Normally, Sony keeps to themselves. After reading comments and press releases from Sony executives for almost four years, I rarely see them mention the competition.

But every once in a while, it's nice to buck the trend. SCEA Senior Vice President of Marketing Peter Dille took a subtle jab at Microsoft during an interview with The[A]ListDaily , and his comment is bound to incite some arguments. There's no denying that shooters are big and if one were to compare the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 lineup – especially concerning exclusives – one might conclude that Microsoft's library is…well, pretty heavily inundated with one particular genre. And recently, Microsoft UK boss Neil Thompson told CVG they want even more shooters . All of this may have prompted Dille's comment:

"We've never been reliant on one product genre like one of our competitors.

[Sony has] titles ranging from Killzone to EyePet. PlayStation is a very big tent and … it's helped us sell 377 million PlayStation hardware products and two billion software products in 15 years."

That first sentence right there is incendiary in nature, no doubt. But is it true? Well, it isn't difficult to compare the top titles lists for both consoles; we'll leave that to you. Sony continues to close on Microsoft in the worldwide sales tally, although new releases like Halo: Reach will temporarily prevent the gap from closing entirely. Then again, Reach is…well, what Dille said.

And this is why I think the PlayStation 2 is still the best console on the face of the planet even with all the amazing games on PS3.

VARIETY and the MASSIVE LIBRARY.

I mean think about it, wouldn't a PS2 still be a great christmas present? I mean think about a family who couldn't be able to afford much…but a used slim ps2 for $50 or so. And then all the fantastic games in the library. A MYRIAD of RPGs, Action & Adventure, Shooters, Hack & Slash Racing, Sports, and what more do you want?

It's just a fantastic buy.

I know that the PS3 will soon be just like the PS2 in that regard, especially with its different exclusives.

Heavy Rain. Killzone 2/3. Resistance 1/2/3. God of War III. Uncharted 1/2. Metal Gear Solid 4. Yakuza 3/4/Of the End. Disgaea 3 (I've played it for just an hour…and I LOVED IT). Valkyria Chronicles (sure wish 3 came out on this).

AND GRAN TURISMO 5 ladies and gentlemen – GRAN TURISMO F***ING 5!

And of course so much more – inFamous, Demon Souls, and the list just continues.

It'll gradually grow and be like or even better than its predecessor.

As for now in my personal honest opinion, I don't think it's there yet. PS2 4ever!

I'm sure glad they don't rely on one genre, especially FPS, or I wouldn't own a PS3. Now if it was JRPGs….well that's a different story, I'd probably own three.

just out of interest do alot of ppl actually own more than one ps3, just wondering why? or is it figure of speech? is it for different rooms? That should be a poll question actually.
I mean i understand why ppl may want more than 1 360 if its their main console cos of their award winning reliability.

I *do* own three….

Variety is the spice of life. We have three because I game, my wife got hooked on JRPGs and then Burnout Paradise and Civilization Revolutions and so now she has her own PS3. My son is in his teens and – surprise – likes video games so he has a PS3 for his games. Then there are the two, soon to be three PSPs…

If Sony were to behave like A. N. Other gaming company and rely heavily on shooters, I might have a PS3 and PSP, but the family would have gone elsewhere. Sony has always had a very broad audience and knows that is a virtue because it drives major sales.

I own two. I bought a 60gb less than a year after it was released. It broke 3 years later, then the slim came out so I ought one of those. Then I got my 60gb fixed. So I mostly use my Slim for gaming and my 60gb for Netflix in the bedroom.

The variety in genres not only opens up different gamer demographics, based on age-group, genre-interest, possibly gende,r etc, but different parts of the world. Japanese, for instance, are more into Fighters and RPG's than FPS.

So variety, in the long run is good. I'd rather have 2 killzones, 2 Uncharteds, 2 LBP's, 2 MotorStorms, 2 inFamouses, and a Demon's Souls, than 4 Halo iterations, 3 Gears, and an an Alan Wake.

…Gran Turismo 5; Legendary Guardian; God of War 3; MG4; Resistance 1, 2 and 3; R&C:FTOD, R&C:ACIT; Heavy Rain; War Hawk; Wipeout HD/Fury and these are just our exclusives, right?

Quality over quantity, any day, but Sony's got Quality with quantity.

