The PlayStation 3 launched nearly one year after the Xbox 360, and Sony suffered from constant criticism concerning the console's price ($600 to start), the lagging Network, and a lack of must-have software.
Four years later, the worldwide sales gap between the PS3 and 360 has almost closed. According to the most recent sales data for the second fiscal quarter, and updated figures found at NeoGAF and summarized at Examiner.com , the PS3 has enjoyed a great 2010, outstripping the 360 by a current tally of 8.1 million compared to 5.8 million. The 360 certainly still has the lead in North America but in terms of worldwide numbers, the difference is almost negligible:
Worldwide Sales:
Xbox 360: 44.5 million
Sony PS3: 41.6 million
This generation, the PSN has taken gigantic strides, Blu-Ray has become the high-definition standard, the reliability of the PS3 has proven to be vastly superior to the 360 (although we have to admit, nothing holds a candle to the indestructible Wii), the price has fallen to the $300 "sweet spot," and oh yes, the games…with must-play, measuring-stick exclusives such as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , God of War III , Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , Heavy Rain , Killzone 2 , LittleBigPlanet , Demon's Souls , and Gran Turismo 5 (whenever it may arrive), it's tough to argue against the PS3's value.
The PlayStation Move might also prove to be a hardware mover, although the impact of Sony's motion sensing technology has yet to be fully felt (despite the approximately 2 million Move units sold worldwide thus far). The last note: we just keep wondering how many of the 360 sales are second, third, and fourth purchases from the same consumer who had another system go kaput. Just a thought.
Wait, 44.5 and 41.6.
I'll put my spec on, let's see here, 44.5 and 41.6.
Uh huh, nothing's wrong with me.
That's a 2.9million gap with GT5 still yet to be released.
Perhaps Kinect will stop the gap from closing by………..a bit.
1, maybe 2, possibly 3.
I still dont get why people(360 owners) prefer to pay for their online play rather than just having it free.
Its a no-brainer.
PSN sucks man!!!
Live have cross game chat!!!!!
you forgot your sacasim tag snaaake. at least i hope so

It makes them feel as if it's better. You know, the 'you get what you pay for' mentality. You don't pay for PSN, so obviously Live has to be better, duh. I fear for the future of humanity.
Peace.
well i gotta say that is a flaw, but its not a major one,is it?
its not a flaw man games like mag would be totally destroyed by cross game chat
I don't look sarcastic enough?
Some thumbs down there eh?
Maybe I should have put my sarcasm tag.
lol. i pitty the 360 owners that pay live i may have a 360 but i refuse to pay for live. i'm happy with doing all my online gaming on my Ps3. FREE ONLINE GAMING FTW !!

