Do you have your 3D-enabled HDTV yet? If not, you should know a whole lot of PlayStation 3 games will have that feature in the near future…

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe studio director Mick Hocking told Develop that interactive gaming in 3D isn't merely a passing fad; indeed, developers are readying a slew of compatible titles. "We're applying 3D to more than 20 internal games at Sony," said Hocking. "Overall we have more than 50 titles currently being coverted into 3D, and this number is growing fast." Some super high-profile games will have the benefit of this advanced technology, including next year's Killzone 3 , along with other titles like that ICO Collection .

Gran Turismo 5 , which launches today, is another one that boasts 3D so if you've got the means, you'll definitely want to see what such games look like when displayed in that extra dimension. Hocking added:

"We're actively talking to developers and publishers, and we're also offering training to them to help them get up to speed with 3D. 3D isn't just about adding depth to a picture–developers need to know how to get the very best out of the technology on PS3 and we'll ensure that they do."

There has been talk about how 3D has a negative impact on resolution and game performance (i.e., frame rate), but perhaps that's something certain developers will deal with better than others. The technology is definitely in its infancy so we'll have to see what happens down the road.

All fab, but at the current price point, the 3D technology isn't really reaching the masses.

Since Sony is a huge player in the 3D market, I hope they do come up with some means of making the technology more affordable.

well its kinda like the ps3 in its early days, ripe for epicness, just needed to be nailed by the developers.
and sony to reduce the price and market it. that all happened and look, the ps3 is brill.
They can easily pull the same off with 3D, they just need to realise they need to do all that.

Its a start, but it has to get cheaper first.

But hey, Sony is in the position for gaming goodness. Imaging, 3D gaming with Move (of course, w/o the glasses. I know there are 3D TVs that have the special filter in the screens themselves in lieu of the glasses)

great now only if these 3d games actually mattered. are any of them good? not only that, but does anyone have a 3d tv? and on top of that, do u really want to wear glasses just for a game?

Good? Kill Zone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 are both in 3D among some others. ICO is a good game, for most, not me. But the rest of your post I agree with 100%.

I love the 3-D TV's. Haven't bought one yet, but since they've come out, the price on LCD's have started to drop…Other than that, 3D doesn't interest me.

Heads up, saw one 50" plasma 3-d Tv for around $850 plus a 2 pairs of glasses Best Buy. Now that is less than I paid for a non 3-d Tv of the same specs two years back.

But what's the price on your TV now since 3-D came out? Betting it's significantly less

That PS3 is gone gone gone. You'd have to steal it from that girl who doesn't even post.

My buddy just bought his fantastic new 3D tv and besides underwhelming him he can't use it cuz it hurts his eyes. I have yet to visit and try it, but I'm not gonna be waiting in line to get one myself.

This shows two things:

1. In its current state, 3D tech is not for everyone.

2. You've got some rich friends

I have a 3d television and it adds quite a bit for some games and for others it's just a gimmick. I can't wait to see what Gran Turismo is like this evening!

I just found out that my estimated delivery date for my GT5 Collector's Edition should arrive this Friday(26th). I was told that it would not get it after Dec 3rd after all the BS I went through with Amazon. I originally preordered it with Release date shipping, changed my Shipping address, then it automatically changes your Shipping speed. I was pissed but that makes it feel a lot better. I can't wait for Friday 😀

For 3D I do not have one yet. I am going out on black friday in search for a nice HDTV(40+ inch). The best TV I have is 27" and I don't even think it has 620i. I want a 3D TV but can't afford it. Maybe in a couple of years when the tech improves and the price drops… a lot.

The wait is over… for everyone else. 2 more days!

I'm waiting for 3D TV's to be cheaper and improvement on the tech. Besides so many great HDTV's for a good price.

we're in the same boat Alexander. I think many others are too. I don't know many people with HDTVs and the people who do, don't have a HD cable lol

Not much of a 3d or graphic person. It is all about the game play! Don't need 3d and graphics only need to be decent.

One thing I have to agree with Adam Sessler from x-play is that now in days, all the graphics in video games are beautiful/stunning.

I feel that the gaming industry should focus more on game play. This is why nintendo is winning this gens console wars. This is just my most honest opinion of course.

The best graphics possible without sacrifice to gameplay would be ideal. When 3D grows up it will be compelling. Definitely agree with you regarding any game can be beautiful nowadays, but all that beauty goes out the window if gameplay sucks.

i dont like 3D on consoles because it downgrades the visuals.
consoles just are not equipped for 3D, tis why allot of 3D games are only 30FPS instead of 60 and allot of 3D games are 720P.
PC yea its fantastic, playing mafia 2 with DX11, physX, 1080P 60FPS in 3D looks freaking amazing!!!!!!
3D taxes the hardware too much, i mean i got 2 of the industries most powerful video cards and there struggling to keep a solid frame rate.
so how the hell is a single card based on a 7 series card suppose to keep up?
sony should of left 3D for the ps4, that way the console is more than powerful enough to do 3D justice.
ATM it cant, its short changing 3D.
if anything its hurting it because people see it and think this is the best you can get, when its not, far from it!

Ben: I hope you start examining the 3D aspect of these games. I was disappointed that you didn't mention the quality of the 3D in Black Ops and I remember you said you have a 3D TV but not the glasses. I haven't tried out the tech yet so I rely on reputable reviewers such as yourself to explain if its it worth it to invest in it. Also, as it is becoming an increasing focus of the developers, it should correspondingly be a focus of reviewers as well.

Personally I think the technology has tremendous potential to increase the immersion of the experience, but the barriers to entry are to high at the moment. But those costs are already coming down…
