Next month's Game Informer ought to be well worth a read; just check out the scheduled content.

First and foremost is the title on the cover: the recently announced The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , in development at Bethesda and guaranteed to appeal to hardcore role-playing fans everywhere. Evidently, the print version of the magazine cover will feature a "special ultraviolet coating that accentuates the symbol in the center, giving a striking, three-dimensional texture to the image." The 14-page feature will also boast 20 new screenshots and a ton of info on the game's story and gameplay, so brace yourself for an RPG explosion! But there's more: GI lists their top 50 games of 2010, gives us a new blowout on Mortal Kombat , their Dead Space 2 review, and our personal favorite, the "frightening look at the newest Silent Hill." We've been hearing about this for quite some time, but everything has been speculation; we have little in the way of confirmed details. And oh yes, we've been waiting on a new Silent Hill for a loooong time.

Well, just to clarify, we've been waiting on a SH installment that wasn't a portable or downloadable title. The PS3 could lend the freaky franchise a whole lot of intense, chilling atmosphere…

Don't be telling me about some silly new Silent Hill effort in an article about the RPG of the year.

Game Informer is just including that SH announcement so you have something to wipe your ass with while reading the 14 pages about Skyrim.

Yet some of us are looking forward to the new SH more than that FPS rpg.

You're looking forward to SH? There hasn't been a good SH since 2003. Just a bunch of lame attempts at trying to be scary and you're looking forward to THAT over a sequel to RPG of the year?

Ooookay then.

With all due respect to what Silent Hill USED to be, it doesn't even deserve to be mentioned next to The Elder Scrolls nowadays.

I'm known to be the biggest SH fan around here, i think…..and i concur with Alien.

Americans and the suits at Konami have turned SH into a brain cell killing, insult to intelligence, Hollywood wannabe.

The new one looks god awful! The original Team Silent games were the most intelligent and artistic experiences in game. I recently read a Del Torro interview that echoed my thoughts here. He considers them some of the most well written, artistic experiences out there……Just can't believe what the suits at Konami have let happen.

Alienange: Considering I despise Elder Scrolls as being a directionless, outrageously boring series, and Silent Hill 2 remains one of my favorite games, I'll hold out hope for a great SH feature in GI. ūüėČ

Say it isn't so! I knew about your aversion to Fallout 3, but TES too? TES is open world RPG at it's best. It's the GTA of RPGs. It's what early players of rpgs in the style of Dungeons and Dragons, Ultima and Dragon's Quest always wanted! I mean what was the point of having the Thief class if you couldn't break into someone's house and do "thief stuff?"

TES embodies the very description of role playing.

No problem with SH2 being one of your favorites of course. That was one crazy good game. Since that time though, it's been a pretty bleak hope to get a new SH like that.

I didn't say it wouldn't be a great game. I'm sure it will be.

I tried to get into Morrowind. I tried desperately for 10 hours. I tried again in Oblivion. Tried even harder…didn't work.

By all rights, I should adore them. My only explanation is that I really do need a compelling story and something more interesting than standard hack 'n slash combat mechanics. Something interesting I've never seen before, like the Judgment Ring in Shadow Hearts or when I first played FFXII; that sort of hybrid style.

Maybe it just feels too empty. Too much like a MMO in that the entire purpose of playing is to level up, and that's it.

I love how you put all the Americans into one boat to blame, besides Konami as you mentioned. I'm American so don't put all of us in the spotlight if you don't know some of us. Mmk? Thank you.

I can't wait for skyrim, and I hope they've upgraded the gameplay for combat, maybe even included some finishing moves.

Silent Hill all the way. The new one really looks like it's going back to what makes the series great. Amazing environments and mind-numbing situations. Hopefully they'll stop trying to make it into an action game like the last SH.

I'll take both please. Well, that is if this new Silent Hill doesn't drop the ball.

Let's just hope Bethesda, upon finishing Skyrim, takes over responsibilities for Fallout 4. New Vegas was pretty good, but we just can't have Obsidian handling the franchise anymore.

Im with you on Bethesda heading back to Fallout. New Vegas, story wise and gameplay wise, is just as good as 3 but it is unplayable at times. Some of the bugs are just funny, but most cause a restart altogether.

I found SH2 much scarier than SH, though I should say that I played 2 first.

