Firmware update 3.50 for the PlayStation 3 not only added full 3D compatibility for Blu-Ray movies, but it has also disabled several third-party devices.

This according to an update at the official PlayStation boards , which confirms that 3.50 has disabled "75% of 3rd-party USB Adapters." This may also impact some third-party controllers, too, if you read the explanation:

"Counterfeit PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates."

Basically, the controller won't work if it connects via USB and if it isn't licensed by Sony; there are plenty of third-party controllers that should function just fine. Obviously, this is in response to recent hacking attempts, which have seen much publicity on the Internet. For the most part, we recommend Sony-licensed accessories at all times…I distinctly recall losing 30 hours of Front Mission 3 and the first 5 hours of Vagrant Story data on an EB-branded memory card…

My USB cable came with the console so that should be okay right?

Many won't be pleased with this but hey, blame it on the PSJailbreak people.

TheHighlander

The USB cables are not the problem, USB cables are simply cables and will continue to work (unless there is something really odd about the cable). This change affects the controllers themselves, or controller adapters that allow third part controllers or non-PS3 controllers to work. I don't think this has been reported to affect USB storage devices. The only people this will affect is those using unlicensed accessories or fakes.

Fake controllers are unfortunately widespread, and are visually extremely close to the Sony originals. As for the unlicensed things, Sony specifically states in the warranty that the use of third party accessories is at your own risk, and Sony is not responsible for any damage that a third party accessory causes to you or your PS3. They are under no obligation to even support unlicensed accessories.

Mr Highlander, you never ceased to amaze me.
Are you an engineer or something like that?

Serious question man.

Hardware geek perhaps. The stars did not align right when I left university and I ended up going a different path (software development, support and more general IT and Business Systems), but I could (and would have enjoyed) going the hardware route.

So I keep up where I can with the hardware, and the PS3 has always been of interest to me, even before it existed, because of the Cell architecture which I think is awesome. In my career now, I am too far from the real nuts and bolts to move into hardware. I guess the best way to phrase it is that I know enough to be dangerous. LOL!

Highlander do rock indeed, but really, you don't have to be a scientist to understand the difference between a cable and a hardware device. (Sorry I just had to let that off my chest. Call me a grumpy SOB by hitting the right thumb (literary speaking).)

But on topic: One thing I do wish the hardware manufacturers out there would just stfu about is making those stupid claims about anything but their products "may ignite or explode". For example a radio from Phillips, with label saying "only to be used with Phillips batteries". It's just so stupid.
Of course 3rd party controllers won't explode. Where is the source of that energy? Has anyone seen any 3rd party controllers with a packet of c4 attached lately? All they will do is make Sony potentially sell one less controller.

Not necessarily. There are third party controllers and accessories out there that ARE licensed by Sony. Some have been advertised out here.

The big ones are the fakes trying to be LIKE the sony stuff. Usually you can find them made in China or up for purchase on EBAY shipping from somewhere like Hong Kong.

Basically, just do your research. Turtle Beach accessories should still work swimmingly, for example.

I have a Turtle Beach USB headset and it works just fine, even since the update.

I can't really blame people for buying a non-sony controller. I haven't bought one myself but heck a regular controller costs the same as a new game so it can be tempting I guess.

you can get the controllers for $40-45 if you know where to look
3rd party controllers are generally crap because they have a plug in dongle that takes up the usb ports so alot of the new users have even less reasons to buy one
i have the old ps3 with 4 usb ports and i do not want to waste a port on ir or 2.4ghz when i got blutooth quality

You mean those things that are blocked by an injunction and disabled by firmware? Perhaps Sony needs to sue Google for advertising something that is clearly sold for illegal purposes…?

@Ben Dutka,
I am not sure if you already know of this device but would this effect the eagle eye converter? If you have not heard of it here is the link mate http://www.ps3vault.com/eagle-eye-converter-to-upset-balance-in-online-fps-multiplayer-12005

Thanks in advance.

Underdog15

Hey, maybe I can field this for you.

Although I'm not sure about that particular device, I would do some quick research. There are still non-sony companies, like Turtle Beach, who make accessories for the PS3 that are still licensed by Sony.

Please note: This update does NOT mean you may only use items with a SONY brand name on it. It merely needs to be licensed by Sony for use. Many PROFESSIONAL accessories WILL work!

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

The target in this is not so much 3rd party accessories as it is counterfeit controllers/accessories and of course devices capable of being programed to act in the same way as the cloned service keys. Sony appears to have done a decent job in their targeting. But because it's a relatively imprecise target, there will be some cases where a perfectly legitimate device stops working.

Fine with me, the DS3 is the second best controller out there, second only to the DS2.

Wirelss is sweet but when it fall you really have no chance of saving it.

My DS3 fell down a lot while my DS2 fell down but hit the floor less often cause I can grab the wire.

"Hacking attempts"

Ps3 is hacked lol

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

No, it isn't, not really. If it was hacked you could by a retail unit with firmware 3.5 and on it in Debug mode and play game backups. But you can't. So it's *not* hacked. I also dispute the description of PS Jailbreak as a hack. It's nothing of the sort it is a service key that was obtained by people who promote piracy and then cloned and some cobbled together backup utility.

Incidentally, PS Jailbreak (and the open source versions) is now blocked, legally and technically.

This disabled my Dualshock3's wireless abilities, which I believed to be genuine. It, however, must have been counterfeit. Even though it came from China, it was identical and even had identical packaging. I was super pissed.

So I went to Walmart today and bought a Red one which I ordered some accessories for (jacket, thumbstick grips, triggers) to turn it into my IronMan controller!

DS3s are wayyyyy overpriced. Don't buy any off Ebay, they are all fake.

They are if they are licensed accessories. But I bet that a large variety of wireless (not BlueTooth) controllers will be covered by this because they use a USB transceiver that most likely is targeted by this – unless they are licensed peripherals. Not sure how Sony is doing that though.
