We often complain there just aren't anywhere near as many RPGs – especially JRPGs – this generation, at least so far as home consoles are concerned. And while two of the following are for the PSP and the other is a downloadable for the PS3 from the PSN, we're still happy they're coming.

Andriasang has turned us onto several new role-playing titles from Imageepoch: the first is Final Promise Story for the PSP. Produced by Yousuke Uda ( 7th Dragon , Etrian Odyssey , Persona 3 ) and featuring character designs from Chinatsu Kurahana and music composition from GainGauge, the game adopts a more advanced feature. Ala Heavy Rain , if a character dies, he or she is gone for good and the story changes accordingly. Imageepoch CEO Ryoei Mikage, the project's executive producer, said this is why the concept behind the game was "Lost Game." There is a teaser site available but it's in Japanese.

Next on the list is another PSP game called Black Rock Shooter . Imageepoch has announced it as the company's second title and it'll arrive on Sony's portable unit next summer. The year is 2051, 19 years after the eruption of war with aliens; mankind has exactly 12 people left, and they take one final stand against the invaders. You can check out the trailer through the link above; it looks like a promising handheld title. Last but certainly not least is the downloadable game for the PS3, Chevalier Saga Tactics , which you can see right here:

Now that's the kind of FFT-like game we've been missing! It'll actually debut on PCs as a free-to-play browser game on NHN's Han Game service in Japan, and the PS3 and SmartPhone releases will follow. Chevalier Saga Tactics is described as an "orthodox strategy game" set in Medieval times; we'll get a strategy mode (control a few units, as per tradition) and a "large scale battle mode," where you command entire armies in online play. It might even boast cross-platform play…

The best part? As TheMagicBox relates, all three of these games will be brought to North America and Europe thanks to NIS America. Sweeeeet.

PSP and PSN: 'Tis the fate of the jRPG.

Still though, Uda should deliver some good gameplay, at the very least. I'll be sure to keep myself updated on the progress of said titles.

Definitely do. They're the new Squaresoft without the insane-before-their-time graphics.

P.s. My new avitar is the same concept design Shion is similar to. I don't remember if it was the character designer or what role the guy played, but he based both Shion and Ellyham on the same concept, at least that's what I remember reading somewhere.

Either way, the same guy designed their concepts.

Yes I do, and I'm pretty sure all of us do – what harm do they generate? They keep on making good-fantastic games. It's quite rare we see an average/poor game from them.

Cross Edge was a disappointment for some – I mean hey we really thought it would have been cool to see a collaboration of characters from all those great games – Ar Tonelico, Disgaea, Atelier Marie, Mana Khemia and so on. But I guess they just didn't really approach it right.

And Atlus continuously does an awesome work with the Persona series – can't wait to see how Catherine turns out.

As for Highlander's avatar – it brings back memories…sad ones.

LOL! No worries worlds. I actually have one or two better ones at home, but there is a limit to what I will search for on google from work – if you know what I mean. There's too many icky images that google can trip over when searching, and I value my job.

@Shadowpal,

Cross Edge was really more of a toy box for JRPG fans. I don't think it was ever intended to be a serious JRPG, it was simply a combat and synthesis system with an excuse to exist.

Atelier Rorona is a decent JRPG effort, although the emphasis is on the synthesis system.

Still, Atlus and NIS do a great job, and the more we support them, the more they will do.

@Underdog,

Yeah, Xenogears and Xenosaga share some parallels, although the creators of Xenosaga are adamant that it's not a sequel, or a remake, but a completely separate game.

I'll eventually get xenogears, but there are so many games to play right now, it would have to be on my PSP to stand a chance of getting played. So I live in hope that PSN will get it.

LOL! Looking at Aeris, I can see (always have) similarities with Shion and Elly. I don't know about the Elly character, but both Shion and Aeris share some character traits (in addition to appearance). I guess my Knight in Shining Armor complex always drives me to the pretty, vulnerable, damsel in distress.

I'm interested in Catherine too but I'm pretty sure it's not really an RPG at all….(I could be wrong haven't followed it too closely)

Making a full blown PS3 JRPG would probably be financial suicide for these developers. It would cost too much, and the return from a now disinterested market would be minimal.

Putting out handheld games probably allows them to use old recycled game engines.

I don't think the market is disinterested at all. Look at all the people who bought FFXIII hoping to get a JRPG.

The same game engines could be up-res'd to something closer to HD and people would lap it up, no need to invest millions and millions. at this point something is better than nothing.

NISA always takes a long time to localize Gust games. Right about 15 months, usually. Actually if you go and look it up it's kind of amazing how many games are right on that 15 month mark. Atelier Rorona, the Mana Khemia games, Ar Tonelico 2, etc.

Ar Tonelico 3 game out in late January in Japan so expect it April-May 2011.

Mayb Sony should try making new JRPG IPs… I mean, they've pretty much rocked at pretty much every exlusive they've realeased… Mayb they should get one of their 1st party studios to give us a JRPG… I mean, all their studios make AAA titles so we know were bound to get something special if they decide to do this

If they did, they'd corner the market and obliterate Square Enix.

Guess I'm alone in thinking RPGs are completly boring and cring-worthy ('specially the JRPGs)? I mean all you do is level up a character and play sword fights lol…or am I just not getting the point?

That's like saying all you do with a book is turn pages.

You get into the story and characters, it's not all about the battles and they aren't all swords either.

"All you do in FPS's is run and shoot"
In action games "mash attack buttons"

Just examples, not like I believe anything like that….but Liam, god, when Orvisman says you're the minority you should know RPGs are what got most of us here into gaming

Hehe okay sorry if I offended your love for RPG's. Oh & world you had better believe I am…I play every genre with the exception of RPG's. RPG feel cheap & not well made to me..(even fallout 3 although I admire the atmosphere).
Highlander, I can only get into the story & characters when I don't feel like I'm playing a game (MGS4 is a shinning example), with RPG's they just don't feel real due to the authenticity of the gameplay…hard to explain. Maybe I'm just strict in what game I let myself open to.

So just to ask this again…I really am the only person who doesn't like RPG's (same goes for anime 0_o)? Maybe I'm on the wrong site lol..(just kidding)

Edit: Damn you slow on-screen keyboard >:[

First, handheld RPGs are junk. And by "junk" I mean "anger inducing."

Second, "tactics" games do not fill the RPG void.

When they announce Dragon Quest on the PS3, when they announce Persona on the PS3, when they announce Suikoden on the PS3, THEN I'll be in here with bells on.

If you like JRPGs, and own a DS and/or GBA, check out Golden Sun, definitely one of the best series that has ever graced Nintendo handhelds(The DS iteration, Dark Dawn hit stores today)
