine to build a decent generic shooter and choose an urban location, then apply some lewd dialog and a few topless pictures in the backgrounds. But that wouldn't make it a Duke game, the attitude has to be in every part of the game.

I'm just fearful that with the apparent speed of development since the new team took it on, we may get a more generic shooter that has been themed for Duke, but not really a game designed around Duke.

Highlander – I know what you mean. I had the same outlook, until I read up on the overall development of the game on Wikipedia, and also saw the recent trailer. It looks like Gearbox and Triptych Games took what was actually an almost finished PC game and polished it up for release. They also did the console ports. The trailer shows some pretty interesting levels and gameplay as well. I guess we won't really know until it's out. I just may try to get my hands on the early demo. 😉

All right, I know exactly what you mean now. I fully agree with that too. I don't want the same physics, realism, and feeling that all these war simulators have in my Duke game and I think that's what you're saying.

I wonder how those console ports are going to turn out? Because if PS3 gamers get the short end of the stick again there will likely be consequences.

Coverton,

The only other game I can think of with a healthy sprinkling of good ole corny cheese sauce dialog, is "Deathspank"

Hmmm…I'm kinda disappointed in the graphics, but then again, it is a multiplat. The gameplay looks awesome though. Just hope its not too much like Bulletstorm (we have to have some variety in our insane balls-to-the-wall FPS's).

I know what you mean I myself have never played any FPS or 3rdPS cause I suck at those games. I tend to stick to only playing Action/Adventure/ Platformer, Fighting & some racing games here or there (Preferably Burnout, Motorstrom). But I just saw a trailer for it & it kinda cool there was this one part where he punching a giant monster's nuts into oblivion, it was funny.

I have to say..they waited too long for this game. I'd totally delay that bad boy until 2012. There are far too many FPS' about to come out this year that are pretty much guaranteed to be good and sell..KZ3 drops next month, Resistance 3 in September, Bulletstorm same day as KZ, not the next installment of CoD..

Got a bad feeling this isn't going to sell..

KillZone3 comes 2 whole months b4 this game does it's coming out in may so how does any of those other games hurt Duke's release when Resistance3, Bulletstorm all come out late summer, & fall.

Based on the info from PAX, and the trailer that just came out, I think this looks like it's going to be a blast! The high level of interactivity along with the trademark Duke attitude and quips – I can't wait! Despite all of the other FPS releases this year, I think this one will set itself apart from the rest.

Looking Glass
Looking Glass

Oh it will definitely set itself apart. But I'm not so sure if it will be in a good way. I'm mean Duke Nukem's brand of ridiculously misogynistic hyper-masculine stupidity may have found a place for itself in the early to mid 90s. But I'm not so sure if it would be welcome in this day and age.

And besides I think it's a strong possibility that Duke's stupid monotone voice is really going to annoy a lot of people.

LOL – I'm pretty sure the overly macho caricature that is Duke Nukem is all in fun. I'm just as much a fan of a deep story and an emotional connection with the characters as anyone. But I also appreciate the entertainment value of something on the lighter side that's just meant to be fun. Obviously, there are other factors that go into a game, and we have yet to know just how good the game will be. But I'm glad to see it was finally released, and am really looking forward to it.
I guess I am also not all bent out of shape over how long it took to get released and all the other BS. It is just a video game after all. 😉

Haha, I'm not sure how great this game will be, but I'm definitely buying it for the sake of having some form of Nukem to blast the baddies with! I doubt it'll break any laws of physics or laws of.. Anything really. I don't doubt that it'll be entertaining, though!

Should be good for a laugh and a few "Take that muthafuchas!" moments. I'll get it but I'm not thrilled out of my seat.

Remember, this isn't a game that has actually been developed for 13 years, it's a game that has been made recently with a title slapped onto it to cash in.

Still, nostalgia alone makes it a buy.

I thought 3D Realms is co-developing this with Gearbox.
How can this be made recently.

3D Realms had darned near nothing to show for 13 years of effort. They brought the concept and basic art assets, I'm not sure what else they had to bring.
