Heavy Rain is one of those games that can have a tremendous impact on a player. Just ask Ubisoft associate producer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood , Jean-Francois Boivin.

In speaking to VideoGamer , Boivin believes that at some point in the future, games and movies will actually merge into one entertainment medium. He talks about a film/game of either Assassin's Creed or Spider-Man ; you'd just pop it into your machine and have the option of watching or playing right from the start. "And it's the same quality; the same thing," he said. You could watch a scene and be like, "Oh, I love this scene – I'm going to play this scene." And to think this won't ever happen is like us thinking gaming couldn't ever get any better than Super Mario Bros. after the Atari, Colecovision and Intellivision. Furthermore, because Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain is already pretty darn close to an interactive movie, Boivin mentions the game…and tosses in some very high praise:

"I can see that happening, and we're starting to have a glimpse of the possibility with games like Heavy Rain – which, I have to say, changed my life. It changed my entire look outlook on interactive entertainment. This is a glimpse of how we're going to bring the video game industry to the next level of commercialism. I can see my mum playing a game like Heavy Rain – [something] much more accessible, obviously, but just the murder mystery and choosing where you want to go and having 22 different endings and just wanting to re-play that story over and over again… I can see that happening."

There are so many reasons to experience Heavy Rain , and one of those reasons is the immense amount of respect given to the game, not from gamers only, but also from other designers and developers. And as for the idea of games and movies merging…well, sure. Maybe that'll save Hollywood. 'cough'

Wow! That's really high praise from Ubisoft's man. I loved this quote;
"we're starting to have a glimpse of the possibility with games like Heavy Rain – which, I have to say, changed my life. It changed my entire look outlook on interactive entertainment. This is a glimpse of how we're going to bring the video game industry to the next level"

That is huge kudos for the guys at Quantic Dreams. This is a games industry insider saying that their game changed the industry. Awesome.

I also love the concept that he mentions of having a game/movie that you can watch or play, or dip into to play a particular scene and watch the rest. For example, in Heavy Rain, there are some scenes where the player needs to react quickly (such as in a fight) with specific button presses. For more casual gamers, it would be nice to just have the scene play out for them. The game still plays out to the endings dependent on the choices the player makes, but the player doesn't always have to be in control, they can be a viewer sometimes instead of always being the player. This would be very seductive to a lot of less hardcore gamers who haven't dipped their toe into Heavy Rain.

This Jean-Francois Boivin really seems to 'get' it.

Quantic Dream has had the correct idea of gaming for some time now. The great thing about them is how they try something new with every game they create with each generation that comes around.
Seriously, if this praise isn't enough to convince anyone out there that doubts Heavy Rain, I don't know what will.
Jean-Francois is absolutely right, this games changes everything once a player touches it or even someone who watches someone else playing it.
I hope Quantic Dream's next game gets the same amount of praises Heavy Rain has received.
IMO, no other dev team out there deserves more praises for braking the mould (Kojima Productions comes damn close. MGS4 was just insane!).

The fact that Jean-Francois Boivin 'gets' it, makes me much more sympathetic to the idea of buying Brotherhood.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing about Brotherhood. I mean I have all the AC games but thought I'd pass on Brotherhood.

Qubex, if it's a ploy then I'm a sucka for devs who praise Quantic Dreams work LOL!

I would LOVE to see Heavy Rain actually changing the game industry, then MAYBE we could stop seeing the next Call of Duty: Black Warfare III, but that's just wishful thinking…

I want games and movies to stay separate and movies to get better.

Heavy Rain is one of the few games this generation to take a real risk, and it's inspiring other people in the industry because of it. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Grat!
Now QD just needs to "WoW' them(and us too) some more, by making the DLC for the other 3 parts of the story so they have a whole completed saga.

I say, get cracking on it right after Horizon's done.
