It's always interesting to see how many copies an exclusive game can sell.

One of the best games of the generation should sell a bunch of copies, regardless of the fact that it's only available on one platform. So we leave it up to you to determine if the current sales total for God of War III is enough: it has been brought to our attention that SCEA's masterpiece has just passed the 3 million mark worldwide. The numbers aren't official unless they're from the NPD but VGChartz is often close and just for the sake of argument and discussion, let's assume GoWIII is right around 3 million. Now, the question is, what do you think…? Should it be selling more, even if it's only available on the PS3? Or can this be considered a rip-roaring success? Other PS3 exclusives, like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , have managed to perform impressively on the charts, and GoWIII's numbers are in line with those titles. Well, for the most part.

We just hope the developers continue to be satisfied with the sales totals, so they'll continue to provide gamers with unbelievable experiences. There's no doubt that exclusives tend to be the cream of the crop for any platform; a designer's dedication to one particular platform has proven beneficial over the years.

Santa montica is not cocky and they have faith in their fans, it doesn't matter if it surpassed the 3 mil mark, it's a good game. plus they worked their ass off for it too.

I think that's fine, $180,000,000 fine if everyone bought it new and for the full new price (which I think it would have to be new to make it a 'sale' for true retail and such?)

But I bet Ninja Theory would think that's not enough…

3 Million is a very good figure. Most games only can dream of a total like that. The game will only sell more as time goes on gaining another 1 to 2 mil in future.

What's wrong with this…past iterations didn't become mega super blockbusters either. But then again, this game cost way more than the others. Personally, I think its good right now, but lifetime is another story. GOWIII is only worth full admission if you played the past entries and feel like replaying a 9+ hr game. I have replayed it 6 times, so it was worth the money. But today, many new comers or MP oriented player can just rent this and beat it in two or three days and leave it at that. That's what I did with Mafia II and Bayonetta. But all in all, I think the sells are at a good pace. I mean its doing better in America than Uncharted 1/2. I don't think it will reach MGS4 sale figures, but I can't say never. Anyway…great game, deserves to be played, but if I had to choose between a GOWIII and lets say Demons Souls, I would buy Demons Souls because I have put at least 200hrs into it aftter beating it 8 times. GOWIII on 6 completetions took me only 52 hrs. But then again, GOWIII is a game you need in your PS3 collection…enough said. Still need Resistance 2.

So I got thumbed down for choosing a game with more value over another. If people would rather waste their money on a 9hr experience rather than an 30Hr+ experience (most RPG's or Rockstar games)…then go right ahead, but don't get mad because I'm being honest. It makes so much sense. I mean I paid full price of Heavy Rain and that only lasted 7hrs, but I have the money…so not a big deal. But if someone is buying a game to tide them over, then a great experiece that can last weeks is worth the buck in the end. I bought GOWIII because I am a fan and I know quality.

Gauge your success by the number of thumbs up. If the thumbs down totals are lower than 5, I don't think anything of it.

Heck, some of us actually have thumbs down stalkers! (That's when you REALLY know you're successful!)

It's a good number but in my mind it's not enough given how awesome the game is. It's not that I don't disagree that a COD or GTA title can have very high sales on the ps3 but I think that the top spot should be an exclusive.

I think MW2 holds the most sales on the ps3 so I'm hoping GT5 can surpass it.

It hasnt even been a year and they've sold 3 million. Thats impressive.

I do wonder how GT5 will affect other games' sales though. I know a lot of people will be buying a PS3 when GT5 is out, and they'll need other games to play as well. Is it plausible to expect a slight surge in sales for games like GoW and Uncharted a little after GT5's release?

Lawless SXE
Lawless SXE

That's a feasible theory, but I think that most anyone who wants GT5 will already have a PS3, and the games to go along with it. I'd like to see what you're saying become a reality though… Maybe former 360-ers?
Peace.

I absolutely do not think that is enough copies. If the PS3 user base was 5 million I'd accept it, but at nearly 35 million?? GoWIII selling 3 million is embarrassing. What the hell is wrong with people?

