1 Million Move Units In North America, More Titles Coming

Sony has provided an official update on the status of their new motion-sensing technology, PlayStation Move.

You may visit the PlayStation Blog for the news: the gist of it is that Sony has shipped 1 million Move units in North America, and the library of Move-compatible titles continues to grow. Coming up are games like The Fight: Lights Out , SingStar Dance , and the Sly Collection . Next year, even bigger titles will feature Move capability; you'll be able to play super huge games like Killzone 3 , LittleBigPlanet 2 and SOCOM 4 with Move. If you haven't yet sprung for the new peripheral, here's a list of the current titles:

Even if you're not convinced just yet, Move still has a long ways to go. We'll be interested to see how things progress, and whether or not it proves to be a better motion option that Microsoft's Kinect, which launches this week.

You've got a good thing going Sony.

Just continue to keep ahead by continually replenishing the Move stock!!!!!

LOL! I saw some goobers over at IGN in a Kinect Launch Titles article crowing about how much better the Kinect launch games are than the Move launch games. I didn't realize Move had this many already. Oh those silly bots. 😉

Kinect has 15 at launch according to E3.
How many Move had at launch?

Not sure but it doesn't really matter if you think about it. We already had 3 hard core games that were compatible with Move at the time of launch. Kinect has zero. Right out of the gate Sony showed us what we can expect for hardcore games and Move. It's still up in the air with Kinect. So far it's all shovel ware they ripped off from Nintendo.

every time I see something Kinect it causes the neuro-transmitters in my brain to react to it. I have this conditional response that I just can't shake. I always think, "lame, stupid Kinect"

I can't help it. =)

look at what i have just found from cnet web-site "Leave your dignity at the door
In a word: absolutely. In more words: absolutely, so long as you don't mind sacrificing all of the dignity you've spent your whole life accruing. We've spent several days playing our way through the launch titles and concluded that it's impossible to maintain any sense of self-respect while playing. Although different games will vary in how physically demanding they are, most will have you leaping, ducking, waving and kicking invisible opponents in the shins. It's embarrassing, but that's a big part of the fun. Similarly, watching your friends flailing around like loonies is a treat not to be missed.
Playing Kinect is also exhausting. We may be out-of-shape journalists, but we defy anyone not to end up panting. If you have kids, the attraction of a gadget that's both entertaining and exhausting will be strong. We found that Kinect frequently lagged or failed in its attempts at tracking us mid-game, but we'd be lying through our teeth if we said that these issues stopped us enjoying ourselves.
Kinect won't satisfy the hard-core gaming crowd, but we think it'll delight children and make for an excellent entertainment piece at any party. There are a few things that might stymie your enjoyment of Microsoft's motion-gaming monolith, though."

playing without a degnity ,LOL this is something new

Move still needs a killer app. The current and upcoming games just don't convince me enough to get on moving. :/

I'd love to move, but it's just not happening. >.<

I think Sorcery has the potential, except it might appeal more to kids with all that Harry-Potterness.

TheHighlander

Not to mention the face that Sorcery with Move utterly annihilates the Harry Potter game played almost literally on rails, with Kinect.

Jawknee

I was wondering how they were going to move the characters in that Harry Potter game not to mention any game that would require a analog stick to navigate the character on screen. Is there any other way to do it except on rails?

Now that I think about it; How are they going to aim the kinect at causal gamers when the majority of they're gamers lean more towards the hardcore crowd? Considering that the majority of the 360 library is compose of 1st person & 3rd person shooters, how exactly are they gonna be able to play those games. I don't see kinect selling as much as move has. But you know what it's a sad fact that people will sometimes buy into gimmicks.

Yea after watching IGN's review of the hardware, i really can't see how this thing is going to survive in the long run. Move will be compatible with most hardcore games and causal games were as Kinect seems it will only support shovel ware. I think MS is banking on cutting into the Nintendo's market and stealing some of those people but even then, i think most will prefer to stick with their Wii or perhaps even buy a PS3 Move bundle. I think Kinect will only stay around as long as it does because MS will keep pumping cash into it to prop it up.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

No, they demo'd the game at GDC (I think) and it was a totally on rails experience. By comparison Sorcery was a more traditional free exploration game. Not only that but the Kinect peripheral had a hard time registering when the players wanted to do something, Move had no such issues.

MyWorstNightmar

Jawk, when you hear how much MS is pushing Kinect with this over the top marketing campaign, I get the feeling MS is hoping to MAXIMIZE their sales at the beginning. Basically get everybody excited to buy this thing up front. I think MS knows as the word gets out on how useless and feckless this Kinect thing is, that the excitement will die down, and it will be tough to keep selling this thing.

Basically, MS understands they have a very tiny window of opportunity to sell the most possible units, and that is right now. I don't see any sustained sales opportunities for this.

The Move might be different though. It could see a steady growth in ownership as I am sure a lot of PS3 owners are taking a wait and see approach to it, wanting to see how developers can integrate it into their games.

So far the only one I'm much interested in is The Fight, although Tumble is supposed to be intriguing. I can wait. I can wait a long time. I'm starting to notice the ramp up to the Kinect ad push. Should be fun to follow the hype train right off the tracks.

