Okay, so you all have ESP. Well, the majority, anyway.
This past weekend, we wanted to know what you thought we'd give Call of Duty: Black Ops and the most number of votes went to the 8.5 – 8.9 range. And as you can all see, the game scored an 8.8, so y'all win. But don't get all cocky; your prediction had nothing to do with our decision and in fact, we had to think long and hard about that score. In all honesty, about two hours in, it was well on its way to nailing down that coveted 9.0 but see, we're supposed to keep playing. And that's when the issues we just couldn't ignore kept popping up; as entertaining and as blockbuster-esque as the adventure is, the technical problems hold it back. Even so, we highly recommend it if you're a fan of shooters, and we imagine the loyal CoD brethren will be plenty satisfied. We still feel the sting of "what if" (i.e., what if Treyarch had managed to clean it all up?) but as it stands, Black Ops is one of the most intense experiences you'll have this year.
Obviously, we can't keep that poll up anymore so we'll just shift the question: what do you think of the game? Is it meeting your expectations? Exceeding them? Are you disappointed? What's the general reaction from gamers out there? If you don't have it yet, you're not allowed to vote…scout's honor, yes?
Related Game(s): Call of Duty: Black Ops
Well, playing it right now, I don't know what technical issues you had (I haven't read the review yet =o ) but so far I like it. The story isn't the best, but it's keeping me interested, I kinda started piecing together certain things as it goes along now so it's stringing together. And then the multiplayer…ugh, it's the same, I love the new maps and the different guns, honestly having a little tiff with the CP (lol…) for buying things, just seems like more work but that's a good thing no? But..the online issues, there's just too much camping and too much lag (menu wise) for everything to be fun for parties atm..but I dunno =o I'm diggin it so far
Edit: Read the review, yeah I had a few of those issues too, though my team's ai didn't matter to me, I'm generally used to doing most of the work, but the game's checkpoints for sure need to be worked on quite a bit..

They really smashed my hopes with the splitscreen online. Everytime you join, your forced to have the same class's as 1st player, you cant buy your own guns for 2nd player and you cant sign into your psn account, heck they should have at least let us use profiles.
Yet Resistance 2 doesnt even do this but doesnt get flack for it… haha thats funny.
Not to mention most other games dont even support this feature on the PS3… Dont go complaining now cus COD dont!
I also want to add, its a great feature to have regardless, because we dont see it a lot on the PS3 so… again dont complain please…

@Snipey WOW, that sounds like a huge let down for that bit of the game.
@bigrailer, He can complain if he wants, it's his opinion and I agree with it. If you put a certain feature in a game, then don't half-ass that one part while the rest is polished. They should have either shown the same commitment to the split screen co-op or just done it normally without the split screen feature.

Something must have been in Bigrailer's dinner. He's lashing out tonight.
ok first off lets back up a sec. He can complain all he wants, I complain sometimes too.
But have none of you played R2, It has this same feature, and it is applied in the mp split screen the same way black ops does. So is it safe to say that Insomniac "half assed" that part in R2? Or is this just a complaint because its COD?
Second point is not many PS3 games support even this featurew. In fact R2 and black ops are the only ones in my collection that do. And im thankful for it cus I ahve friends with out a PS3, that would love to play it with me. Yet I understand why you would want your name logged in, and it to track you if you were at a friends house, but in that case just take your own PS3 with you. I dont see anyone with a PS3 that has a friend also with a PS3 playing split screen for hours on hours worrying about their stats. I believe thats why for the most part Its not an option on the PS3. IDK I cant asnwer that. But again the PS3 in most cases doesnt have this as an option period, so to even have the mp splitscreen at all is a plus in my eyes.
Its not really half assed, which is why I wouldnt even say R2 was half assed. In fact R2 was great, I only use it in this conversation because its the only other game I can think of that supports this option.
I dont know if thats how you guys feel fine… I just dont see how one has gotten a free pass this whole time, while all of a sudden its an issue.