NoSmokingBandit
NoSmokingBandit

Look at it this way.
According to wikipedia, the ps2 has sold ~145m units and the best selling game is GTA:SA at 17m copies. That means 1 in 8.5 ps2 owners have a copy of GTA:SA.
According to wikipedia there are ~38m ps3s out there. With 3m copies of GoW that means that 1 in 12.6 ps3 owners have a copy of GoW3.
Not too shabby considering GoW has only been out about 8 months whereas SA has been out for a few years now. The holiday season should move quite a few copies, though they'd have to get up to 4.7m copies sold with no new ps3s sold to match GTA:SA's success, but time will tell.

Oddly, MW2 has sold 4.8m on the ps3 (once again, wiki as the source, which i admit may not be 100% accurate). That means 1 in 8 ps3 owners have a copy of MW2. So theres a higher ratio of ps3 owners with MW2 than there are ps2 owners with GTA:SA.

It's also important to consider the used game market. Gamestop reported much success with their promotions with used GOW3 sales. For a time, you could pick up used copies of GOW3 for $19.99.

I tried digging around to find the exact numbers of used GOW3 sales versus new GOW3 sales, but came up with nothing other than weak estimates. But the trend I'm seeing is that Gamestop has had more than one GOW3 used sale going on over the past year. I would also not be surprised to see a high number of trade ins on GOW3. Not because it's a bad game (it's amazing) but because it's short. A lot of people might not play the same game over and over again.

Either way, I think there are likely far more GOW3 players out there than there are actual sales.

Good point. This is one of the few games I bought new. I basically buy the PS3 exclusives new, Uncharted 1/2, KZ2, MGS4, Resistance 1/2, GOWIII, Heavy Rain, MNR, Demon's Souls, VC, etc… and whatever new exclusives come. I buy multiplats used and all 360/Wii games used, unless I can get a new game for less than a used one (Toys ‘R’ Us’ B2G1 on new game sales).

Good point Underdog. I gamefly'd it for a month, beat it on hard first playthrough. Beat all the challenges in an hour and played around with the create your own challenge mode before it wore thin on me. Then I saw that there was no replay value unless you are a trophy whore, which I am not, and I sent it right back. Now, I can purchase it for 17.99 minus my 5 gamefly reward dollars, and end paying $14 and some odd change for it, but why? I can't seem to give myself a reason, and I own the first original two and Chains of Olympus, and plan on renting Ghost of Sparta in Nov.

Underdog makes an important point.

Some people (apparently including Alienange) greatly overestimate the percentage of console owners who actually buy a given game. Percentages higher than 10% are quite rare and NO game other than a pack-in sells to anywhere near 60% of the owners of a system (as per the figures Alienange suggested).

I think that is a pretty good number but considering the game that it is and the quality therein I kinda wish it would be a higher number.

But what really matters, I guess, is that Santa Monica is happy with that total.

I will never understand why most PS3 owners don't support its exclusives like the Xbots do Halo or Gears. Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and God of War III are clearly way better games yet they haven't seen the says those other two(arguably uninspired and boring) franchise have.

It should have sold more. Same with Uncharted 2.

The only thing I can think of is that 360 kids basically are all into the exact same thing. PS3 fans are a more diverse crowd.

Yea i supposed that could be it. In fact that probably is the case. Most of us like variety. Theres is much for us to buy not all of us can buy everything. Theres only Halo and Gears on the 360 so….it's no wonder they sell well. Theres not much to look forward to in the future.

I'm going to guess it has something to do with the LIVE vehicle that those games ride on. I think MS got that head start with the competitive online shooter market and have created something of a culture of gamer-type who feeds off those games specifically. I would imagine that many of those gamers aren't as interested in "bests" when it's outside of their sphere of genre interests; that is, the games that look and play like CoD and Halo which harbor the bulk of their time spent gaming.

Sony's successes appear to have been more diversified in content over the years. Their vehicle has been more technology forward: 3D, blu-ray, dvd, polygonal-3D etc.

