They're two of Capcom's most beloved franchises…or at least, they were. The question is whether or not we'll ever see them again.
Fans want to know: what happened to Onimusha and Dino Crisis ? Will they ever come back? Well, Capcom VP of Strategic Planning and Business Development Christian Svennson told IGN that the franchises aren't dead; the company is just trying to figure out how to bring them back for "modern day gamers." Said Svensson:
"Onimusha is tricky in particular given how Japanese-focused the franchise has been. When you look at the timing and sales trend of how Onimusha has gone each outing – I won't give you the exact numbers, but let's just say every outing subsequently has been about 60% of the prior – the brand doesn't right now have quite the resilience that you might think."
He pointed out that while the first two Onimusha titles were very successful; the last two…"not so much." He did admit an announcement might be coming soon, though, as the Onimusha name is "percolating" at the company. As for Dino Crisis , he says it has come up in several discussions but thus far, nobody has figured out a good way to bring it back.
"Dino Crisis 3 I think is where it went off the rails if I recall. Dino Crisis' success really was an out cropping of Resident Evil 1 and 2. There are discussions, Dino Crisis comes up from time to time, but there isn't any burning desire from R&D or the business side to light that franchise back up again. Until there's an internal champion with something incredible, things just sort of sit there."
Svensson added that the the pre-rendered backgrounds and tank controls probably wouldn't go over well today. Well, yeah, we could've told you that. Still, we definitely want to see another Onimusha . Figure it out, Capcom.
""Onimusha is tricky in particular given how Japanese-focused the franchise has been."
So they have finally met the game that is SO Japanese they can't westernize it. Is that why they laugh at the idea of another Onimusha?
I never played an Onimusha game but that blond dude in Tatsunoko vs Capcom was pretty cool.
I bought all 3 when they came out and loved them all. You're missing out.
If they make some HD remakes i'll buy. 🙂
Did the same as LV. Loved the Onimushas.
Ben the new Netflix is GREAT on the PS3. I'm assuming we'll be getting an article on it?
What for? We already did the Netflix update story.
Well yeah but you did it before its actual release thus you weren't able to give an impression on the new layout/features/yadayada. Plus I figured if you can give us a Fight Night: Lights Out article you can surely do a Netlfix one.
Fine, be mean!
The 3rd one was the best but I like the last one also, as well as the the 1st two.
LOL Well, this is a preview, not an article. And I don't think there's that much to say concerning Netflix…besides, I'm a little busy here.
But maybe you'd prefer that Netflix article to my LBP2 impressions, ZHP/Vanquish/DJ Hero 2 reviews, etc. 😉
🙂 Even when an article's subject matter isn't the most interesting to me I still take the time to read what you have to say. You can be sure of that!
Onimusha was WAY WAY WAY before its time. It looked great on PS2. Don't let that be the only thing that'll sway your decision.
And I s'pose it would be hard to westernize because correct me if i'm wrong, but the 1st one was based loosely of the actual person Lord Nobunaga, some people described him as a demon, Which the game depicts, and some describe him as a saint. I'm not clear on the history but I'm sure that throws a wrench in the mix.
as for D.C. Didn't the 1st 1 or 2 take place in Raccoon City?
What about the 4th one, LV?
You are somewhat correct! Oda Nobunaga was one of the first men to make an attempt to unify Japan during the warring states period. Most of the history that appeared in the Onimusha games was pretty accurate.
i can't speak on behalf of LV, but the 4th one was the black horse of the Onimusha series. I loved the first three though espicially the one with Jean Reno
The first two Onimusha's in HD would probably look pretty crappy. If you remember, the BG's were pre-rendered 2D images(but they had some 3D effects etc)
Playing those two titles on a big HD TV would really bring to the forefront the low-res pixels.
Hopefully, they have high-res source material they could go back to for any HD remakes.
Mad,
I didn't care for the 4th one. It felt like a rushed product and was released at the end of the PS2's prime instead of on the PS3 which pissed me off. I consider Onimusha to be a trilogy.
I wonder if I'd like being bombarded with having to play games. Gaming is my favorite free-time activity. It would sort of suck to have to think of it as work.. I think, I dunno
Only if Samanosuke doesn't look like a queer Vampire reject.
Dino Gears of War and God of Onimusha.
