Sony: Fiscal PS3 Sales Still On Track

Recently, Sony has been right in line with PlayStation 3 sales projections; never too low, never too high.

And as far as the rest of the company goes, Sony is going to finish the year with smiles on their faces. The electronic corporation posted profits of ¥31.1 billion ($372 million) during their third fiscal quarter , and they reached that number on the rising strength of the PS3. Their flagship gaming unit sold 3.5 million units worldwide and as a result, has allowed Sony to reaffirm their previous projection of 15 million for the fiscal year (which ends March 31, 2011). Even the less-than-expected 530,000 sales in November hasn't changed the forecast: "Sales at the end of the year are as we expected," Said Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kazuo Hirai. And if the PS3 does stay on track, it would mark another year of strong growth; Sony sold 13 million in the 2009 fiscal year, and 10.1 million in 2008. It currently sits at 41.6 million globally.

Maybe the reason Sony doesn't think the lackluster November will hurt PS3 sales is because Gran Turismo 5 , which launched November 24, will generate a hardware sales spike in December. Early retailer estimates says the game did indeed have a positive impact on PS3 sales, but we'll have to wait and see.

The list of exclusives for 2011 is just mind-boggling and it thrashes what 2008 till 2010 has to offer combined.

Know, it's a great year for PS3 owners next year. Never have I been this excited for a new year to come. These days I usually find myself dreading a new year. Don't want to get old! Blagh!

Good news. Now if there was a way to open my Country's (USA) eyes to the goodness that is the PS3.

Seriously. I don't get US gamers. all they care about is Call of Duty, Halo, Gears and Mass Effect. By the way, gotta say, after the PS3 Mass Effect demo, I'm even less impressed with that game. Ugly graphics, crappy framerate and pretty stupid story. It's the Matrix meets Starwars.

Yeah I bought ME2 for the PC when it came out earlier this year, because I absolutely adored the first game. I played through ME2 twice, and didn't even finish it the second time. I played through the first game about 8 times, then my Xbox broke and I bought a PS3.

ME2 stripped out almost all of the RPG goodness that ME1 had in it, and "enhanced" it so that it was more like a shooter. I understand changing the aiming and making it so if your reticule is on them you hit them.

But come on, almost no exploration, the cities were embarrassingly small compared to the first games, less than half the customization the first one had. No mods, not loot, not armour changes except for a couple useless pieces you could change that barely did anything to your stats. The biggest problem was that it didn't feel like ME, MEs combat was more open and less corridor shooter, this felt more like gears of war to me, with some powers thrown into the mix. I did like how each class had one special ability, Vanguard charge FTW. Oh well, heres hoping that ME3 will have more of ME1 thrown into the mix.

Jawknee –

I don't get them either. It's almost as if the US and UK gamers are brainwashed over the 360.

I could look past several of the issues with ME2 demo, but it seemed the voice acting was not as good as I was expecting. It actually sounded B worthy compared to GOW3.

xenris –

I got the feeling that ME2 was linear based on that demo, and it sounds like I am correct.

Us Americans are highly impressionable and you have to keep in mind that EVERYwhere you look on the streets, the TV, the magazines, your girlfriend's ass, there are Xbox ads. I get excited when I see a PS3 ad because they are few and far between. We basically let ads run our lives and do no research of our own.

That said, the World be bein more smart on the subject.

Yeah pontiac the game really is quite linear especially compared to the first one. If you can get your hands on that one I highly recommend it. Also the plot is leagues better than the second one, which at the end has you wondering what you actually accomplished and why you even went on the suicide mission.

The game boils down to running down corridors and recruiting characters then doing their loyalty missions. Thats it, and for the most part the loyalty missions are a drag, except for Garrus, his missions is pretty intense. Yes they are all slightly unique but some are just pathetic, Jacobs in particular.

The only redeeming character is Thane, he is a bad ass lizard assassin, with a heart of gold….you find the heart of gold part out if you play female Shepard 😛

That's good news for Sony. People who don't own a PS3 really don't know what they're missing. Free Internet browser, free PSN, Free Virtual world – Home, Games,Music,Movies, Streaming via Netflix, Blu-Ray, it truly is a multimedia gaming powerhouse. I think a lot of people haven't bought one because they still believe its a gaming device only. If only they knew.

@ Jawknee I downloaded the mass effect demo last night and it will be waiting for me when I get home from work. I am going to see if your "Star Wars meets the Matrix" evaluation holds true. The demo is usually a good indicator for me on whether I'll like the game.

I'm talking about the story. They even tried using a line right out of the Animatrix though tweaking it slightly, probably to avoid being accused of out right stealing it.

