A little while ago, Capcom put concern and fear in the hearts of all Devil May Cry fans by saying the franchise needed a new "Western touch."

Capcom boss Keiji Inafune admits the popular series has fared well in Japan, but apparently hasn't hit sales expectations in North America and Europe. Hence, as just announced at TGS 2010, a new Devil May Cry – aforementioned touch included – is coming. One of the rumors did turn out to be true, as development is being handled by the UK-based Ninja Theory ( Heavenly Sword , Enslaved: Odyssey to the West ) and Capcom called the new effort a "re-imagining" of the franchise. This time, we'll get a young Dante in what amounts to a prequel; his hair hasn't gone silver yet, and he has what appears to be a new weapon that reminds us of Ivy from Soul Calibur (only darker). Here's the official trailer:

This fresh take on Dante and Co. – currently unnamed – is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but we don't have an estimated release window just yet. But there's more. Capcom also unveiled a new IP entitled Asura's Wrath , in development at Japanese studio CyberConnect2. This one is about as nuts as it comes, with insanely fast-paced action, a clearly over-the-top premise, and a whole lot of patented Japanese action flair. It appears to be a massive brawler of some kind:

No release date for this one, either, but it's also coming to the PS3 and 360. So what think you of the announcements? It's clear that the new DMC does indeed have that "Western touch" but at least the action appears to be super cool, and it might be interesting to see the story behind how Dante became…well, older Dante.

I guess it's safe to say that this DMC is a prequel or some sort, or otherwise people really don't like the new look Cole.. argh I mean Dante.

Not impying that inFamous 2 was flushed down the toilet. I'm still super-psyched for that one.

But Capcom handing their baby over to NT is pretty much repeating the mistake of DMC2. i can't see the video from work, but i'm imagining so.

My bad, guys. I just saw the video, and it actually seems pretty rad.

And though i think i've had enough of unreal-generated games, the new Street-Fighter-esque animation in Asura's Wrath seems pretty insane (in a nutty kind of way, ya know, like everyone's fighting while high on crack).

i think both games look amazing but i still think they should have kept the "western touch" out of DMC but i'll still get it and most likely love, i mean it's still devil may cry after all.

The trailers were awesome. I personally dislike Dante's "Emo-style" but NT are co-developing it after all, still would've preferred a cooler, more bad-ass Dante instead of that kid.

But it's supposed to be a reboot, interested to see how this one turns out then.

Dunno what to think of Asura's Wrath. It's developed by CC2 so it can't turn out that bad. On the other hand it runs on UE3 and the trailer showed the 360 version, which foreshadows something nasty -_-
After all CC2's first multi-plat game is NUNS2, so given their knowledge of Sony's machine I would've expected a PS3 trailer.

Game looks frenetic and bad-ass though. Besides CC2 know how to create stunning presentations (in boss battles) ^^

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that new DMC kid. Hopefully enough people get upset like they did with Infamous 2 and cause them to reconsider.

Yeah i agree that this Dante doesn't do justice, he is not really cool looking. The moves and fighting look great though, and i'm getting the impression that this time the story will play an important role.

Really looking forward to Asura's Wrath.

I guess we wait and we see.

If this was some other game, fine. But what have they done to a long running series? Hopefully Konami doesn't start to think they need to re-invent the way MGS looks.

Asura's wrath looks awesome.
Cyber Connect 2 these are the guys doing the new naruto ultimate ninja storm 2.These guys have anime imagination like Dragonballs,Naruto etc.
Azura's Wrath will be Awesome.
Capcom please include Japanese voices.Japanese mythology needs Japanese Voices!

You know I tried those Naruto demos, and, surprisingly, they were pretty well done. Some of the super moves in the games were unbelievable. I don't really follow anime, but I will consider playing a Naruto game at the right price.

Nah they won't. The trailer already proved that they wanna cater to westerners (360 version running) so of course they can't expect those guys to read subtitles of foreign dubs, it has to be English VO then -_-

@Temjin001
That's what's the problem with Anime games. They are soo good but people don't play those games because they are anime based.NUNS2 is going to fuckin rock. Now everybody will play Asura's Wrath and get to know CyberConnect2's power!

ro kurorai

@Temjin
believe me, NUNS2 will friggin rock. I've seen the roster and it made me drool. The fighting system's simple, but there's still enough room for advanced tactics + unique character moves/tactics.

I'm not watching the Anime (coz the first episodes of Shippuuden sucked) but this game is gonna be way better than the Anime 😉

@Kiryu
yea, Aizen Sousuke kicks ass. Once I've got my hands on this wallpaper (it's by stfun) I had to make an appropriate avatar ^^

regarding Asura's Wrath: I dunno whether the Jap. version will have Jap. VO as Capcom usually hires English VAs for their games.
RE4, RE5, DMC4 were all handled that way. Even though CC2 are developing it – and they always include the original Jp VOs in international versions of their games – Capcom are still publishing it. If they say we don't wanna strain western brains with subtitles CC2 simply can't include Jap. VOs.

