New Plus Incentive Connected To PS Protection Plan

It's another incentive to be a member of PlayStation Plus, as Sony has decided to connect it to their earlier announced PlayStation Protection Plan.

You can read up on the full details over at Sony's Protection Plan website but here's the gist: if you're a Plus member, you can sign up for an extended two-year PS3 warranty for the standard price of a one-year ($45). If you aren't part of Plus, you have to pay $60, and you also can't use the PSN to sign up for that coverage. Non-Plus members still have to call the toll-free number during business hours to get the extended warranty; those special Plus subscribers need only log into the Network at any time of the day, pay their discounted fee, and that's it. Just remember, only consoles that are within the first one-year limited warranty period are eligible for the extension plans; both plans kick in after that original one-year period expires. All warranties basically cover the same things, including shipping and repair charges. There are plenty of perks to being a Plus member already; this is just another one and considering the annoyance caused by a dead system (really, is there anything quite so frustrating?), you might want to consider the PlayStation Protection Plan.

What, you don't like $15 discounts? You don't like other discounts, free games, and early access to demos and stuff? Come on. Sure you do.

Now i will consider. That is a great deal. If this isn't just a one month this I might go for it next month.

Well… I bought my PS3 at the end of 2006 at release… Don't think I'm eligible for this one.

But really… my PS3 has lasted just about 4 years, and I still take great care of it. If it fails now, it's hard to be too disappointed in comparison to others.

Remember, everyone… keeping it in a well ventilated area in normal room temperature works wonders! If your room gets super hot in the summer, put a fan or air-conditioner near your system so it doesn't recycle already hot air! Also, don't put your system on glass, metal, or any other material that conducts heat.

(Believe it or not, all of this is in your manual… but you all read that, right?) :p

hold on, can you not get an extended warranty if your ps3s normal warranty has already expried? because my manufacturers warranty has definitely expired.

fluffer nutter

No, SCEA will not give you an extended warranty on your present system if it was purchased more than a year ago but if you used a credit card, you may still have an extended warranty through them. I believe American Express will cover your purchase two years after the manufacturer's year warranty has expired.

Generally no manufacturer will grant you an extended warranty once your original warranty is already expired. You have to have continuous cover (so to speak).

Which is unfortunate because I would gladly cover each of the PS3s in my household if they were eligible.

The only way I'd bite on this one, instead of going through SquareTrade, is if they have a data recovery guarantee. What would be the benefit of going through SCEA if they can't provide this? I recently added another PS3 to my collection and got a 3 year extended warranty through ST for $26.

This is a great PLUS to the PSPLUS. I Only wish that SONY implements a CLOUD option for game saves. I have already experienced a dead system with no way of restoring the data. Id rather everyone have the option but if not at least make it available to PLUS members.

TheHighlander

Definitely, cloud based saves would be worth paying for. I'd love a service like that. As would anyone playing games with 'locked' game saves.

@kevinater321, trust me when I say that this idea has been requested repeatedly over at the U.S. PS Share blog. So many of us want this.

Would you not be able to swap the HDD out of your old system and into your new? Or does that not work?

johnld
johnld

if you move your HDD from one ps3 to another, the new ps3 will reformat the HDD. add to that the fact that copy protected files and saves wont transfer over even when using the backup utility. i know because i had to beat killzone 2 on elite. beat it once, didnt sync trophies, ps3 died, got a refurb, beat killzone to unlock elite, beat elite again(a lot easier this time), made sure to sync the damn thing.

you can remove the hdd from one ps3 and reinstall it to the same ps3 and it'll be like nothing happened. found this out when i was trying to back up 8 hours of files and it wont restore correctly. ended up removing everything but gamesaves for it to restore properly.

this is good for people who recently bought their ps3 and still covered by the warranty. all of us that got fatties are out of luck.

@johnld: When I bought a bigger HDD for my PS3 I had no problem using the backup utility to transfer all my saves. The copy protected ones transfer with everything else. It wouldn't let me copy them individually so I deleted everything but my saves and then backed them up with no problems.

johnld
johnld

@Daze
when you're upgrading the hard drive copy protected files will be transfered. i did the same thing as you, deleted everything but game saves at the end. that was because i was upgrading my ps3 hard drive for 3 days straight. i was so pissed off because i couldnt do anything for those 3 days but my ps3 was constantly on minus the times i was removing and reinstalling hard drives. i had over 200gb of data and the backup took more than 8 hours. restoring took about the same time but at the 99% point it told me that the restore didnt work properly bull$h!z so i had to do a backup over again. i kept doing this while removing files that i thought was the problem after looking online. it ended up with only gamesaves files for me to back up and it finally worked. i wanted my copy protected files to transfer so i kept trying. didnt want to redo killzone 2 for the 3 time on elite after unlocking elite mode again.

when i said copy protected files wont transfer, i meant when you go from one ps3 unit to another. my ps3 yellow lighted so i sent it to sony for "repairs" but they gave me a refurbished system instead. when i tried to restore my data, it told me not everything was restored. the copy protected files couldnt be transfered because it was a different system, im rephrasing of course.