By the way, the reply button is your friend. 🙂

@Jawknee – please forgive my ignorance but I've never hit the reply button. Does it reply specifically to the last person or what? Don't know. Anyway, I've been very intrigued by Mass Effect 2. I hope its not that corny because I'm itching to buy a new game. Oh btw I love star wars and the matrix but a combination of such sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Don't listen to Jawknee, he's exaggerating. The story was ok, & the voice acting is definatly AAA worthy. Its an RPG in every sense of the word, a role-playing game, but it had the same fantastic narrative style of the linear UC2, with the 'active cinematic gameplay' to match.

However their were some cons. The screen-tearing was enough to be notice-able, in cutscenes atleast. The hit-boxes were abit off for me, which is demoralising in such a action-themed game when your looking for that perfect headshot. Also it might have been just me, but the dark areas were too dark. There were some gamma correction options though I didn't bother with em.

All in all its a must-buy, judging from the demo.

ME2 is definitely a hit/miss depending on your preferences. But all in all it's pretty good. (At least for PC)

It's definitely nothing like Uncharted 2. Neither in quality nor anything else really. To be honest, it isn't really fair comparing the two. They're very dissimilar aside from your character using a gun.

Jawknee
Jawknee

Liam, It is NOT an RPG in every sense of the word. It is a shooter with RPG elements. If you think it's a pure RPG, you don't know what an RPG is friend.

Also, it is just my opinion that the story is full of cheese and kick backs to mediocre sci-fi flicks. The stolen line from the Matrix says it all for me. The game is massively over hyped and full of technical issues that shouldn't be present in a game you're about to spend $60 bucks on. He can take my opinion or leave it. So chill out.

Ludicrous_Liam

@Underdog
The way the story is told is definatly on level with UC2. I felt engaged the same way I did playing UC2, & trust me thats comming from UC2's number 1 fan (as proof I'm currently on my 20th playthru…yup. I could tell you the story word for word right now.)

Ludicrous_Liam
Ludicrous_Liam

I am chilled. What's wrong with a heated debate? 😛

When I say '..in every sense of the word', I mean it literally. It's a role-playing game is it not? Forgive me if I miss-understand the meaning, but I thought choosing what you say etc was the definition of RPG, like fallout 3.

Underdog15
Underdog15

Well, the RPG genre at it's core is almost impossible to define, anyways. I don't really feel ME2 is strictly an RPG anymore than some Zelda games are. Although, it does have more RPG elements than Zelda.

I dunno, I have sort of been thinking the last few years have brought on a "Shooter RPG" genre to the mix. ME2 and Fallout could be indicators of that. Afterall, we do have "Action RPG" and "Turn-based RPG" and all sorts of other types of RPG's. And none of them really resemble another. Kingdom Hearts is nothing like Final Fantasy, for example.

I dunno… every game nowadays you play the "role" or a particular person or three. So that doesn't define it. All games have stories, so that doesn't define it either. And just because you can "level up" something, shouldn't be the pure indicator of an RPG.

No. Rather, I believe most games have taken on elements of the RPG because of the immense success of the genre in the PS1 days. Now everything has RPG elements. And why shouldn't they when RPG's used to be so dominate?

So I guess, the true definition of an RPG is a game that takes on ALL elements of the RPG and makes it the primary focus. One of the only and main reasons I hesitate to call ME an RPG (although I am not unwilling to do so yet) is the style of combat. There really isn't a whole lot of strategy as far as I can tell. Certainly not to the same degree as other action RPG's. Even Fable (I only played the first one)! Games like Demon Souls and Dragon Age are action RPG's, but you need to level up and develop mad strategies to succeed. ME you can do well just by being good at shooters. (As far as I can tell. Maybe I'm just having an exceptionally easy time) Even the Zelda games were difficult and trying forcing a degree of mastery.

So to me, the gameplay is a major factor in an age where all games have RPG elements. Decision making certainly helps ME's case in making the character your own. But even there you have to be careful. I mean, in CoD I can make my class very unique to my needs. I can even alter my appearance and emblem. VERY RPG'y. But CoD is certainly no RPG.

Anyways… it's pretty subjective these days. I know what I feel an RPG is, but there's no way to absolutely label something RPG. I guess you just have to "know"…

I liked the ME2 demo, basically it's Dragon Age in space with fewer RPG elements. As such I was able to forgive the sometimes choppy framerate cuz that's a Bioware trademark.

edit: I still won't pay the gomers full price for it though.

