The new version will start hitting retailers this month and sell for $49.99 (the cost of the older version). Detailed at the PlayStation Blog , this nifty new headset offers a dual-microphone design, auto-pairing via USB cable, in-game headset status indicator, an easily accessible microphone mute button, and the requisite charging cradle, which can also be used as a desktop microphone. Lastly, Sony says "it's the only device to offer High-Quality (HQ) mode," which boasts perfectly clear voice chat. Ah, but that's only the beginning; besides, none of the aforementioned is all that surprising, right?
Okay, well how about the sleek redesign (the device is now 30% smaller), built-in noise cancellation for filtering out ambient noise, and "the improved mobile phone feature support allows you to use features such as three-way calling and call waiting." This overhauled headset will keep on going for six hours, too. It's compatible with devices with Bluetooth 1.1 or higher and if you play online a lot, this is probably a must-have item.
But maybe you'd be satisfied with the old one until you can unwrap your new headset as a holiday gift.
i got the first ps3 headset with socom for christmas one year. i wouldnt mind having this one as it looks nicer. smaller is always nice too. im pretty sure the old one has an 8 hour battery life but i would think its because its smaller that its 6. might have to try to score one of these if i can.

Not sony's fault you waited, also this isn't too new to me, Newegg has had this shown in their inventory for about a month now, maybe it was an accident, or not, dunno, but it's been there
Doesn't the old headset have all those features? Other than the design and form factor, I don't see the reason to upgrade if one has the previous model.

The old headset HAD a HQ mode, and an on-screen battery indicator. Don't know what happened to it though.

I like that feature list but to be honest the old one looked alot better. I hate the rounded edges, its like they went from stealth bomber styling to sedan car curves

My old PS3 headset simply stopped working. It's hard to resist the urge to get the new one and get rid of all the cables on that PS2 Logitech headset…
Wireless headsets = rubbish.
Flipping ringing sounds of people ones online when they're running out of juice. Probably THE most annoying thing.
Sharkoon 5.1 cans MUCH better.
I'm happy enough with my P21 Turtle Beaches.
But I've played a few people with the old Sony headset. Always found it easy to hear them and rarely remember them having to run off and charge them all the time.
I'm sure someone will be happy with one of these for Christmas.
I hope they have less problems with this new model than they did with the old one.
Do you ever say anything postive? I have the old one and it works perfectly all the time. It does make my ears soar after wearing it for a while so I hope they change that.
The old one had *really* crappy sound, so this is about time, imo!
the old one keeps falling off my ear, hopefully the new one will fit me better. and to that comment about the Europeans not havin' mics, i dont see it, half of my clan is from Euro and they all have mics. They are a must, no mic no play.
i never got the first one ive just been using my regular bluetooth headset i have a few around the house… I never considered buying this because i purchased 3 xbox 360 wireless mics and all of them never lasted over 3 months so that left a bad taste in my mouth but does anyone know what the first gen ps3 mics will go for now? because if its around 20-30 $ i would buy it no problem they just need to stop messing around and add voice chat what is the big deal, its almost like how nintendo refused to add dvd im just disapointed more than anything to me its the ps3 can do honestly do everything BUT this feature
The old sony mics are really cheap at play and has been so for a long time. Around your pricerange I'd guess – and no additional fees (like postage etc).
I'll just keep using my PSeye as microphone thank you 🙂
Sounds like it'd make a great cellphone headset too. Perhaps that's a better reason to buy it than the gaming?
Naturally I don't know about the new one but at least the old Sony mic was waaay too slow in response to "pick up" an incoming call to be of any use to a mobile.
I love my old PS3 headset. I use it so frequently and it has never failed me… even after all it has been through… I mean, getting chewed on by a cat isn't fun you guys
People always tell me the quality is really good, too.

if the old one was lighter it probably wouldn't wear the back of my ear down. this new one is 30% smaller which should solve that problem. I hope people who use their ps eye get one. i cant stand hearing everything in someones house not to mention the echo of their tv from being loud.
