Ubisoft Confirms Splinter Cell Trilogy

The high-definition remakes just keep coming, and that's a good thing for PlayStation 3 owners.

It's even better when we're talking about games that were simply best played on the Xbox (in comparison to the PS2 versions). Ubisoft has revealed that a Splinter Cell Trilogy for the PS3 is scheduled to arrive next year. Including HD reincarnations of Splinter Cell , Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory , stealth aficionados ought to be plenty happy with the announcement. Ubisoft has also delivered the Prince of Persia Trilogy and we know about the new Tomb Raider Trilogy from Crystal Dynamics…so I'm sorta thinking we can get a Suidoden Collection in HD. Of course, there's really no reason for high-definition for such games but…well, one can hope, no? As for SC, I've played every last entry (except for Conviction ) and it's one of my all-time favorite franchises. Those who call it a "poor man's MGS" haven't played it.

I play MGS for the story and characters; I play SC for the authentic stealth gameplay. There's a very big difference. I don't think any SC was as good as either of the last two MGS installments but then again…few games are. If you missed out on the SC experiences last generation, this trilogy would be a perfect excuse to catch up.

OKay, so do we know if these HD remakes are based on the Xbox versions yet?

Chaos Theory I think is the best in the series. BUt I agree with Ben, that when it comes to stealth simulation, SC is king. I played through the first SC several times and found it rewarding to learn the intricacies of it's design. With the more time you invest into understanding it's mechanics, the more rewarding and interesting it becomes. Also, the knowledge you gain carries with you into follow up games. Where you can appreciate the subtle upgrades made to Sam's abilities. Pandora Tomorrow to me felt like a relatively modest update over the first SC, but Chaos Theory felt like a full-blown over-hall that was uber awesome.

The little of what I've played from Conviction left me somewhat wanting. Sam is like this one man army now. This near re-boot makes Sam out to be a fully realized hollywood style powerhouse. It's cool, but I felt just a little betrayed by some of the streamlining. Perhaps I'll give it another shot someday, maybe when a beefed up PS3 release makes it's way to the market later in 2011. It'd sit comfortably next to the HD Remakes =)

Chaos Theory is the best in the series, IMO. Something felt off in Double Agent and I haven't played Conviction yet (although I might get it for Christmas).

The first Splinter Cell was memorable for me. 🙂

Yeah, Double Agent didn't quite do it for me either. It didn't strike me as a strong follow up to Chaos Theory. I think it was also designed by the Shanghai team and not the Montreal team who did 1 and 3.

I want this. HD collections in general are awesome, but a SC pack? That's epic.

Not sure "epic" is the right word here. Having to fight through a herd of velociraptors to obtain your copy might qualify, but the game itself, just awesome.

Too bad we will probably never get SE's head out of their asses long enough for a FF trilogy, X, X-2, and XII in HD. That would be the epicness of the epic.

I could give two poops about Splinter Cell.

Ben Conviction is pretty damn good, hell it was better than good, I seriously hope you get to check it out while it might not no MGS4 it's still awesome in it's own right.

I heard it barely clocked in at 5 hours.

That did not stop it from being a really good game. Vanquish wasn't exactly all that long either but it was still fun as hell.

Vanquish was a good 9 or 10 hours for me.

If Conviction is only 5, I'll be disappointed, especially because the SC titles in this trilogy are a good 10-12 hours apiece.

I just hope they add a foul language filter to the PS3 version of Conviction. It makes KZ2 look pretty tame by comparison.

@Ben, this is true, but Vanquish story was so tacked on, but then again I guess when the gameplay is is super fun it really over shadows everything else. well if anything it at least deserves a rent man.

Xbox'ers have to face the sad truth that in order to release a trilogy like this for 360, Ubi-soft would need to fork over 3 discs worth of royalty fees to MS for this one budget priced SKU.
I suppose they could see a LIVE-only release… but when you start thinking about how much money one pays per MB for MS's exorbitant HDD storage costs… it sort of would place a damper on the prospect from a value based POV… at least for me.

hearing stuff like this is great. I might not get it but it means that there is a larger chance more games will be remade in HD. I really hope for a MGS 1 and 2 and a new JetMoto. I've said this multiple times before but I really, really want to play MGS 1 and 2 in HD, new voice acting but the same story line. JetMoto would just be simply awesome. I'm sure we all have our favorite games from the PS2 and PS1 that you want a remake of. Hopefully we will get a lot more remakes.
Heres too MGS 1 and 2

I will definitely be picking this up. I loved Splinter Cell more than MG. One reason for that was that I use to be a big Xboxer.