@jawknee
Your exagerating about the framerate and graphics. The game didn't look bad, it's like Red Dead…nice at a distance, but once you start paying attention you realize it's not UC, GT5 premium grade, GoWIII type graphics. Now what shocked me was how corny the story was and how 'meh' the voice acting was. Everyone speaks/move in a uncomfortable fashion and the shooting is mediocre. And I agree…this isn't a RPG, not even a western RPG…it's bioshock in thirdperson. I will still pick it up, but I expected epic music and heroic voice acting…everyone sounds like freshman college students except for Illusive man. SO far…this looks like a very nerdy game. I have a geek side, but this screams 'lets dress up for the convention'.

@World

I hope Dragon Age isn't like this ME demo because I know someone is giving it to me on Christmas. I hope the story is good.

Sorry to inform you but Dragon Age has terrible graphics and a horrendous frame rate. The load times are also pretty bad,
On the other hand the story is pretty good and the gameplay is pretty solid. The best part is the dialog options, which can be very fun, and the various prologue choices.
Ultimately the game is fun if you can get past the graphics

Well, my upbringing was that 9 out of 10 games were broken in some way but we played em anyway. So I can totally forgive all the problems in Dragon Age because overall it is just a great RPG with lots of interesting lore behind it and the ability to cut your own path through the world they set up. I like that ability to make decisions that shape the entire world, and your ending will be well customized to what you did and how you handled yourself.

I liked the demo very much… the graphics were great… the screen tearing did not bother me that much.

What bothered me were some of the blocky shadowing I picked up, testament to the fact that the PS3 is struggling with an aging GPU… unless an engine is highly highly optimised for the target platform, like the proprietary engines used in Uncharted and Killzone.

Nonetheless, it was a great spectacle to watch the cut scenes and play the game thus far.

Will get it after a price drop…

With Sony's strongest set of exclusives slated for 2011, they really need to use advertising a little more to get the word around to any Xbot who thinks he made a good purchase.

Again, I also think they need to look into making a $199 PS3 model.

Hello PsxE fam. Christmas is rearing in, and I wish all of you a good one.

What a great year for the sony playstation and corporation itself. I will always support and back any entity that really deserves the shine.

It's like watching the underdog gradually rise to fame after years of doubt and ridicule. I already have bought a 250gb hdd playstation slim, and I am going to purchase another one next year to support them more.

One good marketing strategy would be to bundle all exclusives with the playstation 3. And any exclusive that supports move, bundle it with the move accessory.

And finally, a good strategy would be to create various color schemes for the playstation. Like a god of war red, or little big planet blue, or even a orange one with black details. Just a thought.

This will excite any/all potential buyers. I mean, because hey, most buyers give in to almost anything that looks attractive and slick.

It is time to build an even stronger sony community across all boards,(gaming, mobile, development,tv,etc), and take over the world of media.

Not saying any names, but it seems like a large demographic of U.S. gamers are brainwashed and puppet like. Let's wake them up!

Happy Holidays man!

It definitely has been a great year. Heavy Rain, GOWIII, Modnation Racers, GT5, White Knight Chronicles, etc.

I have no faith in the majority of US gamers. Intelligence and overall charisma has gone down since the 1990s. The new wave of youngters are inferior beings, imo.

I'll just keep enjoying these great games, they're the ones missing out in the end.

Need4Speed11_11

Most definitely man!

Even though sony's playstation 3 does need more innovative marketing(check my last post), I do applaud their humility.

This company does not boast or brag at all. Just the way they carry themselves is highly respectable.

But in the same breath, they need to kick it up a notch and break into a slim jim! We need some fun, and attention grabbing marketing to really strike while the iron is hot.

And through my eyes, this iron will remain hot for a very L….O……N…………….G, time!

It is always good to see the more deserving get that shine and success that is much needed in this industry. A breath of fresh air to rejuvenate not only the industry, but gamers all over.

Lastly, Scarecrow, i appreciate your reply. Just reading over the games you have listed only strengthen my faith in the year to come. Here is my gaming schedule for 2011. What are you guys most anticipated games for next year?

List:

1.) Little Big Planet 2

2.) Killzone 3_Move Support

3.) Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: i will be furious if they exclude my boy Ken from this ;(.

4.) Crysis 2: Just the physics and awwing graphics are enough to anticipate this. Although, with KZ3, it may just stay in the plastic for a while until I can get to it legitimately.

5.) Dead Space 2: Hehe

6.) Resistance 3

7.) Uncharted 3

Honorable Mentions: Mortal Kombat, Infamous 2 & Twisted Metal.

The games are in no particular order, I can't wait for them all.

Game On!