Ben just wondering if you'll ever do a review of The Fight Lights Out? IGN gave it like a 3/10 but you know… their IGN. I need a good review from a good source. 🙂
Maybe they are trying to make it look bad to help Kinect.

IGN can be off, but usually not by THAT much. Maybe it sucks. What I am curious about though is if Kinect is so close to release: why are there no reviews or impressions yet? (aside from the older ones)

My favorite story of the moment is a report by IDC claiming that Kinect will outsell Move, specifically in the US market

But please note that the story is reported without that qualification about the US market, so it' looks like IDC are reporting that Kinect will outsell Move overall.

Gotta love that kind of sloppy reporting and biased research.

MS hopes for 5 million in sales right out of the gate. It has me wondering if there are even 5 million potential buyers with 8 feet of space between them and their TV who don't wear glasses.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

What do you mean, "don't wear glasses" does the thing have problems recognizing people with glasses? Oh boy…

No, I don't know many people with the amount of empty open space in front of their TV that Kinect requires. Even if they do ship 5 million, I will always wonder how many are actually bought by consumers (and not given away by BK), and not permanently stored in a closet.

The guy at Joystiq (I think) had to remove his to get it to recognize his face in the setup, but he needed to see, so the only way to keep going was to find an old pair that had slim frames.

Oh man, that's just priceless. I can't wait for the headlines when this thing hits consumers and folks run into that kind of problem. I mean, it's not like glasses are unusual…

i cannot believe people wait in line for two days to play riverraft the best thing kinnect can do in my eyes is dancing games and weight loss software, i get the dancing that seems really fun but its not worth the price its at right now to me that is

It's actually the main reason I'm getting Kinect.

Dance Central and Michael Jackson The Experience for Kinect.

I know it sounds weird to buy a peripheral just for 1 or 2 decent games, but when they're dancing games of this quality, I personally like it and would get it.

Move will be on my wish list once Sorcery and Killzone 3 are out. And SOCOM 4. Actually, apart from dancing and health games, Kinect really doesn't have as much going for it.

Orvisman
Orvisman

Ummmm… There is talk that Dance Central will make its way to Move.

Michael Jackson is coming for the Move too, so expect more-precise dancing in that version.

Dance Dance Revolution is releasing for the Move this month.

Finally, Singstar Dance is also releasing on the Move this month.

There, the Move has your dancing covered.

hehateme,

The only reason that people were standing in line for two days, was because the word "FREE" was attached to M$'s Times Square Event.

They gave away some various FREE Xboxs, Kinect's, 2 or 3 Kinect games, free 1 year XBox Live Gold cards, plus some other minor swag.

I'll make bet that if the word "free wasn't thrown in, it would've been much more of a non-event no-show than what the Brinks trucks that M$ paid out their wazoo, to make it seem like.

Anyway with M$'s $500 million+ ad campaign my opinion is that I don't foresee M$ making much mony on Kinect, and here's why…..

M$ doesn't care about the profit since they're already rich with filthy money, it's all about big numbers.
M$'s mentality is to just keep on trying to flood the market with their inferior products in the hope of sinking all their competition, no matter what the cost….
just as they've always tried to do.

But guess what, M$???

Wow, get a load of them Kinect game review ratings. Nice string of 5, 6, and 7's.

THat's okay though. PR tricks will sell it through, though. That's right. The day before it launches MS builds hype by claiming it'll sell, not 3million, BUT 5 million units before yesterday folks!
Do I hear 7, 8, even 10 million?

Remember 360's unveiling event that had MS announcing they hope to have 1billion 360's in households across the globe?… (maybe it wasn't a billion but it was some astronomical number no one would believe)

johnld
johnld

well, when you go by microsoft's practice, they can "sell" 5 million kinect units easily. thats because they count units shipped as units sold for their 360s and i cant see why they wouldnt do it here.

another thing to consider is that they're practically giving kinect away, to inflate the numbers in my opinion. The toys r us in new york will give out 150 dollars worth of kinect games to the first 3000 customers on launch day. i believe that they give away 3 games free but they will still charge $60 retail for kinect games. not kinect compatible games, the ones that can only be used with kinect.

theres also a publicity stunt where mark wahlberg is giving away a bunch of kinect hardware to some boys and girls club charity. aside from that, they're pulling out all the stops and having a huge kinect launch party. check kotaku for picture, its just plain stupid. They're really trying to sell this hardware on hype alone and sadly theres a lot of idiots that will buy this stunt.

GuyverLT

I have both a 360 & PS3, but the only thing I've seen from the kinect so far is you being able to interact with all the apps thats on live via voice command & a interactive pets game for small children & of course the infamous lose weight exercise thingy or whatever the hell that exercise game was suppose to be that they showed earlier this year. I could be thinking about it to much after all I don't think that kinect is aimed at they're hardcore gamers. I'll admit that the voice command concept is kinda cool if all you want to do is just browse the menu & all the apps, but playing actually games & I'm not talking bout the little pet game for kids. I honestly don't see the 360 gamers being able to play halo or they're precious gears of war games with Kinect, or maybe Microsoft will comes up with something, who knows I could be wrong of course.
