Games PS3 Owners Wish They Had: Alan Wake

When people around here learned I was playing Alan Wake , they wondered if I might do a review of some kind. Well, that doesn't jive with the PSXE format, of course, but I often spoke highly of the artistic, well-written Xbox 360 exclusive in my editorials and Week in Reviews. We do believe the PS3 exclusive lineup has the edge in terms of measuring-stick games but there are a few exclusives on other platforms PS3 fans wish they had. And now that we learn Remedy might be working on Alan Wake 2 , we're going to say this is the one potential series you'll really miss if you don't own a 360.

Mass Effect is coming to Sony's machine and there's Halo and Gears , but over the years, we've noticed our readership tends to consist of gamers who really appreciate the artistic side of this industry. There's an abnormal number of RPG fans (nothin' wrong with that, either) and a game like Heavy Rain is adored. Uncharted 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 are beloved more for their atmosphere, presentation, scope, feel, and overall substance rather than their technical savvy. This being the case, I'm telling you guys: Alan Wake , while definitely a little repetitive in terms of gameplay, will really make you think. It's an impressive story and a genuinely creepy setting, and it's really unfortunate that it sold so poorly.

It's the game's originality that should appeal to you. Some will say there's very little in the way of originality on the 360 platform but Alan Wake is definitely a beacon. If you don't appreciate the writing, character development, and general sensation provided by the truly freaky atmosphere, you will not like it. You'll just say it's a mediocre third-person shooter, which is a ridiculously ignorant thing to say, but people will still say it…especially people who stick to action games and shooters. Given the artistic productions found on the PlayStation platform in the past (everything from ICO and Shadow of the Colossus to Katamari Damacy to Heavy Rain to LittleBigPlanet ), I'm fairly certain many PS3 owners wish they had Remedy's ambitious, effective title.

Am I saying I want Remedy to put Alan Wake 2 – if it does indeed exist? – on the PS3? Well, not necessarily. Exclusives are the cream of the crop of any platform because developers can focus entirely on that one platform. So in all honesty, I'd rather it remain exclusive to the 360 rather than go multiplatform. Do I think it could've been better had Remedy opted to go exclusive with the PS3…? Well, that's another question. As is, though, Alan Wake is good for the industry, and the artistic-minded should be part of it.

When it was originally in development it was being designed for the PC (first trailers were all PC) and for the 360. Remedy later scrapped the PC version and simply went with the 360.

A game like Alan Wake is lost on the xbox shooter-heavy crowd. The fact it sold so poorly is indicative of this. Bring it to PS3! We'll appreciate it.

Good point, its sales have not been rather average.

Something that I would like to see, but I think that Microsoft owns the rights to it. Maybe we'll get another developer to make a multiplatform release of something similar.
Peace.

They've done that with quite a few games. I'd be far more interested if they were to announce that they were putting the PS2 games on there, as that would be more surprising. Also, a sign for the future to come, but alas no. PSN remains a PS2 free zone.
Peace.

Oldly enough, I own more PS1 games than I do PS2. I know, weird, I'd rather start seeing PS2 games in the store.

Don't like TV sit coms thus don't like how this is like a TV sit com. I found this boring when I played it at my friends house.

really? what do you mean like a sitcom? i dont know much about the game other than its not doing well

Ben Dutka PSXE

Uh…Alan Wake is no sitcom. It's shot like a TV series but it's most definitely a drama. And it would be boring if you only played it for five minutes; it'd be like picking up a book and reading five pages.

Its feels is like a TV show. Sit com was the wrong word I guess. Didn't dig it. I did only play it for a few minutes but after watching my friend play it quite a bit each time I'd go to his house. Even hes bored with it as he just got Uncharted 2 ha. Just not interesting enough for me to want it on the ps3.

To be fair, most of the books Ive read I got hooked within 5 to 10 pages. 🙂

Well, I'm not saying everyone will like it. Let's just say if you liked Heavy Rain – which is very different, but still has similar artistic merits – you might like Alan Wake.

i just picked up alan wake for 27 bucks brand new. i haven't had a chance to play it because i've been busy with castlevania. i bought a 360 for 50 bucks, and alan wake was the reason i bought one.

This is the one game that makes me wish my 360 hadn't died from heavy modding so I could play it. Still don't get why they decided to not release it for the PC.

frylock25

maybe microsoft paid them not to. so that people would only be able to get it on a 360.

LimitedVertigo

Well ya, they're in business with MS but it's still idiotic given the amount of development time and exposure given to the PC version.

Jawknee

It's bizarre to me how devs would rather take MS's bribes then take their chances selling their game to the public on more than one platform. This game certainly would have sold better had it been available for PC as well. Also, stuff like DLC is certainly going to net them more profit by making it available to everyone on day one. Stupid if you ask me. Ha

It's proof of how petty and desperate MS really is. They have one exclusive announced and it's not coming until next year and from what I can see it's just more of the same just like Halo Reach.