I can see it happening.
Especially since Capcom has decided to use western developers for existing IPs.
Onimusha is the 5th or 6th (can't remember which) best selling Capcom series.
MAKE ANOTHER ONE
if what Capcom is saying true then they would probably in up doing what they did to DMC which handing the project to some other studio.
think about how much backlash that game is getting right now. I don't know I want to see another onimusha title as well but maybe they should let it go, I mean with the kinda of decisions they've been making recently it probably wouldn't work out.
AAAnd, look at some of the great series they messed up this gen that they did THEMSELVES!! RE and DMC(even before Twilight Dante/smackhead Dante from NT)both took a nosedive this gen and alongside all the other daft decisions(like the Grin games)would we REALLY trust Capcom not to mess these up if they rebooted them OR if they farm them out?
They already released crap last entries in BOTH series with DC3 and the last Oni game being painful in comparison to the early, great efforts. I just don't have ANY faith in Capcom whatsoever outside of SF or MH really.
Oh my god new Onimusha. This series has been my fav since 2001!Capcom you need to make the new Onimusha a PS3 Exclusive!
Please keep Samonosuke as the hero!

So Onimusha isn't popular at all. 60% of the prior?? Brutal.
<caps> Modern Gamers Want Japanese-focused Games</caps>
Damn you Capcom. Get your sh*t together for God's sake man! What are you Square Enix? We don't want watered down mass-idiot-appeal games. Grow a pair. If you can't get people interested in Japanese swordplay and f*cking Dinosaurs then you don't deserve to be in the business.
..and yet the masses eat up anything with Halo and CallofDuty on the cover.
Face it, videogames are becoming fast food. Why spend forever creating an amazing dish that could easily cost $50 when you can slap cheap meat and bread together and sell it to the masses for a huge profit.

It makes me a sad, sad ninja.
Speaking of Ninja….please bring him back….I beg you. Hell I'll even take the parking lot Ninja if that's what it takes.
I'll think about it. But I think I need something else that suits my mood at the moment.
2 girls 1 cup?
That might not make it past the censors. Censor. Ben. And God help me if that ever suits my mood.
Oh come on, its no different than watching people get slimed in Double Dare.
LimitedVertigo You just had too mention 2 girls 1 cup. Yuck! But sense I have a twisted sense of humor might I recommend googling 2 girls 1 finger, go to second link, its the one that says free in the link. Watch all of them. I warn you some things can't be unseen!
^
I got mid-chub within 10seconds, thanks!
Dino Crisis appealed to me as much as the old RE games did. (I haven't played DC3, not going to)
Onimusha was great too! Very good indeed!
I would love to see their return on the PS3 (or Xbox 360 and I completely agree with Limited Vertigo on his statement, ANYBODY (maybe not the PS3 community? :PP) would buy anything with Halo or CoD on it. All my classmates play those games and when i tell them about something like Shadow of the Colossus, they go "WTF ZIS IS CRAP HALO REACH FTW WIN PEW PEW".
Seriously? =[
Do any of your friends live near the GW bridge?
pew pew.lol
@ LV
U are such a bad bad man .lol
heheheheeh………mwahahahaaha………..::fart::
onimusha eh
loved the idea gameplay is boring as crap, make it like zelda64-style camera and it could be lotta fun, keep doing that resident evil fixed cam and you can count me out
GW bridge…?
It could be a stupid question, but what is it?
George Washington, it's meant as a VERY sick and twisted joke. If you don't get it you're for the better.
Oh LV, you made me chuckle 🙂
Well LV, you found one I didn't get.
If you went to Rutgers you would get it.
HAHAHA!! Dammit man, you're a sick boy. But that's why I love reading your posts.
LV,
You're from the NYC/NJ area too?
The problem with the last 2 Onimusha's is they sucked. Not so much that the franchise doesn't have a following, but the following doesn't buy crap games. Bring the series back to what made it amazing, ala 1 and 2, and scrap the BS that was 3 and 4.
Of course, any new Onimusha game would absolutely be a day 1 purchase for me, so they kinda get my money either way. But, if they want them to be successes, then they should definitely move away from what didn't work in the later installments.
he 4th onimusha might not have been the best, but it didn't suck either, & are you kidding me the 3rd one was the best of the series.
