You know Dreamcast titles have begun to hit the PlayStation Network, but did you realize they might be released in a disc collection, too?

Several sources, including Joystiq , have reported that GameStop is listing a Dreamcast Collection . As of now, it seems that listing has disappeared but when it existed, it held a February 15 launch date and a price tag of $29.99. It's supposed to be available for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and one can only guess what might be included in such a collection. Games like Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi cost $9.99 each to download from the PSN or XBLA so whatever this package is, it must include more than that, right? Then again, it might include more than a few lesser-known titles that might not ever exist as digital downloads. There's nothing too surprising about collections; we've seen the likes of Genesis, Atari, and Namco collections in the past, although a Dreamcast collection would be the most advanced system to get such a nostalgic package.

That sort of leads us to the question: when are we going to see a PlayStation Collection? You know, one with all our favorites, from Metal Gear Solid to Final Fantasy VII to Twisted Metal ?

If there's one Dreamcast collection I'm interested then it'd be Shenmue, never played the game but I've been hearing the roar that it's one of the most under-appreciated game.

Shenmue was real unique. It was loved by some and hated by others. At the time it challenged the conventional idea of what video gaming was. And it's the first game that I played where you worked a part-time job driving fork lifts.
How cool is that?

Shenmue, Daytona, VF3tb, DOA2, Crazy Taxi, Virtual On (Temjin 😉 Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Sega GT, Phantasy Star Online and Jet Set Radio were my favs.
If they release those all on one disk, I'd but it =)

You never heard of the Daytona? It made the Kessel run in less than 12 par-secs. =p

hehe, no, Daytona USA was an elite class arcade racer by Sega. After a long time Sega finally did console owners justice by bringing out a better than arcade perfect port of the game to DC. Complete with online play.

It was awesome =)

What was really great was being lucky enough to find the 6-player arcade setup at one of the casinos here back in the early 90's. That was just awesomeness to the maximus. Never could find the PC port, but I did have the Saturn version of it. A truly great racing classic if there ever was one.

Yeah, it was great. One of my all time favs. I played that one competitively. I'm sure wherever that actual arcade unit is.. it still has my records =)

Unless it's memory has been erased….

And yeah, the horse was awesome =)

THough Daytona USA for DC offered lots of new tracks; though, I still loved the core arcade 3 the most.

I buy it if it has shenmue, Blue stinger, illbleed, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Soul caliber, Sonic shuffle, Typing of the dead, and skies of arcadia.

yes Ben we need a PlayStation collection. The game collection I really want like what I said multiple times before is a MGS collection Remake like the Sly collection. I would also love to see a TM, but also Crash Bandicoot games return too. Oh and Jet moto, I loved that game and would love to play it in HD. Maybe sony's new "exclusive revile is going to be a classic. Jet moto, TM, MGS, Crash, Spyro or and bundle with multiple ones. The only game I know, that I like from DC is Crazy Taxi. I had so much fun with that game back on the PS2.

Sounds good. I've never really played any Dreamcast games so it would be nice to try them. Maybe get a better understanding as to why the system failed?

The quality of the games were usually good. Sadly, quality isn't always an indicator of success. DC failed for other reasons. One of them was EA; they purposely avoided the DC.
I foresee a sad landscape ahead for at least one of the major console players.
The third party publisher holds major power (CoD, GTA, Madden etc). And if pubs like Activision and EA decided, they could force a unified platform standard on the industry by backing only one major platform and neglecting the other… it won't be pretty. But I'm sure in the eyes of Bobby Kotick, having to develop one game on two vastly different console architectures increases dev time and costs by at least 30%…. so why not just make it one platform

I didn't know that about EA. Interesting. It's so easy to assume that consoles failed because they were up against Nintendo.

Temji they will also lose money if they start to back one console. Yes it cost more to develop for more consoles but cutting out all other consoles to focus on one will end up costing Activision money in lost sales. Does little to save them money. Thats why his threat to stop supporting the PS3 was so laughable. Times have changed. This isn't the pre PS2 era. It makes little sense now for companies like Activision to pull that crap considering they make a lot of money of making games for all consoles. A lot more than they would making exclusives. Common sense.