I think Sony will continue pushing their products by shaping overall consumer electronic entertainment interests. MS tends to take a back-seat approach with this. SOny helped generate the hype that defined CD's, DVDs, HDTVs + 1080p ,BD's, 3D etc. The sort of games that are created are to serve the standard that Sony sets.
MS has done little to pioneer anything on this end. Their angle is their LIVE market (a service) and Halo (a sub-cultural of gaming entertainment)

Anyway, what I'm saying is that the motives that draw consumer dollars on MS's platform is different than the motives that propel Sony's platform.
MS may claim higher Halo or CoD sales, but MS isn't getting a cut from every Blu_Ray movie sold (a stream of revenue coming in independent from games) like Sony is.
In the end, I'd imagine Sony will be more profitable with their business model.

Because more kids own Xbox, so their parents buy them every game and they have infinite time to do anyting. More adults own PS3's and most of them know a thing called money management and on top of that, most of us don't have time to play every game. Therefore, Xbox 360 always has higher sales because basically kids want everything. Most games don't even sale this much anyway. I mean RDR hasn't even sold this much alone on PS3.

Godslim does have a point though. Everyone on this site is as bias as any crowd, it just this crowd has more in common (love for the PS brand)…thus less immature chatter. I mean I could think of alot of games I would buy ahead of some PS3 exclusives. Yes, they are great games, but some games just have higher value to people with different preferences. I enjoyed Red Faction more Infamous. It depends on preference.

Shams
Shams

Godslim,

It is true Lair and Haze were duds (more so Haze), but, Dude! Out of how many?

Let's count:
Uncharted 2, Uncharted:DF, Killzone 2, InFamous, Demon's Souls, GOW3, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, R&C:FTOD, R&C:ACIT, Resistance:FOM, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chornicles, Yakuza 3, Heavenly Sword, ModNation Racers, MotorStorm, Motorstorm:PR…18.

That's about 10% dud rate. And if we consider only 1st party exclusives, we have a 0% dud rate.

Now that's not counting the great PSN titles, either, of which we have quite a few (like Wipeout HD/Fury, Flower, Echochrome, Super Stardust, Shatter, Pixel Junk series, etc..).

So, please let me know if the nonexclusive "dud" ratio is anywhere near as low. Because to me, this is not fanboy bias. This is statistics.

Oh C,mon! Some of you guys are just you're being unfair when it comes to the 360 I mean don't get me wrong I grew up on the PlayStation systems but at the same time the 360 despite the whole Red ring of death stuff has great games to offer other than just halo or gears, the 360 has a great library of games as well not nearly as much as all PlayStation systems put to 2gether but it has it's fair share. As far as GOW3 goes it sold about what I thought it would & 3 million is alot considering it's an action/adventure game & not a shooter.

I don't get why GoW III is so good? I get the AMAZING graphics, which is true, but the gameplay to me seems so…. eh… I mean it is a lot of the same fighting moves and not even a euphoria/havok engine. I understand why Halo is so big (not Gears of War, that is a bad TPS). Halo is fun, with a lot of different weapons and customization of maps and such. I mean, I am surprised Uncharted 2 was GOTY. Sure the story was fun, but it wasn't long and multiplayer lacks in some. I don't know why sometimes…

Jawknee,

They do.

Do the math: top PS3 exclusives sell to roughly the same percentage of PS3 owners as top 360 exclusives sell to 360 owners. The only real anomaly is Halo, but Gears 1/2 and Uncharted 1/2 or MGS4 are very close.

I agree about the recycled chamber stuff. GoW2 got more and more epic as time progressed. Many of the best moments of GoW3 happened during the first 2/3's. Still, I love the game anyway. But GoW2 really has something special still.

2 was wth out a doubt the best. As far as progression and story. And it being on the PS2 was awesome looking. But 3 was not bad at all. It was dark and was about revenge. I do feel there wasn't a ton to the story but did their need to be? I think we all knew what was going to happen once the second ended.

But honestly I think 3 implemented so many new elements like some first person beat downs, seeing a character get pummeled through their eyes, and my personal favorite the 2d battle with Zeus! Little things maybe, but those things made the game epic to me! Not to mention Kratos is with out a doubt one of the most detailed characters in any game! GoW 3 is BA no doubt!

The boss battles were also way better in GoW3 than in any. The game started out with a huge battle and ended with an amazing fight! I loved it!
