When it comes to designers making games exclusively for the PlayStation 3, gamers and critics alike notice the difference between such projects and standard multiplatform efforts.

The reason? Teams like Guerrilla Games are technically capable of unleashing more and more of the PS3's power. In speaking with 1Up , Killzone 3 managing director Herman Hulst talks about several topics of particular interest to fans of the franchise. Firstly, he does confirm split-screen co-op in one of his answers, as you can see on the second page. Secondly, he talks about how they've implemented 3D, and how the feature shouldn't impact the game's frame rate; Hulst says they've "found a lot of power." Thirdly, there's plenty of discussion about the Helghast, simply because they'll be more in the limelight this time around. But going back to that "finding extra power subject," Hulst responded as follows to the question, "Is the PS3 so complicated that all that extra power was waiting to be found inside?"

"Sheer optimization. We have a very talented technology team. They just kept hammering away at it. They just found more space and unleashed more power, basically."

Then, when they asked if the team is sharing this knowledge with other studios, Hulst replied:

"Sure, yeah. The tech directors in particular. They regularly talk and share concepts. People always think we share engines, and that's not so much the case, because we're making very different games. We're the team that makes the FPS. You can't just exchange an engine, but you can converse and exchange concepts. I think on that level, the biggest chunk of collaboration happens."

We've often heard of Sony's exclusive studios working hand-in-hand in terms of technical assistance; you may recall Sucker Punch talking about how they've learned a great deal from Naughty Dog. Perhaps there was evidence of that learning in Sucker Punch's excellent inFamous … But anyway, considering the rock solid beta and the team behind KZ3, one just has to assume it's going to be pretty darn good.

Developers like Suckerpunch and Polyphony Digital are masters of their craft, but to me Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games seem to be pushing the limits of the PS3 without any noticeable side effects.

I have to respectfully disagree. Graphics and tech-wise, Sony Santa Monica is the most capable developer on PS3, IMO. ND and GG are amazing but SSM is one notch above.

Let us just agree that all of Sony's internal studios and second-party (Insomniac and Sucker Punch) studios are the greatest.

Ya I remember hearing about Evan Wells from Naughty Dog going over and helping them in optimizing their engine. Great developers working together is great for us.

That's how it should be as first party devs ( technically all devs but especially those working on exclusive games) they need to help each other in order to come out with top quality product because the opinions and thoughts of many is more important than isolation in a business that strives off of what your consumers think of your product

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

That's the big advantage that Sony has brought forth this generation with it's first party developers being able and willing to share information and techniques. not only that, but Sony works with it's 'second parties' to provide them with more or less the same advantages. The more sharing of information there is the better. Making games is about the games not the technology. So having all devs sharing their techniques and knowledge leads to better games because devs can focus more on the game. When devs are competing and unwilling to share, each has to re-learn the lessons that others may already have learned, it slows down the process of mastering the platform and drags some focus away from the game itself.

I dont think my heart can take anymore waiting!!! 3D not taking away from the frame rate!? Ultimate gaming experience = Killzone 3 in 3D using the PS Move (non competitive) with surround sound…can life get any better?

Hey, can anyone confirm that patch came out for Killzone 2 to be in 3D..I'm pretty sure there was an article here on it getting that, but I heard it was never released….come to think of it, a couple games were suppose to patch…anyone have the offical list?

Technically Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3 will show why exclusives on Sony's platform outstrip everything else. I definitely think the GOTY in 2011 will be a PS3 title… just the sheet technicals achievements being had are incredible.

Dont forget about inFamous 2. They werent the best technical-wise, but with the help ND, I hope not many sleep on this game. So Killzone 3, Uncharted 3, inFamous 2, and Resistance 3 bar none

This is why PlayStation fans are accused of being "spoiled". Sony's first-party developers always make it a point to deliver quality games for the PS3. Fans get used to the (mostly) technical brilliance of the games that we sometimes could easily see the gap between the exclusives and the multiplatform ones.

But if I am going to be spoiled like that, I am in NO WAY going to complain!

KZ2 was a technical marvel, and if this bloke is telling the truth, the third will be greatness on a disc. One thing that really stood out for me in the previous game was the AI, and if they have improved further on this, I will be immensely happy. But, I still don't think that this will be a D1P from me. FPSes just don't really do it for me, and so the only series I buy at full price is Resistance.
Peace.

Hardly matters how much of the core they're using if the characters sound like imbeciles. Give me level and character design over squeaking out more juice any day.

Here's hoping they've done both.

That's why I appreciate the sharing of techniques and methods between the teams, it allows them to get more from the platform without over-focusing on the technology, leaving more time for story, character, level design and art. Well, I hope that's what happens…

KZ2 was the greatest online eva, for it was the first game that had high ass detailed graphics and no lag at all. But the deadzone while aiming was horrible and to slow. If was like duty a little bit it would be betta IMO. hopefully the move controller makes this one smoother to aim. If so day one purchase, if not then meh 😛

This is great news! Between the engines and pipeline optimizations, I'd imagine that graphical improvements for the PS3 are far but peaked. Perhaps the overall improvement may take a change in direction regarding HOW things are improved (aka, less modeling improvements and better filtering for effects along with greater draw distances) but improvements such as these won't go unnoticed to the hardcore gamers who enjoy more immersive environments.

Let's face it, for an $300 (or even $600) system, this unit has impressed many critics with it's first party graphical achievements. Only to be toppled by their storylines! Gotta love good storylines. But there's more than just graphics. Look at all the implementations they've squeezed out of this system while still keeping great graphics running at full frame (gt5.. I mean, imagine the processing power it takes to get THAT.. physical! 🙂 )

I'm impressed and would be more than happy to feel this over and very again with every new iteration of these breath-taking games. Rock on, Guerrilla!

Killzone 2 delivered and Killzone 3 looks like it's going me back into the multiplayer scene soon. Bring it on.

Hey this is off topic, but some of these Sony first party developers need to share some helpful information with Polyphony digital. GT5 is an up and down affair when it comes to content, graphics and overall excitement. Why can't I a purcahse 2010 Shelby Mustang…but I have to option to buy a premium Prius…Prius?…WTF…lol Anyway,

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Regarding cars in GT5. Each premium car contains so much detail both in terms of measurement and imaging, as well as physical materials properties, that each one takes (IIRC) months to model fully. The standard cars are up-res'd models from GT4 and GT-PSP which vary in quality between pretty darn good, to wishing that someone had at least finished off the wheel arches.

It's not a lack of programming knowledge that results in the difference in car models, it's the logistics of capturing all the data required for a premium model and doing it hundreds of times in a reasonable timescale.

Where PD could possibly use the help is in their alpha blending with things like smoke and spray clouds not blending well with the cars, as well as shadows looking blocky too. There are also some issues with the AA performed at 1080p creating an odd tessellation effect between tree's and sky in the distance. However the car models are not because PD lacked the ability, it's down to simple man power vs the size of the task.

I thought they announced that they had brought in a sci-fi writer (not sure whether it was a screenwriter or a novelist) to bring up the quality of the writing. I am probably wrong on that though.
Peace.