Unfortunately there are way too few westerners who prefer Jap. VOs (me included) in Japanese games, so the big publishers don't care about them.

btw. thanks for the link 😉

Not one to be the sour-puss, but what next, do we get a DMC that features a sword-wielding, gun-toting baby?

I think it'd be more appreciated if they created a solid trilogy or something, then move on (new character, perhaps focus on other than danta/ nero)

Initial response while watching the video:
"My name is Dante." – "No it's not go away"

Well thats Devil May Cry over with, Rebooting = Lazy. There is no reason to why there cannot be a DMC5 they had a good cast and have just flushed it all down the toilet.

Never liked DMC so it's a pass on that one. Asura's Wrath on the other hand, looks to be insane and brutal as all hell. Just awaiting a release date now.

DMC looks like fun, but the fact Dante looks so freaking stupid and nothing like he's supposed to is a complete letdown. Devil May Cry will never be a good game ever again if they keep with it. Asura's Wrath looks like some awesome crazy fun, though. Looks pretty fun and original. I'm just really disappointed in the new DMC. If I were to play it, I would play it to see if there is some explanation to why he looks like a freakin' anorexic science experiment… if it doesn't end in him becoming who he is today, then I'll have wasted my money buying it and my time playing the game. Where does his father Sparta or the Devil Trigger even fall in this? Looks like they completely took the full story of Devil May Cry, raped it, and then used what was left to create this game…

capcom is having such an identity crisis

dante just got ever more popular in his mvc3 iteration and now this bullshit shows up,

fans will be sure to leave the franchise, myself included, i haven't played heavenly sword more than 10 minutes but my guess is it was mediocre at best

good luck ninja theory u'r gonna need it

the way i see it, by next year, dante in mvc3 is gonna one of the favorites and this dmc5 garbage is gonna sink and rot at the back

Ah, forgot to talk about the video.
Well, another game that has a……Snake-wannabe voice?

First of all, this Dante is UGLY!!
Second, THE HECK DO THEY EVEN NEED TO REBOOT THE GOD DAMN SERIES WHEN THE CLIFFHANGER AT THE END OF DMC2 IS STILL HANGING!!!!

And it's been like what?
7 FRIGGIN' YEARS!!!!!

After DMC2 we got a prequel, a spin-off and now a reboot?
Where's that sequel everyone has been asking for?
Oh wait, Capcom don't care about us after all.
Going as far as to laughed off a new Onimusha.(Well I never played Onimusha but I know it's a popular franchise)

I just treat DMC2 as a none canon game, but DMC 1&3 were superb, 4 was even good, This series has not being around long enough to justify a reboot. Theres no reason why they cant just continue the story after the events of DMC4.

I burst out laughing after watching both these trailers…. I feel like this is a joke. The original Dante was one of the coolest video game characters in my gaming history and they replace it with…. a skinny kid? I mean the robot touch looked pretty cool actually but how many times are these japanese companies going to try to put that "western touch" on their games? I haven't seen it working yet.

I do have one question for all the haters, though-

If it's true that sales of DMC were flagging in NA and Europe (and Capcom has no reason to lie about that), and they wanted to boost sales, what could they have done…?

Sticking with the same formula obviously wouldn't be an answer because that wasn't working. I mean, just looking at it from a business standpoint; no personal opinion involved.

It can't just be, "I hate it so Capcom's stupid."

I personally stopped caring about the story and the characters and grew tired of the "button smashing" formula it had grown into. But games like DMC were never really my thing so I don't take my opinion as very important.

I imagine, Ben, they could move on to something else rather than fudging with something that in the end will neither please the new fanbase, nor keep the old fans happy. But handing their baby over to NT? Did Heavenly Sword do any better than DMC4? I loved the DMC series (with exception DMC2), so this is especially heart-breaking.

Geobaldi

Last I checked, Heavenly Sword sold more than DMC 4 did on any individual console. That may have changed though.

LimitedVertigo
LimitedVertigo

HS was a new IP on a just released console with a relatively low user base compared to DMC4 which was the 4th game in a series and released on three different gaming platforms. Comparing the sales of the two is ludicrous.

spiderboi

Having played all the DMC's on PS2, the DMC4 demo, and currently playing Heavenly Sword, I find DMC's battle system more suited to my play style.

But…

so far, Heavenly Sword is doing pretty well for me in terms of story-telling. They managed to at least veer away from the usual cliches. DMC on the other hand, had a pretty consistent (and predictable) story. Note though that I haven't played DMC4 yet so my opinion's not 100%.

Ben, I don't mean to be a debbie-downer. But just imagine if Square-Enix handed over a beloved franchise like Final Fantasy over to an entirely different developer (i'm not going to take any pot-shots against FFxiii ;), like to Bioware or Bethseda. Now granted, both Bioware and Bethseda are fanatastic (western rpg) developers. But either, they'd make something entirely different (which could be a good thing but it would deserve a different name), or something of lame imitation…