I still think it failed because it was mid=generation. It was more likely to wind up with PS1 leftovers than the big games being devved for PS2. However the multiplat games like Code Veronica and Grandia II were always better on Dreamcast than PS2, but the exclusives weren't enough to keep it afloat.

This idea isn't actually mine. It was inspired originally by Nintendo.

Nintendo's Iwata got on stage at an E3 years ago and warned the industry that we're in trouble. He said that the cost of developing games is greatly outpacing the growth rate of the industry by a huge margin.

Console generation after console generation has brought about a 7x increase in game development costs. The industry is not growing at that rate. They warned that the environment will become dangerous for smaller and mid-sized devs and publishers. A company will continue to bleed profit margins when the R&D costs are rising and game sales aren't following it proportionately. If no one has noticed, smaller companies are having to pool resources or be absorbed by big players… or they tank when one game flops. Factor 5/Grin

Is it no surprise that genuine 32-bit era jRPG's are a rare find? The sort of content those games require is massive, more-so than most games. This can be referenced when Square Enix claimed that a FF7 remake would be a major undertaking that would be extremely expensive.

Ex-SCEE CEO just had an interview that expressed a similar sentiment about the changing industry. He suggests that, inevitably, there will have to be convergence. And he foresees it happening within 10-15 years.

The thought process saying. Oh, well, less consoles means less game sales. Wrong. The demand for gaming entertainment is motivated by the content providers not the hardware. The purpose of refreshing hardware is to stimulate continued consumer interest. The current gen of gaming hardware can generate hollywood class entertainment with budgets that exceed 50 million. The necessity to increase processing power for delivering a fully fledged interactive entertainment experience is narrowing. THe need for new hardware is diminishing. Not to mention the expense is reaching exorbitant levels.

I support Iwata and former SCEE CEO's belief that the future will be very different for gaming platforms. And the major multi-million dollar publishers will be on board to streamline costs of development while delivering and sustaining a entertainment format that will be wholly accessible without boundaries.

It's only a matter of time.

Lack of DVD , EA was in bad terms with Sega after the Saturn failure,Piracy and I personally would add a very awful controller for fighting games.

But it has very good games , you should try the collection.

I would love to try out some of there games too. Always loved the games that I played on other Sega consoles before Dreamcast.
Only played some demo's for the Dreamcast but I must say that they had some better graphics than the PS2 and Nintendo for some or maybe all.

Sounds cool, but I fear they will never get to the really good games. Besides the obvious Skies of Arcadia I'd really like to see Sword of the Berserk and Slave Zero.

I'm sorry but the main Dreamcast games I wanted were the Sonic Adventures. I got both on Gamecube. Crazy taxi is now downloadable by itself I think so that would be pretty much it for me. Now, as far as not announced collections that I want I'd say Metal Gear Solid, Onimusha, and Ratchet and Clank.

I still want those.

doubt they will bring these too retail, too costly and i doubt theres much of a market for it.
much easier to release it on digital networks, and who wants them buys them that way its not costing the publishers much.
pop a game on the PSN and no one buys it, its disappointing.
release a game on disk, and no one buys it, its dam expensive!

Its only now people are starting to catching up to this reality especially since i've been saying this for the longest? Anyhow its not just the mid to small developers/publishers who are in trouble, but the big the publishers themselves are also are in trouble due to the low profitability of expensive game.

mergers and buyouts we never anticipated are going on and publishers have become far, far more austeritous than they have in the past, all indications that there economic problems brewing within these companies. In the end this industry is on a distructive path and its for this reason why we are headed for another overdue crash, this time this crash will be caused by expensive to develope games.

I'd pay a good full priced $60 for a Dreamcast RPG collection. Skies of Arcadia was a great title, but it's been neglected and left to collect dust. SoA Legends on Gamecube was a nice nod, but we never did get that sequel (or prequel… There was plenty of in game history laid down to support either way).

Seeing Vyse and Aika in Valkeria Chronicles isn't enough for me! I want to see them, their ancestors, or their descendants star in a continuation of Skies of Arcadia.

I've never understood why Sega was content to release Sonic shovelware time and time again, and let that gem get covered by dust!