lawless you think humanitys fuck'd because of paying for online games?
HA!
we're screwed completely…
@ Zorigo
lol I think you missed the point.
He said Humanity is F*ed Up because people automatically think paying for a service makes it automatically better when in theory they should be looking at the features before judging and not just some price tag.
i am paying for my online experience on the playstation… i upgraded to PSN+… and i have gotten more than my moneys worth out of it… every game they have offered for free, i didn't previously own, and i've been a part of a few betas now…
i will gladly pay $50 for PSN+ every year… because, at least i am getting some cool stuff from the store… i don't think xbox has a reward policy for those who payed for their service, lol…
Zorigo,
Not just that, but a lot of other, more important factors. More relating to people than sheep.
Peace.
bones, you're not paying for an online service, you're paying for bonus's, just bells and whistles, the service itself is still free whether you were ps+ or not
well, duh… i know it's free, lol… i am just saying that paying for the service has some nice benefits…
One thing I've learned here Snaaaake is that you can always go back and change your thumbs down to a thumbs up and vice versa.
I prefer to play over XBL than PSN because most (about 95% of them that play online) of my friends are on XBL.
Well, if the sales speed doesn't change, by this time next year the PS3 will be in the lead. Finally. This should have been the case a year ago.
I just wish that people would wake up and see that the 360 has almost nothing left in the tank. I mean, if Kinect doesn't become it's saving grace, we will undoubtedly see the next one in 2012, while the PS3 should have more than enough to carry it through for another two years beyond that, even if Move doesn't work out as well as we think it will.
What I think would be really interesting would be to see sales comparisons between those two peripherals in a year or so.
Peace.
I think a console dies when it reaches the $100+ range. The Wii will certainly see a pricecut soon. Xbox took it's 3rd years to get to $199. Seeing how desperate their attempts to cut their prices show that the console is dying already.
Xbox 360: 44.5 million
Sony PS3: 41.6 million
Damn I did not see this coming! There is literly a gap this smal I I.
Wow! The reason Ps3 is not outselling Xbox is
A) Because during that 1 year that Xbox had a head start literly all Xbox purchased RROD'd. Boosting sales by a double!
B) Ps3 used to cost a fortune! 600$
Thats pretty much it, if otherwise Ps3 will have equal to or more than Xbox units sold.
Wont be long before Ps3 surpasses Xbox. KILLZONE3, LBP2, SOCOM4, UNCHARTED3, GT5, AGENT, wow look at all the Playstation 3 Exclusives right of the top of my brain. Playstation Move… Kevin Buttler…

You're probably right on the reasons for the PS3 not being on par with the 360. And yeah, there is a brilliant list of exclusives coming up, but how many of them would you classify as bona fide system sellers. The only one that I can think of is GT5, as it has a huge fanbase and is guaranteed quality. Oh, and we can't forget about Move, provided that Sony gets the right support for it. Although, I don't think that too many people are buying the PS3 because of Kevin Butler. He's just the middleman.
Peace.
Dude I got in the KILLZONE3 beta, you have no idea what I experienced. In the middle of the game theres this explosion of some sort, I can't even explain. It's an explosion of green visible energy in some sort of big machine IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAP! It charges energy & makes a really cool sound! Then BOOM! Energy bursts jamming the map for a few seconds. WHILE PLAYING MULTIPLAYER! DUDE MULTIPLAYER! NOT SINGLE PLAYER. Never before have I seen this in MP ( exept KILLZONE2 but not as cool ) When Guerrila said " They are pushing the limits " it wasn't BS. They really are. KILLZONE3 will definitely help Ps3 sales. Sure, KILLZONE2 is Kick-*ss but KILLZONE3 is better. I think the gap KILLZONE1 made to KILLZONE2, is almost the same as KILLZONE2 to KILLZONE3. The difference is noticeable.

Regardless of how good the game is, and I have no doubt that it is absolutely, insanely good, I don't see it being a system seller. I think that most anyone that would be interested in KZ3 would have gotten the PS3 alongside KZ2. But, we shall see, we shall see.
Peace.
Killa, you just made the wait to my birthday (Feb. 22) that much harder.
Trust me might be 1, might be 2 people 100, 2,000…1 million, but for every one person that buy a Ps3 due to KILLZONE3, it's a contribution to Ps3's sales.
Sirbob, if I could explain that explosion better It would have made your wait EVEN HARDER, but it's beyond anything I've ever seen anything in ANY MULTIPLAYER game.
It's not just flying bullets & granade explosions anymore… the environment has things going on on its own. So cool.
seeing the game agent in your list just made me think, when is the game the agency finally going to come out? or did it get canned
@Killa Tequilla: what you forgot to list the xbox exclusives let me do that for you. lets see here……….give me a sec……….um………will there's……………….
lol
I've always wanted to know the number of installed consoles. How many are actually in homes? The 360 has sold more because people have had to buy multiple 360s due to failure, so the numbers are kinda skewed a bit. I'm willing to bet that there are more working ps3s in people's homes than 360s.
That would be a better way to gauge it, but how would they go about doing it? I suppose we wil never know the truth of the matter, which is unfortunate.
Peace.
I think the best way is observe the software attach rate of the PS3 and XBox softwares. You can buy multiple consoles, but you won't buy more than one game.
Unless there is an issue with disc scratching.
I predicting that as soon as ps3 outsells 360 microsoft will announce there next console.
major nelson reported that the xbox360 has on
only sold 42mil consoles in 35 countries.

