Think all games that utilize the Unreal Engine look the same? Well, if so, don't tell Epic Games vice president Mark Rein.

As he revealed to Spong , the idea that any project using the Unreal Engine will look like Gears of War is erroneous. This came about when it was mentioned that People Can Fly's Bulletstorm seems a lot different in terms of style (when compared to Epic's Gears series) and that set Rein off:

"I hear that all the time – 'oh, those Unreal Engine games all look the same.' It's the most ridiculous argument ever. Did you see that Dungeon Defenders game? Really, does that look like Gears of War to you? Does Leisure Suit Larry look like Gears? Does Shadow Complex?

People make so many different-looking games with out technology. You know, Borderlands was cel-shaded… it's just such a silly thing. If two games have the same look it's intentional, because two designers have the same feel for what they want their visuals to be like and Bulletstorm, it's just different."

It makes sense. With the sheer number of games out there that have used the UE3 engine in the past, it would indeed be absurd to assume they all looked the same. And besides, it always falls to the developer to do something special with any engine; provided the developers have the requisite talent, we should end up with a darn good looking game. Just don't go making sweeping generalizations…it can irritate industry professionals.

Unreal grabs a lot of hate, for what i never really understood. When a game is released that uses the unreal engine and it sucks and isn't optimized well, i blame the devs, not the engine.

Bulletstorm may not look UC2 great, but it looks great graphically so far imo

But there really isn't that many games made with unreal that are optimized well. A great majority of unreal games have screen tearing, texture loading, pop in and frame rate problems. Even Xbox exclusives like gears and mass effect suffer from these problems. The only game I've seen or played that had less of these issues was Bioshock 1 and 2.

I do agree thogh Bulletstorm looks like a much better use of the engine then we have seen in the past.

it grabs allot of hate because.
1 its ancient history.
2 its so easy to use, developers just grab it chuck it in and do no work what so ever, thats why we end up with games like rouge warrior and AvP.

@ Anonymous Cowherd: so do you blame the engine itself, or the dev for putting out crap? I say it solely lies with the devs making sub par video games, not epic's engine.

________, you annoy the crap out of me because you have NO IDEA what you're talking about. The 2 games that you listed are BOTH developed by Rebellion that uses its OWN Asura Engine…..NOT the U3 Engine.

BAMF! (That's me punching you in the face….)

I'm better now. But seriously, please stop talking.

wow sev you really need a brain transplant, than go to anger management.
where did i say AvP or rouge warrior run on the UE3 engine?

honestly i can not believe how bad the comprehension skills of people on this site!
i never have to explain myself on any other sites.
"2 its so easy to use, developers just grab it chuck it in and do no work what so ever, thats why we end up with games like rouge warrior and AvP."
that sounds pretty self explanatory to me!
but if i have to dumb it down for ya here it goes.
what i meant was UE3 is a easy engine to pick up and throw in, you dont need to optimize your code as much as other games it comes with allot of tools which automate things.
there, that simple enough for ya?

Underdog15

You never have to explain yourself on other sites for a reason…

and it isn't for the reason you think it is.

EDIT: MAYBE… just maybe… and I know this is something that belongs in an academic realm, so this might not be the place… but typically, if you want to make a point about how UE3 is an (an easy, not a easy… easy starts with an 'e'… GAWD) easy engine to use that dev's just chuck it in and do no work whatsoever, then MAYBE you should use examples that actually relate to your point about UE3, and not an entirely different dev altogether.

Maybe if you kept your train of thought on the same track and used applicable examples related to the topic you're discussing, people wouldn't think you're daft.

Lastly, someone in another thread the other day pointed out that you constantly misuse 'than' and 'then'. You're still doing it.

I admit, it's an observation I've made, though, probably on a very narrow, but prominent selection: UT3, Gears 1 and 2, Mass Effect 2, Batman:AA all resembled each other not only in visuals, style and camera, but they "handled" similarly too. I still had fun with them, though.

They do all look the same. Like plastic with a layer of vasoline caked on them.

The only games I've seen use Unreal in an original way is Borderlands. Everythng else looks pretty bland and colorless. I guess Mass Effect was a nice use of it but even that couldn't ecscape all the glitchiness that plagues unreal games.

Sorry Epic. Your engine just isn't that cool.

Unreal really needs a major shader update. Everything does look super plastic-like.

Though i know very little about 3d modeling, i assume it cant be very difficult to make a decent looking shader, seeing as every other engine has people who looks like people, not action figures.

If I remember correctly borderlands originally was going to look like all those other games, but they couldn't get the framerate right so they toned the visuals down and cellshaded to make it look acceptable and thus got decent framerates.

