We think we speak for all gamers when we ask Jason West and Vince Zampella: "so, whatcha workin' on over there at Respawn?"
They've got all sorts of talent over there at the new studio – including quite a few ex-Infinity Ward employees – so the expectations are high. We're not going to go over all the Activision/IW details again because it's not only old news, it's also depressing. So let's focus on the good: Respawn Entertainment's new game. We still don't know what it is, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has given his two cents worth, as he often does, predicting that the project will challenge Halo -creator Bungie, which recently signed a 10-year exclusivity deal with Activision for their own mystery title. Said Pachter on the most recent episode of Pach-Attack :
"The one genre that hasn't been cloned a lot is the space shooter, so I'll make a prediction here. Respawn Entertainment, the ex-Infinity Ward guys–that's their next game. They're gonna make a Halo-killer. They're gonna make a game that is going to compete in the space shooter genre."
Well, it wouldn't be any real surprise to learn they're working on a shooter, considering that was IW's forte. But we still don't know anything concrete so the question is, does Pachter once again know something we don't…? You may remember when he accidentally outed Eat Sleep Play's Twisted Metal some time before the surprise E3 announcement this year. …well, we knew it was an "out" when we heard it but…we had some secret info, too. Anyway, what does Pachter know? Seriously? And are you interested in a " Halo killer?"
i hope there not making a "halo killer" games that try to kill another series tend to be crap
"hasn't been cloned a lot"
Are you kidding me Pach?
I hope he was trying to be funny.
my first thought as well, maybe he needs to go to game store and check his facts.
Martian shooters no common? Oooookay. I'd prefer to see something more imaginative from these guys but Pachattack could be wrong.
Halo has already been killed. :p
Beat me to it 😉
I would indeed be interested in a "halo-killer" as long as it isn't merely a brushed up knock off of Halo. Something very original with an intense story would be cool.
Doesn't vanquish fall under this category? And if not, well it certainly seems like decent candidate for a "Halo-Killer"
Judging from the videos, Vanquish seems to be a Third Person shooter, not First Person. They're two different sub-genres, so they wouldn't compete.
Good call, but a 3rd person shooter would be better aimed at the the PS3 audience and I think it could still qualify as "our" version of a Halo Killer.. or at least my version.
While I love scifi, I have to say that the genera seems to cater to low budget productions due to the belief that in the future there will be no paper, no loose items, just clean cut white or grey environments with computer screens on the walls. In fact the only three games that I think have done the scifi environment justice are killzone, dead space, and mass effect

I agree ^.^
Hey guys, I've just returned from my trek to the wilderness and I missed a lot of news. So has the dust cleared on the lawsuit between respawn and activision?
It's still a mess.
They always say "Halo-killer" as if Halo was the greatest shooter ever made, and that the ultimate objective of FPS developers is to "kill" it by making an even better FPS.

Isn't halo doing good enough a job of killing itself? I remember the media trying to peg killzone as a halo killer. It ended up being a completely different franchise, and a finer more immersive product.
"Halo killer"? well that an't hard.
The only reason Halo is doing so well is that it is all microsoft has.
"The one genre that hasn't been cloned a lot is the space shooter…"
Uhhh…What?
I hope pachter doesn't know something about what respawn is working on, I kinda had hopes for something original from them. If this is all they got going, that's just too bad.
i doubt it, these guys have spent most of their career creating war games so i doubt they will do anything different.
id like to see them do a mystery detective horror styled game, like deadly premonition or heavy rain but actually scary like.
actually condemned 2 is the perfect example, that was a really good game, one of this gens most underrated games!!!!!
thats one genre thats really lacking, a murder mystery styled game.
Did you really just bring up Deadly Premonition and Heavy Rain in the same sentence???
You should probably clarify that one is the worst game in the genre and one is the best.
so? what does quality have to do with it?
i was merely giving a example of a story i would like to see in more games.
Good, we need more sci-fi FPS.
It's about time we ditch modern day "bullet" for laser or plasma COMPLETELY for once.
Halo killer, huh?
I seriously doubt they can silence the Halo followers. They could write "Halo" on a used diner napkin and it would still sell like hot-cakes to the fanboys.
My point is, no matter how much better it might be, it's never going to become more famous. Master Chief is to Microsoft as Mario is to Nintendo. You could make a side scroller where the super hero is an electrician named Super Phyllo, and it could be a million times better than Super Mario, but it'll never work.
Halo-killer? Why bother, from what I've seen, Halo might be put out of it's misery before they launch anything. Without Bungie, it's just not the same game. Not to mention that Halo 3 was barely an incremental upgrade from Halo2, and Halo ODLC wasn't an upgrade at all.
Respawn Entertainment presents
"Call of Responsibility: Current Warfare"
There's all that angst against Activision, you know?
Oh wonderful, now they will have a reason for not having any weight to their guns!
I wanna see the "Battle Toads" of FPSs.
Serious but outragously comical.
I wanna put the hurt on that girl in your avatar.
i almost fell over reading that.

Being a halo killer isn't exactly an amazing accomplishment.
