Well, this is interesting.

Many role-playing fans love Mass Effect and both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners are looking forward to the third installment, set to release next year. PS3 owners will also get ME2, which will arrive on Sony's machine in January complete with a bunch of extra content. But did you realize ME2 is similar to ME3 in a way you might not have expected…? According to a recent BioWare podcast , both ME2 PS3 and ME3 use the same engine:

"We’ve actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and use that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content and the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put them in the Mass Effect 3 engine. And that‘s what we are actually delivering."

So come January 18, when you're playing ME2 on your PS3, you should know you're playing a game that uses the same engine as ME3, which you'll see at a later date. Well, that's the upside of being forced to wait almost a year for a game, right? And we won't have to wait again; EA has already confirmed the simultaneous multiplatform release of the upcoming entry.  Are you one of many who are on the sci-fi bandwagon created by BioWare?

If I like the demo, then I'll plan on getting it right after I beat Dead Space 2.

But if they are using the same assets as ME2 there really wont be a difference outside of the optimizations, right? It will look and play the same, it will just do it more efficiently.

I have no doubt the textures and art assets are the same, but that doesn't mean it rules out significant upgrades to performance , lighting dynamics, and post processing effects.

Though, I would still assume that the 360 may enjoy some obscure visual advantages of it's own once the game is put under the microscope, but at least we can already tell that the PS3 version will enjoy several unique advantages of it's own, which may help it be a better all around package more than it already is.

I really want this but how long before it's cheap? The xbox version is under $20 now and it's not even a year old. I guess I'll wait and see.

IGN has some comparison videos of Mass Effect 2 and Xbox and PS3 and the PS3 version does look a bit better. Its more colorful and vibrant.

Wow, didn't see this coming *thinks Bioware is cool*. The flat lighting of ME2 definitely caught my attention before this IGN comparison vid (especially when going from ME2 to Uncharted:DF). And to see that they addressed the biggest visual weakness of the game, I'm quite pleased.
But like Oxvial, I'm curious about the performance end. ME2 cleaned up all the screen tearing issues from the first game, and I hope the PS3 version is v-sync'd too.

It looks like that, watched the video the cinemas difference is very brutal, kinda FF13 cinemas comparative on 360.

The frame rate looked okay to me. I didn't notice any screen tearing either.

The more I read and see about ME2 for the PS3, the more I am getting convinced on getting it. This version of the game is more like Bioware's love letter to the PS3 community for making us miss the first installment and the long wait for the second. This game would rock!

When is Two Worlds II supposed to come out? I saw a retail copy earlier when I was looking for the Uncharted 2 GOTY version. I thought it isn't coming out until next year? And yes, it's the PS3 version I saw. LOL

I really think Bioware is proving to be a more standout PC/multi-console dev.
Dragon Age, for example, showed how they put the effort into doing some optimizing for each (360 and PS3) hardware characteristic. The PS3 version sported better texture filtering and some higher res textures (the game needed all the help it could get in that department). Whereas, the 360 version had a more stable frame-rate and 2xMSAA. Personally, I'm typically more of a performance oriented guy. But it's good to know neither version could be considered superior, and Bioware takes the time to do more than the usual dev.

Even if it doesn't its still a good thing. 🙂

Look at the IGN comparisons. You can see a difference.

D1P for me… Don't care for Dead Space 2 and can wait for Killzone 3 as I'm not into multiplayer…

Mass Effect 2 is just the story based RPG lite adventure that I am looking for.

Count me in!

I hope they get Me 1 for the ps3, because dead rising 2 didn't feel rigth being on ps3 when dr 1 was on 360.

Not going to happen unfortunately, but to make up for it the major story points are going to be included on the disc as an interactive comic, so you can make key decisions and be filled in on the happenings before you get into the actual game.

Dead Rising 2 felt bad bc it was a bad game, it's a shame because it has a lot of potential.

Also no dlc for ps3? the heck is wrong with capcom.

Nice, this kinda sorta points to Mass Effect 3 being nice and stable since the engine is good enough for a commercial release already.

So, does that mean that we'll see any improvements that Bioware has made for ME3, in this. I'm referring to lighting, physics, perhaps even slight gameplay tweaks? The graphics probably won't be improved much, considering that they're using the same assets, but it's good to know that we'll get a massively upgraded version as a result of our wait. I'm still on the fence about this one though. Backlog too big, and too many other, more high priority games out and coming.
Peace.

It could also make it easier to patch in any optimizations they make while building ME3 over the next year, since the base engine is the same.

Best part of that news is that if we don't enjoy the engine when me2 for ps3 comes out we know to just go ahead and skip me3. Hopefully it's good tho.

That sounds great, I already ordered have ME2 for my 360 though. I don't use it as much as I use to and I never actually buy games for it that often. I'm starting to feel bad for it, so I'll just get the ME games for the 360.

Oh yeah for anyone out their who also owns a 360 wal-mart is selling ME2 for $10!!! I'm serious you should check it out before its to late, here is the link.

By the way, have you've seen the (I'm changing the subject) the kollectors and the tornament edition of mortal kombat?

I'm aware it was posted a few days or a week ago, peace.

Maybe I have to finish the first ME. I don't know… I didn't like the dune buggy stuff. It was weird and very non-rpg. The characters seemed quite cool though. I just don't see myself reading a comic and then jumping into part 2.

Oxvial

If u are going to to play the first do it on pc and put the same decisions on the interactive Ps3 comic , 360 version of ME1 sucks.

Nynja

It took me a couple restarts on this game to actually appreciate it. The story is what really makes the first game good. The gameplay is a bit weak and buggy from my play experience. I'm almost tempted to not finish the 360 version and just wait for ME2 on the PS3.

Hopefully ME2 gameplay takes cues from Dragon Age and has a better interface. The menu screens were just plain awful.

Alienange

@ Oxvial – Didn't think of that when I bought the 360 version. Probably should have too. When I end up with ME2 on PS3 I think I'll do like you say. That's a smart idea about the comic.

@ Nynja – I actually read today that Bioware has updated the controls for the PS3 but if you don't like them you can go back to the 360 controls. Weird huh? Maybe it'll be better for us? Hope so.

This is, in my opinion, the best game of this generation. This is THE ultimate RPG series in my opinion. PS3 fans should be freaking out with joy that Mass Effect 2 is coming to PS3 in a few weeks. Where's the love and respect?