I sure would love to see a more PS2 exclusives though in HD remakes as I only had a PS2 for about 2 months. I missed out on a lot of great games.

You know what scratch that they should just go back and make All the great PSone & PS2 games in hd seeing how they took away our precious backward compatibility.-_-.(Shame on you Sony, knowing them they probably had all this planned out from the very beginning, IT'S A CONSPIRACY I TELL YOU)

My ultimate dream come true would be an HD trilogy for Silent Hill 2, 3 & 4. For god sake make it happen already! HD trilogies for Devil May Cry, MGS, Hitman & SSX wouldn't hurt either.

I am all for these remakes seeing as though PS3 Slims don't have backwards compatibility & PS2 games these days look like rubbish. Give the classics a lick of next gen sheen, release them at a fairly acceptable price point & you will generate sales.

Good move.

Given the excitement over this here, I admit that I may have been rash about my earlier sentiments about this series. I'm willing to try anything, and these collections are always good value. I wondering if this is hinting at a PS3 re-release for Conviction, or perhaps an entirely new Splinter Cell game, because that would further swing me towards picking this up.
Peace.

I've played Conviction on 360, and to me it just didn't feel like the Splinter Cell of old, they almost completely stripped the game of the stealth element altogether & adding massive indicators on the environment ruined any sense of realism & visually, the game failed to live up to the clearly doctored screenshots that the developer were touching themselves over for all this time post release. The original Splinter Cell,Chaos Theory & Pandora Tomorrow were truly memorable. Conviction imo does not belong in their league.

Don't get me wrong, it is a solid game but it's a case of lost identity compared to the three epics before it.

Temjin001

The "snap-to" auto cover component felt too automated for my liking. It's one thing to have a game with scripted climbing leaps(Uncharted/Enslaved) and jumps (Enslaved), but another to have a game move and control your guy for you to get to cover. It's just too much. Nonetheless, it's more of a minor gripe. And I tend to like to nit-pick things when it comes to gaming, I dunno why. =p

I just remember reading dev interviews that seemed to speak to the impatient casual-action-hungry-gamer as an impetus for Conviction's design.

But what about the core fans who've followed the series for years? You'd rather hope those fans will make concessions for the pacing and feel of the game to respond to more mainstream modernized trends in game design? But I guess it seems that's what most every franchise does these days, but it's sad when it's not so transparent in the case of Conviction. At least my fighting games, like Tekken, have stayed pretty true to their form since the beginning.

So far I own every game that's been included in one of these HD compilations except GOW 2 (and most of those people have proposed), so I can't really justify re-buying (much less replaying) them. I think they're great deals for anyone who hasn't played them.

If they ever announce one with games I don't own, I would be very inclined to buy one.

edit: For instance, I own R&C: UYA and R&C: D, but I would be tempted to buy an R&C compilation.

Could never get into the original Splinter Cell games. I could never wrap my head around a badass special agent only having a weak elbow for hand to hand situations. I really like Conviction, though.

Someone remind me, but was there any online-part in SP: Chaos Theory on the PS2 version?

If memory serves me correctly you could play co-op campaign & various multiplayer modes via system link, whether the servers are still up i am not so sure. If they're still kicking I'd imagine it would be difficult finding other players online. But you never know.

On the inevitable MGS HD trilogy, i do hope they plan on remaking the true original MGS1 from PSone instead of Gamecubes Twin Snakes. TS was good, but the fact the epic music from the original was taken out & some of the script was altered annoyed me. I did enjoy the Grey Fox slaughter scene that wasn't evident in the PS1 version however but nothing touches the boss theme, that was truly epic music.

Yeah! I remember they had local coop, but not online multiplayer (the Xbox version on other hand, had this). But if they multiplayer for the PS2 version to, I`m kinda hoping they will bring it over for HD collection 🙂

And yes, I want a MGS (PSone) remake to. But that`s never gonna happen 😛 Just wishfull thinking! Though, it would sell like crazy if they ever realesed one!
But Twin Snakes on Gamecube I could never finish. The controller was just horrible 😛 But I did hear that they changed the voice for Grey Fox and some other minor changes here and there 😛

Prince of Persia and then Splinter Cell, damn Ubisoft is doing some fine job, others should follow, *cough* DMC, FF, Ace Combat *cough*.

And I just realized there's no Halo HD remake.

EDIT:No wait, scratch that, not even a single HD remake for the 36o.