Nice kratos holding master chief head avatar.
I didn't realize that the PS3 was at that point. I can still remember when we were discussing that the Wii had sold 40 million. and MS and Sony were half of that…Out of Curiosity, anyone know where the Wii is as now that the " Wii craze" seems to have petered off a bit?
Yes, the wii sales are really slowing down as is the 360 both won't last much longer as for the PS3, it has a good another 5 years in it, but I can see the PS4 coming out with in the last year or so of that.
The wii was a joke and the 360… the only thing it has is getting it's 1 year head start and retarded people who keep going back and buying another one after it breaks, then going back for a third… so on, so on.
the last year out of five might be pushing it. we all know the rest of the console manufactures, sony and nintendo, will be dragged into the the next generation because microsoft will try to start it so they'll have another head start. although i dont know what improvements they can put into the next gen. probably integrated kinect hardware and actual HD capability like bluray.
Wii what now?
Well that might be BS but coming from Sony and Nin Nin reps… Nintendo should be releasing a new system within 1.5-2 yrs and Sony 3 yrs. Ps3 will remain active for much longuer tho lol just look at ps2 XD ( were still selling them )
But heck I don't trust the reps all that much. Most of the time we know more than them lol
@CH1NOOK i think a little over 70million sold
Dude before mid of next year that gap will be closed. with so many PS3 exclusive games coming out and GT5 being the big one that gap will get pretty close to being nothing.
Microsoft has nothing halo reach came out but it ant selling many consoles only the Xbots are getting that… game. and we all now the kinect sucks… BAD! it's a joke for crying out loud the eye toy for the PS2 performs better lol
theres just one question i want to ask, does these numbers use units shipped or units sold. we all know that microsoft counts units shipped as "sold" when talking about their sales. sony uses values of actual sold units, excluding the numbers they released for move units.
If they're counting units shipped for microsoft, then they may be sweating bullets right now. i dont see kinect doing much of an impact due to the fact that i dont see it attracting new customers with its expensive initial cost. factor that with the amount of repairs/replacements due to RROD and the idiotly fixed red dot of death, sony may have already passed microsoft already.
If they didnt count units shipped then microsoft is still screwed. the ps3 is outselling it worldwide even with a head start and at a higher price point and theres no signs of slowing down. they might even cut this lead in half because of the holiday season. sure 360 will sell units but rushing a broken system to market kinda marked them for crappy hardware. then theres the 360 loosing exclusives. i mean all they have now is about 2 main franchises and "timed exclusives" for DLC.
the only way for microsoft to be able to win this generation, which i can see them doing by the way, is prematurely start the next console generation. i for one wont be an early adopter because theres still a lot of potential left this generation. i'll just play my ps3 while buying ps4 games really cheap before i spring for a ps4. i know i'm getting one, just not anytime soon.
I think Ninty and Sony should wait MS out. Nintendo has enough money to rest on their laurels a bit and Sony still has a machine that is still being tapped for power. Just let the 360 stagnate, then MS will release their Xbox 180 and it won't get many exclusives because all third part devs will want to go multiplat so it will have to be on PS3 too.
Wait a bit so there are plenty of first party PS4 games then release it in time to crush Halo 6.
To quote Agent Smith, "It is inevitable."
Though I must say I do look forward to the fanboy backlash when it happens.
Like I've always said, it's only a matter of a few months before the PS3 will close the gap…..
…..well, I think it was something like that
=p
what if… stay with me here… what if the hardware department was the downfall of microsoft. irony?
Can't say anybody would put much faith in "Microhard"
