The iconic Need for Speed name is still revered. It's even more revered when early review scores indicate top-notch quality and the demo is quite encouraging .

Criterion Games has revealed some pretty powerful numbers: within the two weeks of the sample's availability, more than 2 million players have given it a try. The demo allows you to play one event as a racer and one as a cop; i.e., one as the pursued and one as the pursuer. It also introduces you to the Autolog, where you can compete against your friends. And here are a few more fun stats:

— More than 700,000 posts to the Speed Wall.

— More than 5 million Autolog Recommendations sent from friend-to-friend.

— 54 million miles of road raced.

— 20 million cop busts executed.

Wow, that's roughly 10 cop busts per person, which means people aren't just playing the demo for five minutes. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit has all the makings of a great racer: it's made by the Burnout guys, the combination of racers and cops is always fun, and unsurprisingly, the game controls, sounds, and – for the most part – looks great. Ready to race in a couple weeks?

You'll be disappointed like I do if you expect a gameplay similar to Burnout.
Because it's Criterion, I thought it's gonna play like Burnout but I forgot this is not Burnout, it's Need for Speed.

I take back what I said about the demo before.
This game is promising and it's certainly of Criterion's standard.

I didn't like the sense of realism back then but as I play it more, I've gotten used and better at it.
It only take me less than 2 minutes to bust the racers instead of 4 now.

It still has the arcade-y flair of Burnout but there is added weight to the vehicles, and some added physics. It's still nowhere NEAR a simulator but yes, it's a touch more realistic than Burnout.

Yea, it's a good thing I kept on playing the demo.

Ben,

I think that extra weight is deliberately added for the gameplay to allow the collisions that become such a part of being a Cop play and feel right. In Burnout Paradise, especially online, the merest flick of another car and you were spinning through the air on your way to a crash. that was always one of the bigger criticisms of the online play. People felt that the physics were somehow 'wrong' for the takedowns and collisions between player cars.

I'm not sure you can now, I saw something on EA's site about the demo closing. You might want to hurry to PSN and see if you can still grab it.

Oh well, I'll just check the game out when it hits. I have plenty to keep me busy until then.

D1P for me..Been so looking forward to this game coming out. After the blast I had with what criterion did with Paradise City..This game was on the top of my list as soon as I heard about it.

Yeah, it was just a timed demo.

I still had it loaded & went to play it last night.

But DAMN, even my demo is now locked with a message similar to Thanks for playing, & don't forget the full game is out on such & such a date, etc etc.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun with it & logged in over a hundred miles on the speedo of both the Crown Vic & the 3270.
I never got my take-down time lower than 2.22 though(using the C. Vic), and I never got to unlock the speeder's coastal run either.

But thanks to the demo, NFS is on my want list

To get a fast time, use the Crown Vic, stay off the boost until you have a full gauge and use the road blocks as soon as they become available. You can usually T-Bone someone when they get snarled up in the roadblock. Between that and the spike strips you should be able to get under 2:00.

I played the demo like 50 times trying to beat one of my friends times. He did it in 1 min 8 seconds

I may need to go out and get two copies so I can give one to a friend and take full advantage of Auto Log.

Thanks Highlander,

I preferred using the Crown Vic, had the much more needed weight ratio, putting more oomph behind it.
But I forgot all about having the boost, so I never got to try that out.
And as for the spike strips, even when I deployed them, they only seemed to work out 1 time for me.

And I rarely used the roadblocks, spikes, or that forgotten boost as I was purely trying to beat 2.00 the first 75 go's or so at it.
So I guess all in all, then my 2.22 wasn't all too horrendous, LOL

But I did ram 2 cars into roadblocks when I tried it later on, so that was pretty good fun.

Anyone know if the full version will support the g25 wheel fully, with 900 degree wheel rotation and what not? I don't like playing these games with the controller.

Pre-order arriving on the 16th, can't wait.

You can put me in the what looks to be a small group that only played for 5 minutes. I did both modes 2-3 times and didn't go back. I was dissappointed in the length of the demo, but I got enough of the game to pre-order it on Amazon, and for $0.98 in shipping I'm having it delivered the day of. Heck, I would have used more than $1 in gas to pick it up. haha What does Amazon normally charge for day of delivery?

Did you order early enough to get any of their specials?

BTW, the pre-ordered version is a limited edition that comes with 'extra' cars. I suspect it's just an unlock, but you do get something special in-game for pre-ordering.

I believe it also came with a $20 credit towards the next gaming purchase. GT5 will now be $40. Maybe the day of release shipping was a special too, it was $0.98 while 2 day was $9.98.

could be. I know one thing, Amazon refunded my shipping on GT5 because it was delayed…I guess every cloud does have a silver lining…

The name Need for Speed brings back old memories where me and my buddies would just play the heck out of NFS games – we had a lot of fun with NFS3 – Hot Pursuit in particular.

Gran Turismo and Burnout are at two opposing ends of realism and arcady spectrum, and NFS sits bang in between. I have loved all three of these games to the core for what they are. However, with the recent entries, it looked like EA lost sight of what they wanted NFS to be, and it ended up being nothing!

The last NFS I enjoyed was Most Wanted. Almost all other entries in the series only disappointed more than the previous one! I did not even try the generally well received Shift – just did not feel like picking it up.

This new title has got me excited again for the series after a long, looooooooooooong time.

Welcome back, Need for Speed 🙂

Yeah. The series has a lot of my hours over the years. I remember renting a PS1 and the first NFS game, being amazed at being able to be donuts. haha I think I would have to say that Most Wanted is my favorite to date as well. Good balance of modding vs. game play.

I like the demo except for one thing, needing to have a friend who's played it to do the race. Just hope they don't do stuff like that in the full version.

Need for speed hot pursuit II was the last NFS I truly enjoyed, I think that them going back to this was a very smart move on their behalf, they need to go back to their older style of games, the newer ones just don't seem to appeal to me like the older ones did for the ps2

As good as this game is looking I'll more than likely hold off on this one till after I've put more than a few hours into gt5….
despite all their shenanigans. Around these parts gt has thrice the hype of the COD.
Meant to try the demo but now I can't even though I assume it'll be back eventually.

cant wait for this to come out so i can give my G27 a good workout!
hope they have the paddle shifts and everything working properly, was so disappointed the lights dont work in burnout paradise.
plus, WTF is the point of having a racing game and not allowing anyone to change gears?
looked for a good half a hour the other day, trying to find the option to switch to manual but was nowhere to be found.
🙁