@BigRailer
It didn't just become an issue now. It's a common complaint about most FPS games. It used to be common for such co-op play, now it's rare.
People are pointing it out in this title because they kind of did it, but didn't. They were SO close to doing it right. So yeah… people will point it out. Either do it or don't. Don't half ass it. I agree. I don't get why FPS games don't allow co-op campaign, for example.
@bigrailer… well Snipey didn't mention anything about R2 so he wasn't giving it a free pass. For all we know he could have never played that game or used that feature within it.
You seem to be to quick to jump the gun and rant about the first thing you read in a post that you disagree with… you did the same thing in the ME2 article with one of my posts. You gotta chill and think before you write.
Last edited by laxpro2001 on 11/11/2010 11:36:34 AM
LAXpro- wernt you just preaching about, having your own opinion?
Anyways I wasn't jumping the gun on anything… regardless if you play it or not, PS3 doesnt support that type of feature at this point, no game has done that before. Its kind of like the cross game chat issue. It would be awesome to have but you cant be upset with the system or game for not having it, when its just not supported at the moment by many developers…
I am kind of curious what I said about ME2, I honestly dont remember, but since im a patient person, something had to have set me off. So I appologize for that, and I appologize now for anything you guys got offended by.
Underdog, Yeah see I think one of us is misunderstanding whats going on. He wanted to be able to have himself or another ps3 owner be able to jump online and play splitscreen while both were logged in to their own names on one PS3. I know the 360 supports this feature but never have I ran into a game on the PS3 that supports, it. So look at it from a hardware stand point rather than a developing stand point.
But I do agree that it would be nice to have, I just dont think its worth it upsetting the game quality. I do also think the game should have had co-op for the single player! So in some respects I gotta agree with you guys!
I know what hes complaining about and it makes sense, that the second person SHOULD be able to buy their own guns and set their own loadout, when playing split screen online. That part I get…
The part about the profiles or user ID, is the part that I dont get. I just dont feel like this or R2 was half assed because of this. I wouldnt feel that way of any game I suppose.
What a nice feature that would be though… Hopefully one day soon I guess.
Yea I wouldn't call that preaching but yes I did say that. I just made a suggestion to think the posts through a bit more.
https://temp.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/8050.html
That's the article I was talking about… In it, it seemed like you didn't actually read my entire post or try to understand what I meant. You kinda went off at my Uncharted 2 not selling as well because its a sequel problem and manipulated it, ultimately disqualifying any points I made within the post itself.
Ahh ok I remember now…
That was nothing, I wasn't trying to discredit you. I have an adverse approach to that topic than you do is all.
At the same time though to hit on that one last time, I do get what you were saying. I cant play a sequel to any game before playing the original.

@bigrailer19
As laxpro2001 said, I've never played R2 (though i'd like too). But what about LittlebigPlanet? You can log into other users accounts and when you finish a level with the 2nd player, it displays their psn name in the score board. I'm just saying it could have been done.
Last edited by SnipeySnake on 11/11/2010 2:31:35 PM
bigrailer, they released a patch that allows you to use a different psn id as your buddy.
Snipey-
I understand what your saying and if I lived close to you I'd let you borrow R2! Anyways I know LBP supports this and I also know the 360 and halo for sure support that feature! And I'm all for it being in place for sure! I just don't understand why you discredit the game for not having the feature when 90% of the games out their don't have this feature… All in all your right though it's a feature that should be there just for the sake of it…
And sir bob… What game are we talking bout? R2? If so that's awesome and again if that's the case then more games should support this…
Borderlands and Scott Pilgrim support it too, im sure there are others.
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with sirbob6 about "R2" allowing two profiles being used at once, thus also allowing Player 2 to gain XP and advance in levels independently. If I'm not mistaken P2 can also keep said experience and current levels as well as unlocks.
I've played with cousins of mine and I could here the P2 say he's gained x amount of XP and that he had even leveled up (I think, even a few times).
It may be worth it to check that splitscreen online feature again.
I really like Black Ops a lot. I thought I wouldn't, but I like it more then MW2, Its just so much better then MW2. Funny thing is I told myself 1000 times that I would not get Black Ops, and I pre-ordered it.
haha nice… yea I actually was able to hold true to that statement, though in light of Ben's review I might pick it up later after a hefty price drop.
I'm staying true to that statement as well. It's actually looking a lot better, a lot better then MW2 I'm hearing. I might pick it up, after a price drop. I haven't had a good shooter for a while(since COD4MW, which I played up to last year soooooooo-never mind GT5 is coming out soon, I;ll be way to busy with that game.
COD:Black ops… PASS!!!
Aww. I knew I should have gone lower.
Scouts honor… can't vote :/
Didn't vote in the last one either. I only vote when its a question of something I can relate to but at the same time, I did expect a lower score… maybe low 8 high 7 range.
Is that because thats what you wanted it to be?
No, that would be silly to want to see a game score lower just because I have no intention of getting it.
I was merely basing it off my experience with previous COD's in the series, as well as the fact that though I really loved MW2 at first, many of my positive feelings vanished after spending about a month with the game. I didn't expect much improvement over last years model but it seems I was wrong…
Yeah thats my fault I got that idea from an earlier post in the review thread of yours… Thats my bad. I re read it and it seems your upset it got a high score because you had no intention of buying it on the theory it would decline from MW2? is that correct? let me know if i still got it wrong.
I'm not upset… I said I hate the fact it got that high of a score because I had no intention of buying it, so thats right.
However, I did not anticipate a decline from MW2, I just didn't expect much of an improvement. Also I'm still wary because as I stated, I loved MW2 when it first came out. I played the crap out of that game but after that first month it lost its fun factor for me. Thus even though I'm considering a purchase I'm definitely going to wait for a price drop or promotion.
Bigrailer, what is your problem today? You are picking fights left and right. Knock it off, this isn't like you.
Nothing is wrong, lol, I just read his post wrong it gave me the wrong idea.
I apologized to him…
And i accept that apology… no worries we all make mistakes
Im really liking the game as a whole.
Can't say to much bad about it.
Really? Nothing bad at all? You've encountered NO issues?
Dude, I like the game too, despite the fact I could have sworn I wouldn't. It's got some sweet production values… but the game's a mess. It needs a lot of fixing. Way too many hiccups to not notice.
Well thats not really what I meant lol.
I look at things differently than most people, maybe because I enrolled to go to school as a video game designer, or cus I work in drawing software, or im just a patient one, IDK.
Yes I have some complaints about the game, but nothing thats going to make me stand up and nit pick at all the flaws. If I was reviewing the game you would get that type of information, and if someone had asked me how it was, I would tell them it has its issues, but overall its good quality.
I was just speaking bluntly that so far (mainly the campaign) I cant complain too much. But of course I had issues with it, same goes for most the games I've played in the past few years, weeks and so on… I dont get to hung up on that stuff for some reason.
Yeah, I can understand that. I'm normally really patient too. Little bugs like slow load times or some freakish physics problem don't get to me. The only thing I really got upset about was at the end of 2 levels now, I got stuck on the environment. The second wasn't too bad, but the first had auto-saved there, so I had to completely restart. That kinda sucked. Ah well. I'm back on the straight and narrow now. Everything is advancing nicely now.
Ben,
So for all of us who nailed the score, where's our cookie?
Make mine a large oatmeal raisin, loaded with white chocolate chunks & macadamia nut goodness.
Please! LOL
I thought cookies were only given out if you do something exceptional… Not that it isn't cool BikerSaint, but thats way too many cookies to give out. Now if you were the only one who had it right, that clearly would have been cookie worthy.
I called it. I new it wouldn't bomb but i didn't think it was going to stand tall with the big boys in the 9's. 😉
Laxpro,
Heck, sharing in the spoils is half the fun.
You can have 1/2 of mine when I get it,
Lolz.
haha thanks biker! Can't wait it sounds delicious, those macadamia nuts sure gotta taste good.
Speaking of nuts in a mouth where has LV been?
jp LV 😉

