Sometimes, we all need to sit back and have a chuckle. If you're in need of a bit of comic relief, we're here to help you out this lovely evening.

Best Buy's Geek Squad has a great offer for prospective PlayStation 3 owners. As you can gather by the pic posted here, and as found by DualShockers , they will perform an invaluable service if you wish to toss 'em a few extra bucks. As most of you know, a PS3 slim typically costs $299 but at Best Buy, it might cost you $329…just don't expect a free game or accessory in the package. No, the geniuses in the Geek Squad did something else for your thirty bucks- they opened up the box, hooked up the system, and downloaded the most recent firmware update for you. …okay, now before you start laughing, we think we know why this new deal exists. See, the PS3 won't be able to support 3D Blu-Ray movies unless it has the new firmware update, so…unless, wait…don't PS3s ship with the latest firmware installed? Or don't they? I'm not really sure… But either way, it's $30 for something most everyone can do at home, and it's just plain amusing.

However, if anybody wants to come up with a more logical reason as to why this deal exists, feel free to let us know. It can't just be another big retail chain looking to milk the public for a few extra bucks, can it? …impossible.

This is just another way to make money. I just go on the Network and do it for free and spend the thirty dollars on food or some DLC!

I think what there doing is trying is making the non gamers fork over some cash because of a non gamers lack of knowledge for the free updates. A new buyer probably wants to buy the system for the 3D so they can trust Geek Squad with the updates or they think they have to go to Geek Squad in order to play the 3D movies with their new 3D TV. Most people these days are probably buying the PS3 for the Blue-ray player and 3D games and cause it does "Everything."

Oh, you're buying this as a gift for your son? Well then you need the firmware upgrade, which we will throw in for $30, and can I interest you in any HDMI cables? I'd recommend the Monster cables, as they will give you better audio and video quality than any other cables.

I could so work at Best Buy. Although I guess thats not saying much.

Lol! So someone goes to buy a PS3 and the geek squad says they'll update your firmware. What if that ps3 has the most up to date firmware, and the buyer doesn't know it? Are they going to be spending $30 towards coffee and donuts for the geek squad instead? xD

One could argue that. However (I hope this is not ignorant) who is buying a ps3 that doesn't already have access to wifi or can't plug it in via ethernet cord?

Even if you can't do that, you can use your PC to download it onto a flashdrive.

Folks, maybe some people don't even have an internet connection, therefore they wouldn't be able to update the firmware via the PS3 or a PC. Maybe they don't play games with it either so getting it via a disc wouldn't be an option either. You know some older couple maybe just bought it for the sole use of it being a blu-ray player, and in that sense, a service like this would be useful.

And PS3's do ship with the latest firmware, but if stock is already on the shelf and a new firmware comes out between the time it is sold, then it will require the latest one too.

well its the same thing they do with your laptop when you buy it. They are going to tell you it'll cost 100$ for install and backup and the funny thing is all the laptops they sell come with windows pre-installed and you just have to run through a few clics and let the machine set itself up XD XD XD The machine even asks you if you want to create a backup disc by inserting a dvd lol. Thats one hell of a job they do for a 100$ and whats more you only get your computer a day later because of that fake work XD

Best Buy is that desperate? Lol anyway, I bet a lot of clueless customers will fall of this. Next, Best Buy will start charging $20 to charge your controller.

Best Buy, isn't going to have each PS3 connect to the internet, they're just going to use a flash drive to update them.

Geek squad are pieces of $hit that have no roof on their inflation. The only reason I could see doing this is if you don't have an internet connection at your house but you still want all the nifty things associated with an update.

Crazy thing is alot of new comers might think they are actually getting a deal then when another inevitable firmware update becomes available and they have to download it…then they will realize their mistake…lol Thought best buy was one of the good guys…well human instinct always fails

Well, Best Buy has a lot of over priced stuff. I remember seeing a game at 30 something bucks and went to Best Buy and it's at a release date price of 50+ dollars.

Or maybe they wait longer to drop the prices, but I'm not sure they should keep up to competition prices so more people would go to the store.

It's funny they want to charge for this, since they really don't have any PS3 ad's in the weekly ad's.

I wish someone can tell me why Best buy, wal-mart, target and toy-r-us do not really have ps3 in their ad's. Does MS offer money or something.

new ps3s do not come with the latest firmware. it takes at least 3 weeks to go from manufacturing to store shelves. then who knows how long it sits on the shelf. i just bought two ps3s this week (so i can mod them to do homebrew). one had 3.41 one had 3.21. so i guess it depends on the manufacturing date.
