Tomb Raider Trilogy Coming Soon

We've heard about the new Tomb Raider in development, and you know what might be the perfect lead-in to the fresh installment…?

A high-definition tribute trilogy, of course. According to TombRaiderBIZ , it seems the German branch of Amazon.com is listing a Tomb Raider Trilogy package for the PlayStation 3. It includes a few last-generation titles, including Legend and Anniversary , along with Tomb Raider Underworld , and it has a European release date of March 22, 2011. And athough Square-Enix hasn't confirmed a release date, they have confirmed the trilogy's existence.  According to a spotted Tweet from Karl Stewart, Global Brand Director for Crystal Dynamics:

"Yes, it’s official. #TombRaider PS3 ‘Trilogy’ pack coming in the new year. Full details next week. Watch this space."

Publishers have really gotten into re-releasing popular games in high-definition format; we already have the God of War Collection and the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection shows up next year, too. The gameplay mechanics will obviously remain the same – and critics did have a few problems with the gameplay in those Tomb Raider titles – but there's nothing wrong with Lara in HD. And we're definitely interested to learn more about the new project.

For the most part, we imagine it'd be a fairly popular little package. Besides, three games in one is rarely a bad thing.

I'm curious if TR: Legends will be the 360 version. PS users never got a chance to play the "next-gen" version of that game back in the day. Anyhow, this is pretty cool. I feel like Sony fans have sort of been getting the shaft on the TR stuff for some time now. Underworld had two exclusive game content downloads on 360. TR: Anniversary never got a PS3 release. And Legends never made it out PS3-side, either. Plus, the arcade TR game had features that 360 fans got first.
Those priorities seem odd seeing that the majority of TR games have appeared on Playstation historically.

If PS3 gets shafted on the reboot in any way I might get a little mad.

That's kinda neat but those games weren't so fantastic. I'd actually prefer they reskin and hi-def Tomb Raiders I-III.

I am looking forward to the new one with young lara, though saddened to hear they won't be working the sex symbol angle.

That what I was hopping for…

You want to have the clunky movement of TR1?

I don't get the negativity toward Legend and Anniversary. Both were vastly better than any earlier TR thanks to improved tech.

Underworld was apparently rushed and buggy, but the Crystal Dynamics TRs were extremely well received before that one.

A remade trilogy would use the engine of Legend, like anniversary does, so there would be no clunk.

I want MGS 1 and 2 remake and a new JetMoto where the second left off. That would be epic.
I popped in JetMoto 2 in today… ah good memories :).

There was a MGS1 remake called MGS1: Twin Snakes (Gamecube). Pretty well done (though I prefer the ps1 version).

Jet Moto 2, man that game was wild.

I'd rather have a remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2 from the MSX. That would be a huge undertaking from Kojima studios but I enjoyed the hell out of those from the Subsistence package.

And Snake needs more games in his youth, my only gripe with 4.

Damnit Ben now you got me thinking Tomb Raider, which made me think Uncharted and how there's no Uncharted on PSP so I just hit up ebay and found myself buying TR Anniversary.

Oh well, I'll just have to suffer through some of Lara's shimmy 🙂

Let's hope so, I see no reason why not if ND is looking to expand the franchise.

Meh, good if it's below $30. Tomb Raider 1-3 were the bests.

This news story caused me to dust off Underworld. I never beat it. But man, the camera is so terrible. It strains my eyes so bad because of all the judder. Hopefully the fix that.

What kind of useless trilogy pack is THIS?? I thought for sure we'd be reading something about the classic games coming to the PS3. This seems completely pointless to me. If you didn't make money with these games the first time, what do you possibly hope to accomplish by packing them all together??

All three might already be on PSN, but that's not the same as some nicely redone graphics now is it.

Um, he was just hoping for the better games in this trilogy, like the actual original trilogy.

Second Classics HD collection that I'm not interested in. The first is the Splinter Cell one, if anyone cares. Good to see that the range is expanding though, for those of us who missed out on the PS2 era.
Peace.

It's already been hinted at, but not REALLY confirmed. Still, this is close enough.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
im really liking these ps2 remakes, some are more fun than full priced ps3 games!
been playing the PoP collection since it released, still trying to get the last plat.
sly cooper trilogy is good too, just really freaking frustrating with the limited lifes.
die five times and thats it you have to start the whole level all over a freaking gain!
nothing pisses me off more than having to do the same sh*t over and over again.

These PS2 re-releases are getting silly if you ask me. They should have just kept the PS2 compatibility function the older models have. I's fine to release the games on the PS Store like the XBOX marketplace, but the once they have so far are so overpriced.

On that note i see they are also releasing PS3 games to download, Assassins Creed 1 is a available to download, on discs in stores it is now platinum (Greatest Hits), meaning it seels for half the original retail price, though on the PS Store it is about 3/4's of the original retail price, which is absurd because you could even buy AC1 preowned for under 5 pounds or 10 dollars.

I'm just greatful i have an old PS3 which is compatible with PS2 games, i would feel quite cheated if i had to buy them all again. The 'HD' upgrade is not a selling point to me, as PS2 games upscaled on the PS3 look fantastic.

Though one thing i would like to see is MGS2 and MGS3 actually put in widescreen, for a game so focused on cinematic value i can't believe they made the games for 4:3, It's not like its becuase they're old to, Jak and Dexter 1 had the option for either aspect ratio and that was far earlier than even MGS2.

I think that a good number of publishers will latch onto the Classics HD range with mediocre titles that they want to eke a few more cents out of. But to say it's getting silly is, well… silly. Thus far there have been six collections either released or announced. It's not like we're being flooded with them. Not yet anyway.

I do agree that playing the PS2 discs on the 60GB model is just as good. Trophies and HD aren't necessary, but the fact that they are releasing compilations of games that may not be as easy to find nowadays is enough to sway my thoughts. If persuasion is needed, take a look at the ICO/SotC collection, and have a look at the prices that those games are going for on Ebay.
Peace.

Hey, if companies want to spend the money to release these more power to them….There is no need for us to criticize them. If we want the HD upgrade, or we never played the PS2 games (I never played Sly and looking to buy the upgraded package) then this is great! If HD is not important to you, which is fine, then stick with the PS2 games if you have that option. The key here is "option" just like having the option between dvd and blue-ray. I for one am enjoying these collections…I had both GOW and GOW2 on PS2 and traded them in and bought the collection and looking forward to the ICO/SOTC remakes!