How about this as a psn plus feature, let us deactivate ps3s remotely. i have 2 ps3s linked to my account. the one i have now and the old one i sent in. the same with psps linked with my ps3. i mean, given that i did send in my old ps3 to sony, shouldnt that be proof enough that i dont own that unit anymore. apparently telling them that the first ps3 broke and i sent it in to them isnt enough justification that they could deactivate that system from my account. i know i probably wont be using up all 5 slots but i'd still prefer it that they deactivate it. they're probably going to send it as a refurb to someone again anyway.

@johnld: I got ya now. I didn't realize you meant going from 2 different units. I hate when I have to redo games over something stupid like copy protected files.

I bought the two year warranty a few months back, it's very nice having the added peace of mine. I'm basking in the tranquility right now actually 🙂

I don't see why non-plus people can't use the online ordering thing though, that's just silly.

I've already received well over $50 worth of games/media off PSN thx to being a Plus member. I think it's insane that more friends of mine on PSN haven't caved in and bought the service thus far.

If so how have you benefited from it, i just want first hand experiences here.

I bought it day one.

I've enjoyed the free PSN games, free PS1 games, and free MINIs. Plus you get a ton of reduced pricing on popular games.

I'd say I've saved well over $50 since getting the service a few months ago.

If you play a lot of games, buy quite a few products off the PSN, and have $50 or so dollars I'd suggest signing up.

Hec yesterday Mushroom Wars was offered for free, b00ya.

I think it's worth getting. Like LV said, I've already made my money back on the free and discounted games. The warranty makes me that much more happy with the plus membership.

And I'd like to add, I've got another year to go with this subscription.

I've got it, apart from the free games, I'm had lots of nicely discounted add-ons and a few other items. So far I think it has actually paid for itself already.

I was a day one Plusser. I've been pretty happy with it so far. Unfortunately I have had all the arcade games and DLC offered so far. I have saved some money with the discounts on other items and 2 of the 4 minis, haven't played the 5th newest one yet, were cool.

I am a little disappointed in the PSone games though. Syphon was cool but already own that and the other 2 are just utter crap. I know the program will get better over time but if they want to bring in some more people they need to offer up some really good stuff for free.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

@Daze,

Got to agree there. I was hoping that the initial things available through Plus would be a bit better, something really high profile to grab people's attention. It's been a bit of a let down from that point of view. But on the other hand, I've basically already saved my subscription fee, so it's probably worth it already.

DazeOfWar

@Highlander: Ya I kinda look at these first 3 months as the free ones I got for signing up. So still not really losing out.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

I still wish that they had a warranty program for older PS3s. I'd actually be willing to pay $150 if they'd take my working PS3 phat and give it a thorough overhaul and send it back to me with an extendable 1yr warranty. All they'd need to do is take the thing apart, replace the HSF and thermal compound, and put a new laser head in the BluRay. That would give my beloved BC PS3s a new lease of life.

so basically this thing is useless to those who have ps3 fatties. plus just keeps loosing its appeal. wheres the demo and beta access? guess i still have 13 or 14 months left for this.

I bought this warranty as soon as I heard about it. My regular warranty expires the 28th of August. This was right on time for me. PS plus has been well worth the money.

It does seem like it was pretty much timed to catch almost all the PS3 slim owners. Not a bad idea at all.

So far, PS+ is a huge waste of $$$ in my eyes.
All they are offering atm, are junky arcade style games, ps1 games nobody wanted in the first place, and avatars…. wow. This extended warranty is a nice thing though, if u wanted it to begin with, but for PS+ to be worth it in my eyes, I'd like to see some things from it first, like more and BETTER ps1 games ( some FF titles, Res Evil, etc ), and maybe a free movie rental every month or so.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

I'm still surprised that they didn't offer a PS1 classic like FFVII, FFVIII or Metal Gear Solid as a freebie for those signing up within the first month. That would have got *lots* of subscriber's attention.

I just paid £40 extended 2 year warranty in Game so I am out of this. Guess I'll wait still for plus, im not that bothered about getting demo's early etc.