They all do look the same. Its so easy to tell if the game is using unreal, plain and simple. Artistically they're different but not technically.

Temjin001

I think when UE games have similar art direction the likenesses between them become pretty evident.
Something like Leisure Suit Larry and Gears have totally different artistic approaches where they'd be drawing from different graphic resources from the engine.
But when you start comparing games within a similar stylization: Gears, Bulletstorm, UT3, Transformer's WFC, Batman you begin to see similarities in texturing, lighting, etc.
Heck, that Transformer's WTC demo level nearly looked ripped straight from UT3.
They also tend to run in the sub-30fps neighborhood.

Generally, I prefer games that have custom built engines over middleware.
Or if it is middleware, I preference those games that are designed by the engine's creators (Epic, Crytek etc) I really look forward to how Crytek handles Crysis 2 with their new Cry-Engine.

Unreal at least looked awesome with Batman because the action figure style models fit the game perfectly.

I've never had a problem with the Unreal Engine. One of the best games of all time, Deus Ex, uses the Unreal Engine. Basically I don't care how any engine appears graphically between games. I only care about the playability of the engines. And the Unreal Engines have always been one of the funnest to use. Can't wait for Unreal Engine 4 in 2012.

kraygen
kraygen

Well sadly they all look similar, but many games not using unreal can also have similar art styles.

My big problem with the unreal engine isn't the graphics, it's how the games handle. I just mentioned this in another post a day or 2 ago as I just finished playing arkham asylum. Every unreal engine game feels the same as far as the characters are concerned.

You always feel like some stiff, bulky, mannequin who stomps around getting stuck on anything that sticks out into your path even the tiniest bit. The worlds almost always feel like you're playing in a diorama and it's easy to see the edge of the world.

It feels very constricting and underwhelming. In short the unreal engine may be easy, but easy isn't always the best.

hes got a point.
but he has no one but himself to blame!
when they made the UE3 they made it so basic, so simplistic so developers really dont have to do anything with it.
you can make your games look cool and different like borderlands or bulletstorm.
BUT that means you have to put work into it, and that puts most developers off.
that is why we get games like AvP or rouge warrior!

that is what i hate about this gen.
back in the day games were only made by gamers, they were made for a passion and love for games, not as a cash cow!
now days developers make games not because they love games, but because they see it as a easy way to make allot of cash.
cough antivision, cough M$, cough ubisoft.

sorry but you're fooling yourself if you think that companies back in the day did all for the love of gaming. You put something out there for sale, you hope it sells well.

I'm sure every company out there would love for their games to sell as much as possible. Sure, some companies that make games are passionate about what they do, but im sure they are hoping for great sales

___________

of course they hope it sells well, but back in the day developers gave a sh*t about games.
back in the day games were expensive to make, and the tech was no where near as advanced as it is now.
15 years ago games were so much harder to make, so that scared away allot of people which left the best of the best to shine through.
thats why we did not have games like rouge warrior 15 years ago, people who made games gave a sh*t about games.
now days, most people who make games actually give a sh*t weather there games good or crap.
perfect example rebellion, they made 2 of this gens worst games AvP and rouge warrior.
or A2M same with them, or pandemic.
pandemic use to be a decent developer, they made some decent ps2 games till the ps3 and 360 came out than they released nothing but tripe!
mercenaries 2 and the saboteur are by far 2 of the buggies games i have ever played!

Back in the day? Do you have any idea how many lame-o knock off games came out for the original NES and SNES? Even Atari had lame-o knock offs. And if you go back any further in time than that, then… well… I dunno… just don't. No good point can be made further back.

I am not a fan of the engine per se. And that's only because I don't like the way it looks as compared to Uncharted's and Killzone's engine.

They look realistic in my book. Unreal games have a comic book style to them. Not saying it's bad, but I personally do not like it much.

To be honest most really do look the same that's not to say there are no differences, but the majority do seem to similar IMO. That being said I do believe the blame falls on the Developers and on the the UE3. The Devs because IMO the seem really lazy & to the UE3 because they made it to easy to build a game to the point the devs got really lazy. Just my humble opinion.

Oh yeah, the ue4 is comming out with the next generation of sys. Tht reallys sucks. I say every devs should just use their own engine. It seems tht only lazy Devs use the ue3. I really hate that.

I have always felt when the UE3 engine was being used for the more realistic games, characters tend to look like plastic and the face (skin) textures look odd.

I think Mark believes we are referring to the steroid pumping jocks they use for their characters, which I fully understand is a design decision from the developer not a limitation of the Unreal Engine.
