Sony: First-Party Teams Push PS3 To “Full Potential”

People often wonder how much further developers can push the PlayStation 3. Well, when it comes to PS3 exclusives, it seems obvious that first-party designers are further down the path.

In a recent OPM interview , Sony vice-president of Worldwide Studios Europe Michael Denny said such developers have finally started to push the PS3 to its limits. After praising certain upcoming third-party titles, Denny went on to say that their network of in-house talent is really pushing the envelope. Being able to "share ideas, best practice, and thoughts" allows the first-party devs to bring out the best in Sony's machine, and Denny referenced Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch's relationship.

"I think the success of these studios is that a lot of them retain their independent views and creativity but lean on each other for support."

The PS3 still has more to offer in terms of power but when you add in PlayStation Move and the new 3D perspective, there's even more to consider and master. Essentially, Denny is saying the PS3 is a long way from finished (thank God for that; we're just not ready for the PS4):

"What's exciting is that we're five years into PS3 and developers are really starting to push PlayStation to its full potential… Then you later on top of that Move launching, then you layer onto that the potential of 3D. It's exiting times to be involved in PlayStation."

Well, exclusive titles for any platform tend to shine above the multiplats, and it's extra clear in the PS3's case; we won't run down the list, as just about everyone knows them all by now. 😉

Hopefully 3rd party devs will take from the example the 1st party devs are making and make more of an effort with the PS3. The PS2 is still being used to this day, Microsoft get outta the way, the PS3 is here to stay! lol.

i love my PS3 and i am in no way ready for a ps4. i am just having way to much fun with my ps3. i see the potential for move to be a lot of fun and really want the software to back that up. 3d will be out of my price range for a long time i am sure. still interested in seeing it and trying it but buying will not happen for a long time if i do. i am really disappointed in some of the developers this gen. it does not make it look good for the future of video games if they are all gonna be to lazy to make games that move forward. LUCKLY we have SONY.

i am almost starting to think that the kevin butler ads helped push my dad to buy a ps3.

Glad we have these dedicated first party studios thanks to Sony of course.
3rd party exclusives are as good as dead now.

Though I wonder what was the budget for UC2, the budget should be massive but I've never seen any news saying how much it cost.

I love you Sony!

Seriously though, you can't deny that Sony pushes their first and second party devs to create amazing experiences.

And not just "make 1000 Halo / Gear of Wars sequels."

Can't wait for The Last Guardian, White Knight Chronicles, etc.

Definitely have to agree that 1st party devs are the best but what would be even better is if 3rd party devs could work a bit harder and make games that are on par or at least close to the 1st party ones. Then we would all win. 🙂

Many 3rd party dev's can Demon's Souls, Yakuza, Metal Gear and White Knight Chronicles look and play amazingly well.
Yes.. I only hope multiplatform can improve which has been disappointing dev studios just need the right resources.

third party devs can but the ones you mentioned focused on one system to work on. when people mean third party, the assumption is third party that does multiplatform.

Sony 1st/2nd party exclusives not only excel in tech, but consistently manifest a certain kind of magic in terms of presentation and hollywood-caliber production values. They also benefit from stringent QA, and have relatively less bugs.

On the multiplatform side of things, of course Ubisoft Montreal and Rockstar are no slouches, either. Kojima-san's studio is quite likely just as elite as any of Sony's own.

Yeah, Sony really stepped it up this gen. Not that they didn't make good games in the past but they're simply more important today in such a competitive environment. They consistently produce quality games. Even sports games like MLB The Show (which is outside of my interests) are remarkably well done, even for me to see.
Honestly, if Sony hadn't put forth the muscle and willingness to push their quality games this gen, I'd probably have prioritized a 360 over PS3 in most of my gaming needs and I'd probably have been hanging out somewhere else socially.

Definitely. My library reflects that observation as well. During my ps1 and ps2 days, i had more 3rd party titles. This generation, it's the other way around. Probably is causal to MS's more aggressive policy of buying up 3rd party titles and exclusive deals and marketing. Sony couldn't compete with MS's extravagance, so instead they invested wisely on 1st/2nd party support.

edit: no "causal to", but "because of".

I bet Sony could've competed after the manner of MS's strategy, but I don't think they valued the logic in it.
Rather, and thankfully, Sony opted for in-house content to create more must-haves under their name. And really, I'm sure there's many who don't know that Sony publishes games like Uncharted 2, GoW3, and LBP, which is fine, because what matters is that people recognize those as great games that they want to purchase and play. And if those games aren't on 360, well shucks, gotta get a PS3 instead, eh =)

ps3 users are much more diverse in picking game genres but 360 users are more about shooters. that system is all about shooters and their "superior" xbox live. the reason why games like alan wake didnt sell much. in general, xbox users are around kids and teens which greatly outnumber their mature gamers. all they play is shooters or any twitchy type of game. if you dont believe that, just spend time playing one of their online games and see how much whiny kids use their mics. kinda makes me happy that ps3 mics are sold seperately.

