Video games based on movies don't often fare well, but what happens when a great director immerses himself in the game making experience?

Well, Steven Spielberg gave it a try with EA back in 2005, but the first project – Boom Blox for the Nintendo Wii – didn't do much and as a result, the second intended title was canceled. John Woo has done some stuff, too, including Stranglehold , but that wasn't exactly a rip-roaring success. Still, Guillermo Del Toro's collaboration with publisher THQ could result in something very special. They're currently working on inSane , which won't be out until 2013 but they are planning a trilogy.

According to what THQ boss Danny Bilson told the LA Times , Del Toro is a "hardcore gamer who knows how to describe a vision and communicate it to a team." And what are among the director's favorites? The list includes Shadow of the Colossus …which has never been played by a casual gamer. Said Del Toro:

"The relationship between movies and games has been unfortunate because people in Hollywood see games as an ancillary product, but that’s the least of what they can be. We want to make a great, big, immersive, powerful and unique game."

Alright then. Now we have high hopes and if one game could take the Quantic Dream torch and pass it along, it could be inSane . We'll be very interested to see how Del Toro and Co. approach the project.

Well, the way Del Toro words it, I may have to keep an eye out for this one.

Really makes me smile to see someone with artistic credit in one field branch into other fields to make really great entertainment.

It is also nice to see someone in the film industry take video games seriously and treat it like all other forms of art.

Remember that article over a year ago about that guy (sorry, forgot his name) who argued video games was not a form of art? That man clearly did not play any Team ICO game.

Speaking of Team ICO, my faith in Del Toro has grown after hearing of him using Shadow of the Colossus as inspiration to create a grand adventure. If his video game creation is anything as incredible and creative (yet slightly disturbing) as Pan's Labyrinth, I will gladly put money towards his creation.

As for THQ being at the helm, I'm a little skeptical. They're a good team, no doubt, I just don't see them in the same league as the heavy hitters like Naughty Dog, Epic Games, (the old) Inifnity Ward or Rockstar.

have to agree with you there, THQ wouldn't be my first choice. But hopefully Del Toro can whup them into shape for his vision.

Hell yeah I'm interested, this guy is smart. At least now we know why he detached himself from the Hobbit movie.

I also hear he may be working on what could be the first Lovecraft movie to not suck "At the Mountains of Madness" is an absolute classic. If you haven't read it, you don't love horror.

Are you seriously using that as your avatar?

His decision to leave the Hobbit had little to do with this game, his series of novels, At the Mountains of Madness, or anything else he's been working on and everything to do with the madness that is the Hollywood filmmaking machine.

I'll give him the benefit of a doubt as a result of a few things: The first is a bare minimum 2.5 year dev cycle for inSane. Next, using SotC as inspiration. Third, Pan's Labyrinth was all sorts of awesome. Finally, the fact that he actually seems to be something of a gamer, and make something that will appeal to that market, rather than his primary of the film market.

However, THQ have really done nothing for me… Ever. So, perhaps not.
Peace.

Del Toro's movies have always been very enjoyable for me. I'm more than willing to give this game a chance to impress me as well.
This could end up being huge for video games.
Well, at least as far as story telling goes.

Pan's Labyrinth was a joy to behold… if he can translate this into a game, then who knows what type of adventures he could take us on…

I should be done with Skyrim by the time this game comes out so maybe I'll be able to have a look. If it's some SAW wannabe I'm going to be very disappointed though.

Haha, no. It won't have any resemblance to Saw at all. Guillermo's a horror/dark fantasy nut, and most of his work tends to lean in that direction.

He did Hellboy and Hellboy 2, Blade II, Mimic, The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, and something else I'm forgetting. He's also co-written two novels in a trilogy, the Strain and the Fall, with Chuck Hogan. He's a madman.

"This is an epic project. It's going to take the next eight to 10 years to build all three chapters of this game,”