Temjin001
Temjin001

I still believe to this day that nearly all of Xbox's success was founded on Halo and Live alone. As two synergistic catalysts, they attracted many other 3rd party devs to try and horizontally expand the 360 market with marginal success. Look at the 360 dashboard right now: Reach news is in dang near every advertising pane.

Needless to say, I have major respect for Bungie and Halo, and it's got to feel unbelievably gratifying for them to know that their product has carried a whole sub-culture of gamer for so many years. So much so that gamers were willing to survive the whole RRoD catastrophe, service fees, and a pre-mature system launch to take part in all of it.

I find what's pretty interesting is that despite 360's notoriety with shooters. Sony has actually put out a ton of quality exclusive shooters onto the market to compete: KZ, Resistance, Warhawk, SOCOM, even Uncharted 2 is 3/4 shooter(especially online) even Ratchet is largely shooter–I think of it as one anyway. That's a pretty heavy line-up to against MS's more popular heavy weights. Halo, Gears, LfD, and PD(not so popular anymore, another defunct MS franchise it seems)

So, really, despite MS's image, Sony has arguably an as good if not more forward thinking shooter genre than even MS. And despite that, Sony can safely invest big budgets into diverse games that aren't so risky because of a market that isn't so heavily polarized in genre interests.

bigrailer19

I agree to. IT would be hard for the xbox to have its success without that game. But it does have quite a few games id like to play still.

Temjin001
Temjin001

No doubt about that, Bigrailer; the 360 has had a number of good games over the years(many of which have eventually appeared on PS3). And for around $150 a person can buy into a 360 and get a shot at many discounted titles for real low prices (Mass Effect for $15, Gears+Gears2 for $30 isn't bad etc).

But without Halo and Live I think it'd be safe to assume that the XBox would've performed even worse than the Gamecube, and they probably wouldn't have attracted as much 3rd party support because of it.

NoSmokingBandit

I agree, and this makes me wonder what will happen next generation. Bungie isnt working on Halo any more, so expect the franchise to start sucking horribly (any studio transition causes games to suck, look at Spyro).
So without Halo pushing the 360, we are left with Live. Will people really buy another console that requires a fee to play online? People were uncertain about PSN early this generation, and rightfully so, but the gap between PSN and XBL is so narrow that $50/yr, sorry now $60/yr is just an insult from MS.

So assuming that the consoles launch in the same year, I dont have high hopes for MS next generation. Maybe they'll rush through R&D again to get a year head start, but they are really going to have to step up their first-party support. Sony has amazing first-party studios, MS only has a few worth mentioning.

Temjin001
Temjin001

I think Bungie's departure from Halo is an indicator that they've done all they can do with their baby. Going forward, pumping out more and more Halo sequels better serves MS's own marketing agenda and their iconic Halo presence than it does to satisfy the creative desires of a fine development team.

But I would argue that MS knows the tremendous value and importance of their Halo franchise and they will do everything in their power to hand pick experienced talent to form their future core Halo games. As to whether, or not, this new team will have what it takes to keep the series from feeling played out–if it hasn't already–will be interesting to see.

Bandit,
To say that a studio transition will destroy a game isn't a guarantee. Sure, history pretty much dictates that it will, but in the case of Halo, one of the lead members of Bungie has stayed at Microsoft and signed onto 343 Industries. He did this in order to try to maintain the quality of the games. Besides, you know Xbots would have purchased The Last Rebellion if it had had the Halo name slapped on it.
Peace.

My friend who only played Xbox, but now only plays his PS3 was saying this very thing the other day.

"why doesn't anyone else make excellent adventure games like God of War, uncharted 2, ratchet and clank etc. All MS offers is shooters."

He also said he won't be getting the new Halo because he won't pay LIVE and figures the campaign will be very short. He's finally seeing the bluray light.

it's all a matter of personal taste, but the variety of styls and genres on Playstation does it for me. I don't like FPS, so not fussed over Halo. Gears of War does look fun, but Uncharted appeals more

To Mell,
I had to come on and say that you have THE BEST F**KIN' AVATAR PIC!!!! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!

Oh and to stay on topic, I agree with everyone who says the Xbox would not have survived without Live or Halo. But that's a good thing and I give them that, they have changed the face of gaming in their own way just like Sony did when they came around. I don't play my Xbox as much but I do love the exclusives they have just like I'm sure Xbots would love some of our classic, beautifully crafted pieces of art.
I may own an MS machine but my heart is with Sony all the way, simply because they make quality I can't get anywhere else.