They must be worried when they look at what Sony is doing and has lined up. It's like Bwarny Fwank throwing his own money into his campaign now that's he's finally worried about losing his seat. Oh please God let Sean Bielat win. He builds robots that kill terrorists. 🙂

Oh and apparently it could be years before developers figure out how to make hardcore games for Kinect. So I have read. Fail. MS. is scared. That's why we will continue to see them throw money at 3rd party devs. It's desperation time.

@Ben. I've been following this site for sometime now and must say i've been enjoying your articles up until recently. You no longer review games on ps3 alone but also on rival platforms (x360). First halo reach and now alan wake. I find it realy dissapointing. I thought this is a playstation site even your site url says the same. I think i and probably other member of this site wil find this site more interesting if you sticked to playstation related stuff. If we wanted xbox stuff, we know where to get it.

if you dont want to read about it then dont read about it. we are all gamers here and want to know what he thinks since he played it. its not like just cuz this is a ps site we have to act like the other systems and games on those systems dont exist. this is called an editorial for one, and something that the fanbase has asked for. if you were a long time reader like you say you would know such a thing. your opinion is not indicative of this entire site.

since Ben owns a 360 and occasionally wipes the dust off of it to pop in a game he sometimes lets us know. some of us here own one system. some of us own 2, some own all 3. this editorial in no way gimps his reporting the news nor does it ruin the site. if you dont like it there are plenty of other fanboy sites on the net. this is an open community of gamers that wants to talk about GAMES. see the trend?

this is also not a review. there is no score nor did he go about this like a review. in fact he did relate this whole article to the playstation the whole time. maybe your reading comprehension needs work.

People don't just come here for Playstation news but also Ben's personal opinions on anything and everything related to gaming. Most people own multiple consoles and I see no reason to ignore interesting games just because they're not on a Sony system.

If you actually read his thoughts on games that currently aren't available on the PS systems you'd see he talks about why those with Playstations should be interested in them.

He's never reviewed an Xbox game on this site. Yes he's suggested we play other games on other platforms, hardly a review. Bens an equal opportunity gamer. He's just advising us there is other stuff to play on other platforms that we also might enjoy. We trust his opinion so that's why I see problem with this.

Besides, he's an admin, he can post what he wants. 😉

@ Tokky:

This isn't just a PS3 gaming site, even though you may assume so by the URL. The only platform that seems to have no merit to some, is PC's (To each their own I guess). If you don't like it, there are certainly a plethora of PS3 only sites…like Sony's forums for example.

Tokky: You're confusing us and the readership with a blind fansite. None of us here qualify. Also, this isn't a review; we've never reviewed anything but PlayStation titles, as I mentioned in the article.

I doubt any of our regulars or people who understand what PSXE is about will have a problem with this. If you do, like I said, you misunderstand this site and those that run it and read it.

I do have a suggestion for an editorial though Ben. Just let us interview you. Possibly omitting certain questions by LV about your sexuality. 🙂

Tokky,
Here at PSXE, even though we're a Playstation oriented site, we're still gamers first and in the end, that's all that really matters.

So of course most of us would like to know about a good title(that's only exclusive to another console), that would be a perfect fit on the PS3 too.

Now with that said, I'm a gaming collector & own 20 consoles and hand-held's(so far), and since one of those consoles is a 360, I thank Ben for informing me of one of the few truly rarefied & unique titles out for it.

I don't hate the 360, but I DO hate the unscrupulous, conniving, gamer back-stabbing, company who owns the brand!!!!

The article should read, 'Platforms that Rememdy wishes they could port their IP to'. I would've gotten this on PC, day 1, but yeah, MS had to go and ruin that for everyone.

I hope they really enjoy buoying a company they basically crippled by enforcing exclusivity. Let's see, in 20 weeks of business they've oved 750K units…of a game that was announced PRIOR to the launch of Gran Turismo 5 (as PC/360 exclusive, no less). As far as I'm aware, the majority of interest was from the PC community. To put that in perspective, Heavy Rain outsold this game in it's first 3 weeks.

Would I like to play it? Sure, but not for the cost of a 360+Game, just isn't worth it. And it's satisfying to see Remedy get bent over for it, hopefully they'll force a little more autonomy from MS.

Likely because it didnt have Call of Duty, Halo or Gears of War in the title. 😉

I have no problem with the 360. It its a good machine when it works. But I do have issues with MS. It seems that when they decided to enter the game industry the plan was to not only compete but to also cripple the competition at whatever costs. Even if it means zero integrity towards the gaming community. MS plays dirty. Especially on their home turf. Is there such a thing as a fair fight?

Mornelithe

Actually you're right, Microsoft doesn't own Remedy (If I were Remedy, I'd be seriously pissed at MS lol). But, for all intents and purposes on this game, they basically own it. They got distribution rights by covering development costs. Gave them the power to determine which platforms it released on.

Didn't Alan Wake need a wake after the sales numbers were announced? You'd think that the developer would want to go multi to at least increase the possible market for the game.

Of course, MS probably owns the rights, so perhaps not…