I'm not gonna vote this time since I probably won't be able to get Black Ops 'till Holiday Season. My 360-based friend got it and says it is definitely better than MW2 which is the only one I spent some time with, so it gets points for that, and the Zombie bit looks entertaining (Zombie Nazis remind me of another game…). I want it, but it isn't something I'm wiiling to hurry and shell out $64.80 on.
I'm an MP fan, and haven't touched SP yet. So my thoughts so far:
-The currency based system is a welcome change. I can procure my needed weapons and perks rather than be required to go over a certain level to automatically get them (granted you still need to be of a certain level to get some weapons, but getting the attachments that i want is a huge plus.
-the character feels like paper. Right after playing MoH, the characters feel real "light".
-hit detection is not as good as MoH. Numerous times I hit another player close range on the head but it one bullet did not register the kill immediately; took about 2-3 bullets to do the kill.
-range of 'nades and launchers are very good! MoH should take pointers on this.
-MP Maps really feel like game maps. somehow, IW really does have better maps, but then it redeems itself with the size of the maps which are quite large for the most part.

never play a COD before, and maybe never will, but yes i am surprise, for a broken port of the 360, and for a game full of glitches, its made a good score, Fallot New Vegas freezes ad contain a lot of bugs, and it suffers in the final score, why this not happen here?
i not played the game, but i read in some gamiming sites the bugs that i appointed above, even the PC receive a bad port, its sad, i dont know, maybe my hate are taking control, but is very sad, a broken, rushed game sell a lot a even manage to get higher scores.
Sadly true.
COD doesn't deserve half of there sales
… and neither of you have actually played the game. 😀
Well I have to say Ben, I voted you would score it a 9… it was nice to think that you almost did 🙂
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
It's not the direction I want the games industry going.
Can't think how else I can articulate it.
First of all, the graphics on the PS3 version look terrible compared to 360. What happened Treyarch? Infinity Ward had no issues reaching 60fps on both systems without having to reduce resolution on either console.
Offline, the check points are horrendous, AI isn't worth a damn, and frame rate drops WAY below 60fps.
Online, frame rate drops WAY below 60fps, hit detection is very inconsistent, lag is worse than ever…
This game is, as expected, a disappointment. The best part about Black Ops is the hidden arcade and text based game on the computer in the main menu.
Yes, I'm mad. We get a SOLID Call of Duty game through Modern Warfare 1 & 2 from the team Infinity Ward, then we get Treyarch's $#!+ code. I much rather play Medal of Honor than this half-assed piece of crap…
From my post at PSXE Poll Update: God Of War III Will Be Last One Standing:
"I voted between 8.5 and 8.9, specifically 8.8."
Totally called it spot on, now I'd like a cookie 😀 a classic chocolate chip one, cuz those are just teh awesome.
To me, there has not been a COD (MW, WAW, MW2, and now BO) that has deserved a rating in the 9's.
Short singleplayer games and 6 v 6 TDM's do not deserve that score in my book.
so far what i heard is that you can call it "Call of Glitches"
BTW BEN have you saw this