You're right on that one. There's no excuse for the lack of sales of PS3 exclusives.

It's sad though, cuz last gen even a third party company could make a masterpiece that pushed the tech because even if they wanted to go multiplat xbox 1 was the slightly more powerful system. Now all the multi plats have to work on the raunchy old pile and its little DVDs.

Temjin001

I think slightly is an understatement, World 😉

Not only did the Xbox have significantly more RAM (relatively speaking) it also had an HDD. Certain games by western devs were avoided altogether on PS2 because of it's lesser spec.
Bioware was one of them.

PS2 was a great polygonal beast for it's time with some great transparency/filter processing (ZOE2 was wow in this regard, thanks to VPU's) but really the sort of texturing, resolutions and pixel shader effects boasted on Xbox were consistently a cut above PS2.
Games like Splinter Cell made it painfully obvious that porting a game down from Xbox to PS2 resulted in major concessions in both visual detail and level complexity, and generally differences were larger than the gap between lesser PS3 to 360 conversions.
Back then it was easy for me to preference xbox multi-plats due to near universal progressive scan and 5.1surround sound support (yes, at the time I made use of both). Rarely did I encounter multi-platgames that I preferenced on PS2 (MGS2 and SSX Tricky)

Anyway, sorry I went so into this. I was somewhat bothered by MS's re-focused attempt in marketing their 360 hardware this gen. Where initially, they were the "bigger badder better" company from a hardware perspective concerning Xbox. Instead, they opted for streamlined affordability.. and RRoD? shakes head

Eh, the games weren't that much better.

So, if devs were willing to put out slightly better multiplat games on the Xbox compared to the PS2 last gen why do they all strive for parity now and don't even try to release the superior version on the PS3? This is a rhetorical question. We all know the answer.

i think by reaching the full potentials of the ps3 is the right time to start producing 3rd party games with graphics than best ever which means for me that we can enjoy better games from them and bt reaching the maximum of the ps3 dosent means the end of ps3 time line but it ill actually means that developers will be more motivated to produce more games, such an example GOWII (i know its a first party game )was released for the ps2 not the ps3 because Santa Monica studios used knowshow o handle the ps2 much better than the newly released ps3 at that time

sad to say but if a ps4 came out some time soon, i wont be an early adopter like with the ps3. i still see a lot more value/fun out of my ps3. plus my ps3 can play ps1, ps2, and ps3 games. i dont mind waiting till price gets lower even if they take out most of the backward compatibility. theres a lot more life in my ps3 to justify a ps4 upgrade, by then, games for ps4 i'll have my eye on will be a lot cheaper. i'm no stranger to buying a game before i bought the system. thats what i did with marvel vs capcom 2.

I paid 80 bucks for my marvel vs. capcom 2, but it was 2 a half years before they re-release the make over MvC2.

They're only starting to do that now? You're telling me that GoW3 and U2:AT weren't pushing the PS3 to its limits? In that case, I want to see the next title from each of those devs. No, seriously, this is fantastic. And with Sony's support network, it only makes sense that we will see more uniform quality from their first party studios, and any third party studios that wish to partake in the goodness. It's going to be a fantastic few years for exclusives until the PS4 launches and we go through all of this again.
Peace.

P.S. Ben, (Not John, I read the name this time :P) a couple of mistakes in the second quote.

well, there's hope in the third person studios, some great multiplats are using the PS3 as the lead SKU for development of the game, vanquish is one of them, and the game have good grafics, and other one that i am super excited and worried is dead space 2,excited and worried as hell because the new multiplayer mode, i am scared that will put the lengh of the main campaign down because of that.

it will be interesting to see how 3D is done on consoles over the next few years.
i never believed the current consoles would be able to handle 3D, so it will be interesting to see how its done.
though consoles really are starting to show there age, i honestly cant see us going much further with them.
as in, look at the gap between uncharted and uncharted 2, the gap between GOW2 and GOW3.
i dont think we will see many advances till the next generation comes through, especially now that developers seem more interested in 3D than high detail that will just solidify it.
for that reason id love to see new consoles released tomorrow.
sure they would be expensive, no one would buy them but then and only then can we really see 3D put to its full potential which the industry really needs.
3D stuck on these consoles, it wont take off because its not really that impressive.
3D on a PC is a whole other kettle of fish, playing mafia 2 in 3D was absolutely freaking amazing!

Too bad more 3rd party devs don't tell MS to stuff it. We are starting to see games get shorter and shorter. No doubt its because of the lack of storage space on the Xbox. I can see devs choosing to make their games short instead of paying MS for extra discs.