Predictions…I've long predicted that the PS3 will sell at least 100 million units, and I stand by that. In fact, thinking abut how the PS1, PS2 and PSP saw redesigns and price reductions in their lives, here is my prediction for the future.

White PS3 goes on sale next year around the world. In the autumn of 2011, there will be a slimmer PS3 along with a $50 price cut. In 2012, limited editions of PS3s in Blue and silver, and possibly one other color will hit the stores. In 2013, the $250 price will include a Move starter pack, and the PS3 will receive it's final price reduction to $199.99. I think this will happen in November 2013, the 7th anniversary of the launch of the PS3. At the same time this is announced (at the Tokyo Game Show – or perhaps E3) Sony will announce the PS4 for 2014.

OK, that's all guess work based on the history of previous PlayStations. But it sounds reasonable.

I don't think that US gamers will 'get it' until Microsoft bows out.

Definitely a good year for PS3 & i'm expecting it to only go stronger in 2011 which is looking like the pinnacle year for PS3's exclusives. 2011 really is looking like "Year of the PS3"

On a side note, i noticed some of you lads mentioned Mass Effect 2 having bad framerate? Well i haven't played the PS3 demo so i can't judge but the 360 version runs beautifully so i hope it's just a case of ironing out the bugs & not a case of a gimped PS3 version. But i doubt BioWare would F it up.

IMO, Mass Effect 2 was game of the year. It looked good, it played well & you actually gave a sh!t about the characters. The fact that the story was your own & the fate of your characters was in your own hands made it so enjoyable to play. The voice acting for the most part is fine; fem shepherd is voiced well & Garrus, Miranda (Dig the Aussie accent), Thane etc, do a solid job too but i can't say the same for the meat head male shepherd unfortunately.

Great game, here's hoping those that didn't play the 360 version love & enjoy it on PS3.

You know, if they sell 15 million during this financial year, on top of the 13 million last year and 10 million the year before and the PS3 unit sales before that, they will exceed 50 million units within 5 years of launch. If Sony manages another 15 million next year, and then 13 million and then 10 and then 8 and then 6 and then… That's assuming that 15 million units a year is it peak year.

Remember, the PS3 has seen year on year increased sales despite the deepest worldwide recession since the 1930s. The economy is getting better and 2011 could be even better than 2010 for Sony. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Sony will sell 100+ million PS3s over the life of the PS3. With the recession slowing everything for a 18-24 months, the PS3's designed lifespan of 10 years will stand it in good stead as this console generation looks set to last a year or so longer than the last.

All in all, with so many excellent games in 2011, and just about every other entertainment need taken care of (3D, HD, BluRay, DVD, CD, downloadable video, web based video, web browsing, digital images, wireless networking, etc…), the PS3 could be a very attractive proposition for a home entertainment hub in 2011/2012.

Considering all of this, 100 million unit sales is well within the reach of the PS3, and although I still doubt it will catch the record established by the PS2, I do think it has a good chance of getting well beyond 100 million units.

If Sony manages another 15 million next year, and then 13 million and then 10 and then 8 and then 6 and then… it will easily sell past 100 million units in it's life. That's assuming that 15 million units a year is it peak year, so it could be better.

This was a good year for the ps3 but not the best. It seems that people where I live are more aimed at kinect since they are all blind and don't see what kinect really is. They all think that it is a whole new technology even when it is based on the eye toy. It just pisses me off that people are so blind these days with xbox 360. Ps3 had a great year but too me it wasn't the best. It just simply, didn't move too much from 2009. What I want sony to do for 2011 is to get it right with the framerate and anti aliasing. Just 2 main features I need the system to perform better at next year and I will be a happy camper. I just simply can't enjoy games unless they are ar 60fps and no jagged lines detracting away from the final product. Next year we'll show xbots that the ps3 can achieve with killzone 3.

They shouldn't even have thought of releasing a demo with crappy framerate!!!! WHY ON EARTH? But yes mass effect 2 didn't nail the nail on the coffin correctly for this one.

i just wished sony would spend more on dam advertising!
i almost shat myself when i first walked into target in Hawaii there were ps3 posters all over the place!
got back to the hotel, turned the TV on and first thing i saw was a ps3 ad.
a ps3 ad on TV?
i really do need glasses!
if there selling the way they do without any advertisement here, than imagine how they would with some!
they advertise there TVs like theres no tomorrow, so why not the ps3?
when i bought my 3D HX800 last night JB had massive sales on everything, 15% off TVs so sony had posters all over the shops advertising there new TVs.
so how many posters of ps3s?
NONE!