SH I mostly found frustrating (rather than scary) as I fought the clunky(er) controls; not at all saying it was a bad game, just that I thought SH2 was a more immersive experience.

meh, could not care less about Skyrim!
i stopped buying bethesda games when they forgot how to debug there games BEFORE they release them!
when they can release a game and it not be riddled with bugs than ill buy it.
cant wait for silent hill though, just, please for the love of god, please dont turn it into RE5 or alone in the dark!
tis were my favorite survival horror genres of the ps1 era, we only have one left so please dont destroy it!

Skyrim does look good actually… but again it depends what you are into… if I only I had more time and spare cash to splash on all these great titles… but alas I have to be picky.

Its nice to be able to play games over a longer period of time, and enjoy them properly, otherwise what is the point… I will probably get it, but at a later stage…

At this rate I can see my PS3 will be with me for 10 years, like peoples PS2's, as there will be a huge back catalog to get through… years of gaming to get through!

Q!

i did not say it looks bad, i said i stopped playing bethesda games when they forgot how to fix the bugs BEFORE the game releases.
how much you want to bet that this will release, and be the buggy mess fallout 3 and new vegas were?
im sick of bethesda giving the green light to games that clearly need a few more months polish!
i dont reward lazy developers, i reward developers who work there a$$ off to achieve perfection.
releasing a game breaking buggy game is like spitting in the consumers face.
i mean game breaking buggy, not buggy like a little slow down, or frame rate drops there not a big deal.
i mean bugs like games crashing, freezing, falling through worlds, getting stuck in objects, walking through walls, not being able to progress in a level because of a glitch.
experienced every one of those in new vegas, tis why i stopped playing it.

Alienange
Alienange

From what I've read, you reward lazy developers on a weekly basis.

New Vegas is a programming mess to be sure, but the core game of Fallout 3 was actually rather stable considering how old the engine is and the drastic changes they made to it for console release.

Seeing as how they're coming out with their own proprietary game engine for Skyrim, I'm very inclined to believe they've build it with consoles in mind.

I want something to scare me, but trying to play SH3 with that archaic control scheme did my head in. Maybe SH8 will be more user friendly.

As for Skyrim: I'll hopefully be too busy exploring this country at that point in time to bother about exploring a virtual one. When does the new SH drop?
Peace.

I can't remember on SH3, but i know on Silent Hill 2 in the options is this setting for 2D and 3D controls, onces i switched it , it was SO much easier, see if its on the options of SH3.

Lawless SXE

No, my main problem was that the movement direction was dictated by character heading, rather than the camera. A few other niggling issues as well.

I'll have to try it again some time soon, just to see if I can adjust to it.

Vivi_Gamer
Vivi_Gamer

Well i wasnt talking abotu the camera

2D action – When you move up he goes straight up.
3D action – Simular to the the old Tomb Raider games where Lara would spin around 360 degrees before moving forward.

I would love to look forward to a new Silent Hill, but i just can't, I just don't know if i can take that kind of rejection!

SH1-3 are essentially perfect games, i just can't fault them. but after then, well it was just a real shame. I hope the team developing Homecoming have learnt from and can release a game which is up to the standard of it's console.

Though i take it people have already see nwhat this Silent Hill looks like right, it was shown last year at E3, The one with the espace convict…

I've got Deadspace and will have Deadspace 2 but it's not even the same type of feeling as a quality Silent Hill game. Plus I like the story of Silent Hill games as well. The eerie feeling and the feeling you have that you're the only sane one around..

I still haven't gotten through Oblivion yet, but I've always enjoyed the Elder Scrolls games, so I'll be looking into this one, although I'll probably be waiting for the GOY edition to let Bethesda work out any bugs and get all the add-ons. It seems to be the best way to buy most of their games…although I couldn't wait for Fallout..lol

"There hasn't been a good SH since 2003. Just a bunch of lame attempts at trying to be scary"

This is my thought exactly, and if you were to ask me, SH is just one of those franchises that need to be put out to pasture.

"Considering I despise Elder Scrolls as being a directionless"

This excactly why I feel some PC(and arcade) games shouldn't be put onto a console…console-centeric gamers just don't have the patience or time to appreciate these titles. Overall as usual I see TES:Skyrim strength being on the PC due to the future mods and modding community.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Give me a goddamn break. My patience level is probably higher than anyone you know. That's hardly the reason I don't like Elder Scrolls; you might want to stop making assumptions about other people.

You're not God, although I know you think you are.

To me, saving the world has never been directionless. Hell, it's what I've been doing in gaming for years. But gaming has NOT always allowed me to do it MY way. TES is one of the few that does.
