You may have caught the teaser trailer when watching the Spike TV Video Game Awards this past weekend and now, EA has made it official with the press release.
Electronic Arts has announced SSX: Deadly Descents , in development at EA Canada for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Apparently, there's actually a wee bit of story in this one; "players will explore the story of a team who seek to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet." Okay, so that doesn't mean there's much of a "story." Whatever. It's SSX ! From the Himalayas to Antarctica, we'll tackle the most harrowing hills in the world and the key is to survive…the second key is to "look good doing it." Said EA Sports president Peter Moore:
"An entire genre was born from the original SSX a decade ago, and it’s time to reboot one of the most popular franchises of all-time in an unpredictable and unexpected way. Fans have been begging for this since the launch of this generation of consoles, and we have an experience that will be worth the wait. This franchise has always been about racing, tricks, characters and fun – SSX: Deadly Descents will deliver all of that, and more, on a global scale, with rich online experiences, and with the sense of adventure never before imagined on a snowboard."
This is one sports franchise that definitely needed to return. It was one of the most revered titles in the land when it launched alongside the PS2 back in 2000 and successive iterations were also warmly received. Things sort of tailed off, though, and we haven't heard from SSX in a while…thankfully, it's back. Yay!
